Set up your home office around your body and the work you do: support your feet and back first, then position the screen and input devices, manage light and glare, and adjust the room for comfort. There is no single workstation arrangement that fits everyone, so treat measurements as starting points and adjust until you can work comfortably without awkward reaching or straining to see.
1. Choose a space that lets you work without reaching
Place the desk so you can put the monitor directly in front of you and keep the keyboard and mouse close. Leave enough room beneath the desk for your legs, and move stored equipment if it restricts where you can sit. A clear, usable work area makes it easier to keep frequently used items within easy reach.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) puts the principle plainly: “There is no single ‘correct’ posture or arrangement of components that will fit everyone.” Its Computer Workstations eTool offers guidance for adjusting a workstation—not a one-size-fits-all prescription.

2. Adjust your chair and desk together
Start with a chair that supports your back, legs, buttocks, and arms. Adjust the chair and work surface together so you can sit with your back supported, feet supported, and wrists in a neutral position rather than bent up, down, or sideways. Aim for thighs approximately parallel to the floor, or hips slightly higher than your knees.

- Flexible Armrests: Move smoothly rounded PU-padded armrests forward or back and swivel them left or right to find the optimal arm position. Flip the armrests up when you want more freedom or to easily slide the ergonomic chair under the desk.
If raising the chair is necessary to bring your arms and hands to a comfortable working height, but your feet no longer reach the floor, a footrest may help. If you are choosing a chair, prioritize fit and adjustability; OSHA recommends trying different chairs for comfort before buying. No particular chair style or fixed seated pose suits everyone. Varying posture during the day is preferable to treating one position as the only correct one. See OSHA’s guidance on chairs and posture and workstation adjustments.
3. Position the monitor, keyboard, and mouse
Set the screen at a comfortable distance and height
Center the monitor directly in front of you, at least 20 inches away. OSHA gives 20 to 40 inches as a general preferred viewing-distance range; use it as a starting point, not a target you must force. Adjust the distance and text size so you can read while sitting upright with your back supported. The top line of the screen should be at or below eye level. OSHA says the center of the screen is normally 15 to 20 degrees below horizontal eye level, but that is guidance rather than a rigid requirement for every setup.

- High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
- Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
- Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
- Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
- Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching
If you find yourself leaning forward, craning your neck, or squinting, change the screen distance, height, or text size rather than holding an uncomfortable posture. OSHA’s monitor guidance explains these positioning considerations.

Keep input devices close
Place the keyboard and mouse near each other and within easy reach. This helps keep your elbows near your body and your wrists neutral instead of making you stretch or bend them to work. OSHA’s additional workstation guidance emphasizes comfortable reach and supported positioning.

Make laptop-heavy work a deliberate setup
A laptop’s built-in screen and keyboard are connected, which can make it difficult to position both comfortably for intensive work. OSHA recommends an auxiliary full-sized keyboard and monitor for primary laptop use; its evaluation checklist also calls for a separate keyboard and input device. A separate display lets you position the screen while keeping the keyboard and mouse at a comfortable height. A laptop stand can help raise the screen, but OSHA’s retrieved recommendation is for auxiliary monitors and keyboards, not a stand specifically.
4. Reduce glare and light the work you are doing
Arrange the screen so windows and light sources are not reflected in it. Where possible, place the monitor at right angles to windows and other light sources. Blinds or drapes can control incoming daylight; indirect or shielded lighting can reduce reflections from room lights.

For reading or paperwork, use a task light aimed at the work rather than at the monitor. If you are choosing a lamp, OSHA’s purchasing checklist identifies adjustable position and intensity, a hood, and a diffuser as useful features. Lighting needs depend on the task and display; there is no single brightness setting established here as a universal home-office target. OSHA’s environment guidance covers reflections, lighting, and display-related considerations.

5. Make the room comfortable
Check that the space has adequate air circulation and that vents do not blow drafts directly on you. OSHA recommends relative humidity of 30% to 60%. For office environments, it gives ambient indoor temperature ranges of 68–74°F (20–23.5°C) during the heating season and 73–78°F (23–26°C) during the cooling season. These are OSHA recommendations for office environments, not universal medical requirements; personal comfort and local conditions vary. See OSHA’s workstation environment guidance.

6. Recheck the setup as you work
Use OSHA’s evaluation checklist to review whether your head and neck feel balanced, your back and feet are supported, the screen is free of reflected glare, and the display settings are comfortable. Check that laptop users have suitable separate peripherals and that the workday allows task variation or micro-breaks.
- Adjust the workstation if you notice repeated reaching, leaning, or awkward wrist positions.
- Change the screen distance, height, or text size if you cannot read comfortably while sitting upright.
- Reposition the screen or light source if reflections distract you.
- Vary tasks or take brief pauses when your work allows.
The checklist is a prompt to assess and improve your workstation, not proof that discomfort or symptoms will be prevented. OSHA’s guidance focuses on workstation fit and comfort; it does not establish that a particular product or desk arrangement improves focus or productivity. In practical terms, reducing avoidable glare, awkward reaching, and other distractions can make the space easier to work in.
