Turn on the Pixel 10, connect it to Wi-Fi, and follow the setup prompts for your SIM or eSIM, Google Account, security, and data transfer. You can copy data directly from an available Android phone or iPhone, or restore categories from a Google Account backup when the old phone is unavailable. If you skip migration, Pixel 9 and later models—including Pixel 10—support adding a transfer later from Settings, so a factory reset is usually unnecessary.

Prepare the old phone first, choose the source and categories carefully, and keep the Pixel on strong Wi-Fi and power while apps download and cloud data synchronizes. A transfer is category-based, not a guaranteed clone: manufacturer-specific app data, some app state, home-screen arrangements, and certain recordings may not come across.

Before you turn on the Pixel 10

A few minutes of preparation prevents most failed or incomplete transfers. Complete these checks on both phones before starting:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Back up the old phone. Confirm that the Google Account backup has completed if you may need a cloud restore.
  • Charge both devices. Keep the old phone available, powered on, and unlocked during a direct transfer.
  • Use reliable Wi-Fi. A strong connection is needed for setup, app downloads, and cloud synchronization. Keep the phones close together.
  • Know the old phone’s screen lock. The transfer flow may require its PIN, pattern, or password.
  • Prepare a data-capable cable if needed. A USB-C cable is optional, but useful when Wi-Fi is weak or when you prefer a wired connection. Match the cable and adapter to the old phone’s connector; a charging-only cable will not carry data.
  • Back up third-party app data separately. For WhatsApp, use WhatsApp’s own chat-backup and migration controls before moving to the Pixel.

In the United States, Google’s preparation guidance says Pixel 10 and later phones do not have a physical SIM slot. The setup screen will guide you through the available eSIM or carrier activation process. Do not apply that hardware detail to every country without checking the configuration sold in your region.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Complete the first-run Pixel 10 setup

  1. Power on the phone. Hold the power button until the Google logo appears, then select your language and region when prompted.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi. Use the network you expect to keep available during app installation and cloud restoration. A cellular connection alone may not be sufficient for every download.
  3. Activate your SIM or eSIM. Follow the carrier and on-screen instructions. If you are transferring an existing number, keep the old phone available until activation is finished.
  4. Accept the data-transfer prompt. Pixel setup presents the option to copy data from another device or restore a backup. Select the route that matches your source phone and whether it is physically available.
  5. Sign in to the right Google Account. Use the account associated with the old phone or with the backup you intend to restore. Signing in to a different account can make the expected backup or purchased Android apps appear to be missing.
  6. Set a screen lock and biometrics. Choose the requested PIN and biometric options. These protect the new phone and may be required before a restore can proceed.
  7. Review Pixel features and personalization. Finish the remaining prompts for Google services, display preferences, and other Pixel features. You can change many choices later in Settings.

When setup offers data transfer, do not rush through the category-selection screen. Select only the items you want copied and verify that the Pixel has enough free storage for them.

Choose the transfer route that fits your situation

Situation Recommended route Connection Important limitation
Android phone is available Pair the phones during setup, then use the QR flow and select categories Wireless or USB-C wired Some manufacturer-specific app data may not transfer
iPhone is available Choose the iPhone-specific transfer flow and follow the prompts Use the connection method offered by setup Paid apps from Apple’s App Store do not transfer as Android apps
Old phone is unavailable but a Google backup exists Skip setup using another device, sign in, select the backup device, and restore categories Wi-Fi and cloud Only data included in the selected backup or supported sync can be restored
Initial setup was skipped Use Settings > Accounts & backup > Android Switch > Start Wireless or the offered wired route Only one previous source device can be used after setup; a different source requires a reset

Pixel 8 and later phones support wireless and USB-C wired transfers, which includes Pixel 10. A cable is therefore an option rather than a required purchase.

Transfer from an Android phone

Start the pairing flow

  1. On the Pixel 10 setup screen, choose the option to copy apps and data from an Android device.
  2. On the old phone, unlock the screen and follow the pairing instructions shown on both devices.
  3. When the Pixel displays a QR code, scan it with the old phone as directed. Keep both phones close, powered on, and unlocked while they establish the connection.
  4. If you prefer a wired move, connect the phones with a compatible data cable and follow the on-screen USB prompts instead of the wireless QR route.

