To set up a Freely box, connect it to an HDMI input on your TV, connect it to your home internet by Wi-Fi or supported Ethernet, then follow the on-screen setup. You do not need an aerial for Freely’s internet-delivered channels. The exact ports and menu labels vary by device, so use its included guide for model-specific instructions.
Before you start: check what your TV needs
If your television already has Freely built in, you may not need a separate box. An HDMI-compatible TV without built-in Freely can use a compatible Freely streaming device. Freely’s general device guidance describes connecting a streaming device to the TV by HDMI: Freely help.
- Check that the TV has an available HDMI input.
- Have your home Wi-Fi name and password ready.
- If you plan to use Ethernet, check that both the device and router have Ethernet ports and that a cable can reach between them. Not every device necessarily has an Ethernet port.
- Freely recommends broadband of at least 10 Mbps for its service. This is Freely’s recommendation, not a guarantee of performance in every home: Freely help.
How to connect a Freely box to your TV and internet
- Connect the device to the TV. Plug the Freely streaming device into an HDMI input, or use the HDMI cable supplied with it, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Note which HDMI input you used.
- Connect the power. Use the power supply and cable specified for your device. If you are using Ethernet and the model supports it, connect the cable from the device to the router before powering on.
- Select the HDMI input. Turn on the TV and device. On the TV, select the HDMI input used for the Freely device. The input button may be labelled Source, Input, or show an HDMI symbol; the label depends on the TV.
- Follow the on-screen setup. Depending on the device, setup may ask you to choose a language, enter a location or postcode, connect to the internet, or scan for channels. Use the supplied device guide if the prompts differ from these general steps.
- Connect to Wi-Fi if prompted. Choose your home network from the list and enter its password. If you connected Ethernet and the device supports it, Freely says the connection should be automatic.
Freely recommends Ethernet where it is available, but Wi-Fi is also an option. Wired setup is only possible if your particular device and router have the necessary ports and you can run a cable between them. General Freely instructions do not establish Ethernet support for every box: Freely help.

Do you need an aerial?
No aerial or satellite dish is required for Freely’s internet-delivered service. With Wi-Fi alone, Freely’s channel guidance lists over 24 channels, including live streams from BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and 5, as well as on-demand content. The count reflects Freely guidance accessed on 7 October 2026; check the current channel listing for the latest line-up.

An aerial can provide a wider range of channels on a compatible Freely television, but availability varies by location and transmitter. If using one, connect its lead to the TV’s aerial input before the channel scan. The socket may be labelled RF in, Antenna, Aerial, or Ant in. Do not assume a separate streaming box accepts an aerial; the general guidance does not establish an aerial connection for every box. Check the specific model’s ports and manual.

If your router or Wi-Fi password changes, open Settings and choose Connection, then select the new network and enter its password. Freely gives those labels for changing a connection, but menus can differ between models: Freely help.

Fix common setup and playback problems
- The TV shows no picture from the box: Confirm the device is powered on and that the TV is set to the HDMI input it uses. Check that the HDMI connection is secure and consult the device guide for its power and connection requirements.
- The box will not connect to Wi-Fi: Check that the router is working, select the correct network, and re-enter the password. Try the device where the Wi-Fi signal is stronger. Freely recommends at least 10 Mbps broadband; actual wireless performance can also depend on signal strength and the home network.
- Other devices are offline too: The issue may be with the router or broadband connection rather than the Freely device. Restart the router; if the connection remains unavailable, contact your broadband provider.
- Only the Freely device is offline: Check its connection settings and reconnect to the network. If the network has changed, use Settings > Connection where those labels are available on your model.
- Aerial channels or picture are missing: Check that the aerial lead is secure and undamaged. Reception depends on local transmitter and signal conditions. If work at roof height is needed, Freely advises using a qualified aerial installer.
- On-demand playback still fails: Check for software updates and restart the device. A factory reset should be a later step: Freely warns that it deletes saved data, logins, and settings, so you will have to set up the device again.
