Connect a compatible display and keyboard and mouse (or trackpad), then press the Mac mini’s power button on the bottom and follow Setup Assistant. The exact display cable and supported display settings depend on your Mac mini model and the ports on your monitor.
1. Check your Mac mini and monitor ports
Before choosing a cable, identify your Mac mini model and look at the available video inputs on your monitor. Port layouts and display capabilities vary by Mac mini generation; Apple’s display connection guide provides model-specific details.
Current Mac mini guidance lists HDMI and rear Thunderbolt/USB-C ports as display outputs. On the current model, the two USB-C ports on the front do not support video. Check Apple’s Mac mini port guide for the exact model before connecting.
2. Connect and turn on the monitor
- If your monitor requires separate power, connect it to power and turn it on.
- Connect the monitor’s video cable to a compatible video-output port on the back of the Mac mini.
- If the connectors do not match, check the monitor’s manual and use a compatible adapter with the cable or a replacement cable. Confirm the port and cable support the display connection you need; a USB-C-shaped connector alone does not guarantee every feature.
Do not choose a cable based only on the Mac mini’s generation or the shape of a port. The correct connection depends on the actual ports on both devices and their documented compatibility.

3. Connect the keyboard and mouse
You can use wired or Bluetooth accessories. For wired accessories, connect them to compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt ports; use an adapter if the accessory’s connector requires one. Apple’s accessory guide covers connecting peripherals.
For Bluetooth accessories, make sure they are ready to pair. If you are using a Magic Keyboard or Magic Mouse, Apple says you can connect it with its provided cable to pair, then disconnect the cable for Bluetooth use. You can also select a Bluetooth accessory in System Settings > Bluetooth.

4. Start the Mac mini and complete Setup Assistant
- Press the power button on the bottom of the Mac mini.
- Follow the on-screen Setup Assistant prompts. Setup Assistant guides you through the settings needed to begin using the Mac mini and may offer data transfer or the option to set it up as a new Mac.
Apple’s Mac mini setup guide explains the first-run setup. Its Getting Started Guide summarizes the sequence: connect a display and input devices, press the power button on the bottom, and follow Setup Assistant.

After connecting the display, open System Settings > Displays to adjust options such as resolution or whether to mirror or extend the desktop. Available resolutions and refresh rates depend on the specific Mac mini model and display, so check Apple’s model-specific display guide rather than applying specifications from another generation.