Select what to copy

The Pixel lists transferable categories. Review each one rather than assuming that every item on the old phone will be reproduced exactly. Common categories include Google Account data, contacts, calendar events, text messages and attachments, device settings, files and folders, saved Wi-Fi details, call history, photos and videos, and apps.

Apps downloaded or purchased through Google Play can be listed for Android-to-Pixel transfer. The app itself may reinstall while its internal data does not, particularly when that data belongs to a manufacturer-specific app or is stored outside the supported backup system. For WhatsApp, complete the service’s own backup and migration process as well as the Pixel transfer.

Let the copy finish

Confirm the categories, tap the control to copy or transfer, and leave both phones alone until the Pixel reports completion. Do not turn off Wi-Fi, disconnect a cable, or lock the old phone if the screen asks you to keep it available. After the initial copy, apps may continue downloading in the background. Keep the Pixel on strong Wi-Fi and power until those installations and cloud-synced photos or videos have arrived.

Transfer from an iPhone

Use the iPhone-specific setup path

  1. At the Pixel 10 data-transfer screen, choose the option for an iPhone or iPad.
  2. Follow the connection instructions shown by the Pixel and the iPhone. Keep the iPhone unlocked and nearby while the devices communicate.
  3. Review the available categories and select the data you actually need.
  4. Start the copy and keep both devices powered until the Pixel confirms that the transfer step is complete.

Google says Pixel 10 and later can transfer most iPhone data, including passwords and passkeys, Wi-Fi networks, text messages, photos, contacts, apps, and calendars. “Most” matters: an iOS app is not converted into an Android app with all of its private data. Paid apps obtained from Apple’s App Store do not transfer as purchases on Android, and app-specific content may require the service’s own sign-in or export process.

After the move, open important services on the Pixel and sign in. Check that password or passkey entries, messages, photos, contacts, and calendars match what you expected before erasing the iPhone.

Restore from a Google Account backup without the old phone

Use cloud restore when the previous phone is lost, damaged, unavailable, or already being used by someone else. This route can restore only what was backed up or synchronized and what the Pixel identifies as supported.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  1. During Pixel setup, choose the option to set up using another device or to restore from a backup, then continue without the old phone.
  2. Connect the Pixel to Wi-Fi.
  3. Sign in with the same Google Account that created the backup.
  4. Set the requested PIN and biometric security.
  5. When the phone lists available backups, select the correct previous device. Check the device name and backup details so you do not restore an older phone by mistake.
  6. Select the categories to restore and tap Restore.

Keep the Pixel connected to Wi-Fi and power after the restore begins. Apps can take time to download and install, while photos, videos, and other synchronized data may appear gradually. A backup cannot reconstruct information that was never included in it; for missing content, check whether the relevant app has its own account-based sync or recovery option.

What comes across—and what may not

Google describes transfer support by category rather than promising a perfect image of the old phone. Use the following as an expectation guide:

Category What to expect
Google Account data Supported account data can return when you use the same account and select it for transfer or restore.
Contacts and calendars Contacts and calendar events can transfer; verify that accounts other than Google are included if you used them on the old phone.
Messages Text messages and attachments are listed among common supported categories.
Photos and videos They may copy directly or arrive through cloud synchronization. Leave the Pixel on Wi-Fi and power while the library populates.
Files and folders Supported files and folders can transfer, subject to available Pixel storage.
Wi-Fi details and call history These are listed as common transferable categories, but review them after setup rather than assuming every entry is present.
Apps Android apps downloaded or purchased through Google Play can be selected for transfer. Installation and app data are separate events.
WhatsApp chats Chat history appears in Google’s transfer information, but use WhatsApp’s own backup and migration controls as well.
Home-screen layout and recordings Support varies by source platform. Treat the layout and recordings as items to verify, not guaranteed replicas.
Manufacturer-specific app data Some data tied to another phone maker’s apps may not transfer. The app may be present while its private settings or internal records are absent.

