To keep your Google TV watchlist, set up the replacement with the same Google Account and the same Google TV profile you used before. Your watchlist is associated with that account and updates across devices signed in to it. Apps are different: Google’s setup can reinstall apps you select, and the Apps page can show an “Apps from my other devices” row, but Google does not promise an automatic clone of every installation, login, or app-specific setting.

The safest migration is therefore two separate jobs: restore the Google account and profile for watchlist continuity, then reinstall apps and sign in to each streaming service again. Keep the old device available until you have checked both.

What moves to the replacement—and what does not

A Google TV Streamer replacement does not restore one single package of data. Google account data, installed applications, third-party service accounts, and device-specific settings are handled separately.

Item What to expect Action required
Google TV watchlist Watchlist titles update across Google TV devices signed in to the same Google Account. Use the same account and select the correct profile during setup.
Apps You can select apps during Google Home onboarding. After setup, Google TV may list available apps in “Apps from my other devices.” Choose the apps you want, then search for and install anything missing.
Streaming-service sign-ins Google’s setup instructions do not promise that third-party credentials are copied. Open each app and authenticate with that service’s account when asked.
App-specific data and settings Automatic restoration is not established for every app. Progress, profiles, downloads, and preferences can depend on the individual service. Check each service after signing in; use its own recovery or sync process if offered.
Google TV service selections Linked services and recommendation settings are managed separately from app installation. Review service selections under the Google TV profile settings.
Kids’ profiles Google’s app guidance says apps work across TV profiles except kids’ profiles. Check a kids’ profile separately rather than assuming the main profile’s app list applies.

This distinction prevents the most common mistake: treating a restored Google Account as if it were a backup of every streaming app and its internal data.

  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Prepare before connecting the replacement

Gather the hardware and account details before you start. Google’s setup requirements cover the Streamer, Voice Remote, a display with an available HDMI input, and network access.

  • Google TV Streamer and Voice Remote: Have both devices available, including the remote’s batteries.
  • Display and HDMI input: Confirm that the television or monitor has a free HDMI port.
  • HDMI cable: Google lists an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 certified cable as sold separately. Check whether you already have a suitable cable before buying one; it is not an automatic extra purchase for every setup.
  • Network: Prepare secure Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection. Network availability and supported features can vary by device and location.
  • Google Account: Identify the account that owns the watchlist. Google recommends a Gmail account for the best setup experience.
  • Phone, if using Google Home: Install or update the Google Home app and sign in to the account you intend to use.

Factory-reset a previously used replacement

If the replacement Streamer has been used before, reset it before beginning its new setup. Starting from a clean state avoids carrying over the previous home, account, or configuration and follows Google’s device-specific setup guidance.

Keep the old device available during the check

If you want to compare the old and new devices, do not remove the old Streamer from Google Home or your account until the migration is complete. Google warns that removing a streaming device unlinks it from the Google Account and other home members’ accounts and deletes data associated with that device. The exact effect depends on the removal action, so postpone it until you have verified the replacement.

Choose a setup route

Google documents two ways to onboard the Streamer. Both can lead to the same account and watchlist result; the difference is where you perform the steps.

Route Best when What you do
Google Home app You want phone-guided instructions, QR-code setup, and an opportunity to select apps from your mobile device. Add the Streamer to a home, scan its QR code or enter the setup code, choose a room, and complete sign-in in the app and on screen.
TV and Voice Remote You prefer to work directly on the television or cannot use the phone-based flow. Connect the device, switch the display to its HDMI input, and follow the on-screen prompts with the remote.

Neither route is documented as a full image restore. You still need to check the Apps page and authenticate services after onboarding.

Set up with the Google Home app

  1. Connect the hardware. Plug the Streamer into an HDMI input on the display and connect power. Turn on the display and select the HDMI input used by the Streamer.
  2. Open Google Home. On your phone, open Google Home, choose an existing home or add the home where the replacement belongs, and make sure the app is using the intended Google Account.
  3. Find the Streamer. Let Google Home locate the device, then select the Streamer when it appears.
  4. Scan or enter the code. Scan the QR code shown for setup, or enter the setup code if scanning is unavailable.
  5. Accept the terms and choose a room. Confirm Google’s terms, assign the device to its room, and continue through the in-app prompts.
  6. Sign in with the watchlist account. When Google asks for an account, use the same Google Account that held the old watchlist. If the account has multiple Google TV profiles, select the profile associated with those titles.
  7. Select applications when offered. The mobile setup flow can present apps to install. Select the services you use, then allow the process to continue. Google’s setup guide specifically instructs users to “Wait for the TV to install the apps you selected on your mobile device.”
  8. Finish the on-screen steps. Complete the remaining network, remote, and display prompts in Google Home and on the television.

If an app was not offered during onboarding, that does not mean it is unavailable. Use the Apps page after setup to search for it.

Set up directly on the TV with the Voice Remote

  1. Connect the Streamer and select its HDMI input. Plug in the HDMI and power connections, turn on the display, and switch to the corresponding input.
  2. Pair or use the Voice Remote. Follow the pairing prompt shown on the television.
  3. Follow the on-screen setup. Choose language, network, home, and account options as they appear.
  4. Use the correct Google Account and profile. Sign in with the account that owns the watchlist, then choose the intended Google TV profile if more than one is available.
  5. Allow app installation to finish. If you selected apps on a mobile device as part of the flow, leave the Streamer connected while the television installs them.

