You can create a usable Discord server in a few minutes: make the server, add a small set of channels, check basic permissions, and invite people. A small friends group can stop there. Community, Onboarding, Server Guide, and AutoMod are optional tools for servers that need a more guided or public-facing setup.
Create your Discord server
- In Discord’s desktop app or browser client, select Add a Server in the left server list.
- Choose Create My Own to start from scratch, or select a template. If starting from scratch, choose whether the server is for a club or community or for friends.
- Enter a server name, add an icon if you want one, and select Create. You can change the name and icon later; Discord advises new owners not to feel pressured to perfect them during creation. See Discord’s server creation instructions.
Your server is ready for channels and conversation. The layout suggestions below are starting points, not required Discord settings.
Choose a small, clear channel layout
Start with the spaces members will actually use. For example, create an information or announcements channel, a general text channel, and a voice channel for live conversation. Add categories to group related channels as the server grows. Discord also documents forum channels for Community servers.

A newcomer should be able to tell where to read updates, where to talk, and whether a channel is for text or voice without needing a long explanation. Avoid adding channels just because they might be useful someday; a concise layout helps answer the new member’s basic question: “What am I supposed to do here?”

Set roles and permissions
Start with the default role
The @everyone role sets baseline server permissions. Give ordinary members access to the channels and actions they need, then add roles only when people need meaningfully different responsibilities or access. Discord’s guides to role management and permissions explain how server roles and channel-level controls work.
Use channel permissions for specific access
Server-wide roles provide the baseline, while channel or category permissions let you adjust access in particular spaces. Check that private channels are visible only to their intended roles and that members can reach the channels they need. If one channel has an access problem, adjust that channel or category rather than granting broad server permissions to everyone.
Be cautious with Administrator
The Administrator permission grants all permissions and bypasses channel restrictions. Reserve it for people who genuinely need full control. Discord’s role hierarchy also limits which members can manage other roles or users, so consider both a role’s permissions and its position in the hierarchy when assigning responsibilities.

Invite members with the right link settings
Create an invite link using the permissions available to the server owner or invite managers. Discord supports instant, custom, temporary, and permanent invite types. Before sharing a link widely, decide whether it should expire and whether to limit how many times it can be used. A link intended for a one-time or small-group invitation needs different settings from one shared publicly. See Discord’s invite guide for the available options.

Choose the right path: friends server or Community server
| Setup path | Best fit | What to configure |
|---|---|---|
| Friends server | A small private group that mainly needs places to chat. | Basic text and voice channels, sensible default permissions, and only the roles the group needs. |
| Community server | A larger or public-facing group that benefits from moderation and a guided joining experience. | Complete Discord’s safety checks, consider Onboarding and Server Guide, and configure moderation tools as appropriate. |
Community is optional; a small friends server does not need it to start chatting. Discord’s Community server setup guide describes required safety checks, including a verification setting. Some Community features have separate eligibility limits, so do not assume every server can use every feature. In particular, Server Discovery availability is not guaranteed to all servers.
Add Onboarding only if members need guided choices
Community Onboarding lets new members choose roles and channels by answering questions. Discord’s documented enablement criteria require at least seven default channels, of which at least five must allow @everyone to view and send messages. These are product requirements for enabling Onboarding, not a recommended minimum layout for every server. Review Discord’s current Onboarding FAQ for details, then preview the new-member experience before publishing. Keep the questions focused so newcomers are not faced with unnecessary choices.
Consider Server Guide and AutoMod as the server grows
Server Guide
Server Guide is part of Onboarding. It supports a welcome sign, three to five tasks for new members, and resource pages. It can help a larger server direct newcomers to rules, useful information, or first steps; it is not necessary for a small group that can explain things informally. Discord’s Server Guide FAQ describes its components.

AutoMod
AutoMod offers built-in content filters, including keyword and spam rules. If you choose to use it, check the rules against the kind of conversation your server allows so filters do not block ordinary posts unnecessarily. Discord’s AutoMod FAQ says rule changes are currently made on desktop by members with Manage Server or Administrator permissions; it does not document mobile rule editing as available.