The practical rule is simple: your Google apps and supported Android data can come across, but some manufacturer-specific app data may not. Reopen critical apps, authenticate where requested, and check their own backup or sync status before wiping the old phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finish the setup and verify the result

Allow downloads and synchronization

Open the Play Store and the apps list only after the basic transfer has completed, then let pending installations finish over Wi-Fi. Cloud-backed photos, videos, and documents can continue appearing after the setup wizard closes. Keep the phone charging if the library is large, and avoid judging the transfer as incomplete while downloads are still queued.

Check the categories that matter most

  • Open Contacts and confirm recent entries and contact counts look reasonable.
  • Open Calendar and inspect upcoming events, especially events stored in more than one account.
  • Check Messages for recent threads and attachments.
  • Open Photos or your chosen storage app and confirm that recent pictures and videos are present.
  • Open the files area and check folders that are important for work or school.
  • Launch critical apps, sign in, and verify app-specific data such as notes, saved projects, or conversations.
  • Confirm that Wi-Fi networks, call history, and device preferences transferred as expected.

Do not erase, trade in, or reset the old phone until these checks are complete and you have separately handled services whose data lives inside the app.

Transfer data after initial setup

Pixel 9 and later models support a later transfer, so Pixel 10 owners who skipped migration generally do not need to start over. On the Pixel 10, open Settings > Accounts & backup > Android Switch > Start.

  1. Open the Android Switch path above.
  2. Choose the source device, or scan the QR code shown by the Pixel when prompted.
  3. Connect the phones using the offered wireless or wired method.
  4. Select the categories to add.
  5. Tap Copy and leave both devices available until the copy finishes.

This post-setup process adds to data already on the Pixel; it is not automatically a replacement of everything you have configured. Google allows one previous source device for the post-setup transfer. If you later decide to use a different previous device, switching sources requires resetting the Pixel, which erases its current content. Confirm that the chosen source is the one you intend to keep before starting.

Troubleshoot a transfer that fails or looks incomplete

The transfer stops or the phones disconnect

  • Make sure both phones are powered on, unlocked, and running updated software.
  • Move the phones closer together and reconnect to strong Wi-Fi.
  • If wireless transfer remains unreliable, retry with a compatible USB-C data cable.
  • Keep both phones charged and avoid using them for other tasks during the copy.

The Pixel runs out of storage

When available space is too low, a transfer can pause. Open the Pixel’s storage settings, remove or move content you do not need immediately, and retry only the categories that fit. Do not assume that a failed copy will resume safely after storage is full; review what arrived before selecting the remaining categories again.

Some categories are missing

For a transfer that was skipped or incomplete, use Settings > Accounts & backup > Android Switch > Start and select the missing categories. If an app’s private data is absent, check the app’s own backup, account, export, or recovery controls. Manufacturer-specific app data may not be supported by Android Switch.

The expected cloud backup does not appear

Sign out of guesswork and verify the account: the Pixel must use the same Google Account that created the backup. Return to the backup-selection screen and choose the intended old device rather than the newest-looking entry. If no usable backup exists, cloud restore cannot recreate data that was never backed up; investigate the original app’s sync or recovery method instead.

The old device is gone and there is no usable backup

The cited Google restore path cannot recover data that was neither backed up nor synchronized. Check each important service for an online account, export file, or recovery process. Avoid factory-resetting the Pixel while you investigate, because doing so removes data already on the new phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A final handover checklist

  • Pixel 10 activates on the intended SIM or eSIM.
  • The correct Google Account is signed in.
  • A screen lock and requested biometrics are configured.
  • Contacts, calendars, messages, photos, videos, and key files are present.
  • Important apps open successfully and have their own data restored or synchronized.
  • WhatsApp chat backup and migration have been completed separately.
  • Pending app downloads and cloud synchronization have finished or are clearly progressing.
  • The Pixel has enough free storage for the content you kept.
  • The old phone remains untouched until every critical item has been checked.