The remote-based route is useful when you want to complete everything at the display, but it does not change the account, app, or third-party-login rules.

Restore missing apps after onboarding

Check the app list first

Open the Google TV Apps area and look for the “Apps from my other devices” row. Google provides this row to help find apps associated with other devices, but it is a discovery aid rather than a guarantee that every old installation will reappear.

Search and install individually

  1. Open the Apps page on the replacement.
  2. Search for the missing service by name.
  3. Select the correct app listing and choose the install option.
  4. Wait for installation to complete, then open the app.
  5. Repeat for each service that is absent.

Availability can vary by region, device, network, subscription, and service terms. An app that was present on the old device may not be offered in the same form on the replacement if the service or location has changed.

Sign in inside every service

After installation, open each streaming app and sign in with that service’s account. Google’s setup process does not establish that third-party usernames, passwords, one-time codes, viewing profiles, downloads, or app-specific preferences transfer automatically. Keep the old device nearby until you have confirmed access to the services you actually use.

Restore Google TV service settings without cancelling subscriptions

App installation and Google TV’s service selections are separate. In the Google TV profile settings, review the services linked to the profile and enable the services whose catalogs you want included in recommendations. Correct service selections can improve the relevance of the home screen, but they do not replace signing in to the corresponding apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Removing or unlinking a service from Google TV does not cancel a paid subscription. Cancellation must be completed with the service provider under the account that bills you. Likewise, adding a service in Google TV does not by itself prove that the service app is installed or that its account is authenticated.

Verify the watchlist on the new device

  1. Check the account indicator. Open the profile menu and confirm that the displayed Google Account is the one used on the old Streamer.
  2. Check the profile. If the household has several profiles, switch to the profile that originally saved the titles. A correct account with the wrong profile can make the watchlist appear empty.
  3. Open Watchlist. Find Watchlist from the profile or Google TV interface and compare several known titles with the old device.
  4. Allow for service limits. Google notes that some content from some services cannot be added to the watchlist. A missing title may therefore reflect a content limitation rather than a failed migration.

Google’s watchlist guidance states that watchlist items update across devices logged in to the same account. That synchronization is account-level; it should not be interpreted as a promise that a service’s separate viewing history or profile data is restored.

Profiles, activity, and account limitations

Google describes media and activity syncing for profiles signed in to Google services, while interactions can depend on linked accounts. Use the intended profile throughout setup and then verify the individual services rather than assuming every activity record will be present.

Google recommends Gmail for the best Streamer experience. Its setup guidance cautions that some services, app installation, YouTube, or parental controls may be unavailable or behave unexpectedly when a non-administrator Google Workspace account is used. If the replacement behaves differently with a work or school account, an eligible personal account may be required for the affected features.

Migration pitfalls and fixes

The watchlist is empty

  • Open the profile menu and verify the Google Account, not just the device name.
  • Switch to the profile that saved the titles originally.
  • Check whether the missing title comes from a service or content category that Google says cannot be added to Watchlist.
  • Do not delete the old device while diagnosing the account or profile mismatch.

An expected app is missing

  • Check “Apps from my other devices” on the Apps page.
  • Search for the app manually and install it.
  • Confirm that the device, region, network, subscription, and service terms permit the app.
  • Open the installed app and complete its own sign-in process.

The app opens but shows no account or progress

This is normally a service-account issue rather than a Google TV watchlist issue. Sign in with the same credentials used on the old device and follow the service’s account-recovery or profile-selection screens. Google’s cited setup material does not promise transfer of third-party login state, viewing progress, downloads, or app preferences.

Recommendations look wrong

Review the Google TV profile’s linked-service selections and make sure you are using the intended profile. Service selections influence Google TV recommendations, while the service app still needs its own authentication.

The old device disappeared too soon

Removing a streaming device through Google Home can unlink it from the account and delete data associated with it. If you removed it before checking the replacement, finish setup with the correct account and profile, then reinstall and authenticate apps manually. The consequences of removal vary by the action taken, so avoid repeating it until the new device is verified.

When to retire or hand over the old Streamer

Keep the old unit connected until you have checked the watchlist, installed the services you need, and signed in to each important app. Only then should you remove its account or home association if you no longer want it linked. Because Google warns that removal unlinks accounts and deletes device-associated data, treat that step as final rather than as a routine part of initial setup.

If the replacement itself was previously owned or configured by someone else, ensure it has been factory-reset before your setup. A clean reset and a deliberate sign-in with your account reduce the chance of mixing the previous owner’s home, profile, or app configuration with yours.

Final verification checklist

  • The replacement is connected to the intended HDMI input and a working Wi-Fi or Ethernet network.
  • The device uses the same Google Account that owns the watchlist.
  • The correct Google TV profile is selected.
  • Known watchlist titles appear on the replacement.
  • “Apps from my other devices” has been checked.
  • Missing apps have been searched for and installed manually.
  • Each important streaming app has been opened and authenticated separately.
  • Google TV service selections have been reviewed without confusing them with subscription cancellation.
  • The old device remains available until these checks pass.

Following this order preserves the part Google actually syncs—the account-based watchlist—while treating app installation, service access, and app-specific data as separate checks that require confirmation.
