To make a first print on a Bambu Lab A2L, follow the manufacturer’s sequence: identify your package, assemble the printer from the A2L quick-start guide, power on and allow initialization calibration to finish, check and align the build plate, load filament from either AMS Lite or the external spool holder, choose a model, verify the printer, filament and plate settings, start the job, and remove the cooled model according to the plate instructions.

The physical assembly differs between the standard A2L and the A2L Combo. Do not assume that every A2L includes AMS Lite, and do not improvise screw, transport-lock or cable instructions from a generic printer guide.

Confirm which A2L package you have

Bambu Lab documents separate package contents and setup resources for the single-printer A2L and the multicolor A2L Combo. The manufacturer’s product information lists AMS Lite with the Combo package; the standard package uses the external spool-holder route unless you have obtained AMS Lite separately. Contents can vary by region and bundle, so compare the label and parts in your box with the current A2L support and quick-start listings before assembling anything.

Package Filament-loading path for the first print What to verify
Standard A2L External spool holder Confirm the holder and the parts listed for your regional package.
A2L Combo AMS Lite or the external holder, depending on how you configure the job Confirm that AMS Lite and its accessories are present before following an AMS-based loading path.

Neither package is universally better for a beginner. Choose the path that matches the hardware you actually received and whether your first project needs multicolor material. If your first project is a single-color PLA model, the external holder is a valid route even when you own the Combo. If you specifically want multicolor printing, confirm that AMS Lite is present and follow the Combo-specific setup material.

Unbox with the package distinction in mind

  • Keep the carton, protective pieces and small hardware together while you identify the variant.
  • Compare the parts in the box with the package-specific list rather than a photograph of a different regional bundle.
  • Do not treat a missing AMS Lite as a printer failure until you have confirmed that the order was a Combo package.
  • Keep the quick-start guide open while unpacking; the A2L and A2L Combo instructions are not interchangeable for every part.

Use the A2L-specific assembly instructions

Start with Bambu Lab’s model-specific quick-start guide rather than a general A-series video. Its listed chapters cover packaging removal, A2L assembly, external spool-holder installation, and powering on for initialization calibration. The support hub is the authoritative place to find the guide that matches your package.

Bambu Lab also publishes an official A2L unboxing video. The available documentation establishes that these resources exist, but the detailed PDF fastener, transport-restraint, cable and tool sequence is not reproduced here. Those details are easy to get wrong when inferred from memory, and a misplaced restraint or connector can damage a new machine.

  1. Put the unopened cartons on a stable, clean surface with enough room to rotate the printer and reach the rear and sides.
  2. Identify whether the carton is the standard A2L or Combo package.
  3. Open the matching quick-start guide from the support hub before removing internal restraints or protective pieces.
  4. Follow the guide’s diagrams for packaging removal, frame assembly, holder installation and every cable or fastener.
  5. Keep spare screws, tools and protective materials until the guide confirms that assembly is complete; do not discard packaging until you have completed a successful print.

Use the diagrams for the actual machine in front of you. Do not substitute a screw length, cable route, transport-lock step or tool based on a memory of another Bambu Lab printer. If a part in your box does not match the guide, pause and check the package listing or regional support page before powering on.

Power on and let initialization finish

After the mechanical assembly is complete, connect power as directed in the A2L guide and switch the printer on. The first-print workflow begins with initialization and calibration. Let that process run until the printer reports that it is ready; do not interrupt it, move the machine or start a print while calibration is active.

No reliable manufacturer duration is established for this first initialization, so avoid promises such as “setup takes 20 minutes.” The time can vary with the machine state, firmware and calibration routine. The useful endpoint is not a stopwatch reading: it is the ready status shown by the printer.

Power-on checklist

  • Place the assembled printer on a stable surface before switching it on.
  • Confirm that all packaging and transport restraints named by the A2L guide have been handled.
  • Keep the machine stationary while initialization and calibration are running.
  • Read any on-screen prompt fully and complete the requested action before proceeding.
  • Do not send a print merely because the screen has lit; wait for the ready state.

Prepare and check the build plate

The first-print guide includes a heatbed check before a model is started. The plate must be oriented and aligned correctly on the heatbed. Bambu Lab’s Combo quick-start extract specifically warns that incorrect alignment can scratch the touchscreen, so treat plate placement as a required setup check rather than a cosmetic detail.

Plate checklist

  • Use the plate type and orientation shown by the A2L instructions for the installed surface.
  • Seat the plate fully and align it with the heatbed before continuing.
  • Make sure no packaging film, debris or loose filament is trapped between the plate and heatbed.
  • If you have touched the build surface, wash it with hot water and detergent as recommended in the quick-start material, then follow the guide’s drying and reinstallation directions.
  • When slicing, select the same plate type that is physically installed. A profile for a different surface can change first-layer behavior.

Plate alignment matters mechanically as well as cosmetically. An incorrectly positioned plate can interfere with the printer’s movement and, as the Combo quick-start warning notes, can scratch the touchscreen. If the plate does not sit as shown in the guide, remove it and reposition it instead of forcing it into place.

The source material does not establish one universal cooling time or removal technique for every A2L plate. Use the instructions for your installed plate instead of prying a hot model off by force.

Load PLA or another profiled filament

Bambu Lab lists PLA as a suitable material, making it a sensible first-print choice when the selected model has a PLA profile. Use filament that matches the profile you intend to select; do not assume that an unknown spool has the same temperature, drying or material requirements as a named profile. The filament choice, plate choice and printer profile should agree before you start the job.

Standard A2L: external spool holder

  1. Install the external spool holder exactly as shown in the A2L quick-start guide.
  2. Place the spool so it can unwind freely without rubbing the frame or snagging on nearby objects.
  3. Route the filament through the printer’s specified guide path.
  4. Use the printer’s loading controls to advance the filament until the machine detects a loaded strand and purges as directed.
  5. Check that filament is moving from the spool rather than pulling the spool sideways or forming a loop.

The external-holder route is the normal distinction between the standard package and the Combo’s AMS Lite route. Do not select an AMS slot in the software when the filament is actually connected through the external holder; choose the material path the printer presents for that configuration.

A2L Combo: AMS Lite

  1. Confirm that AMS Lite is included and assembled according to the Combo instructions.
  2. Place the selected spool in the AMS Lite position shown for that material.
  3. Feed the filament into the assigned inlet and use the printer’s load command.
  4. Verify the slot and material shown on the printer match the spool you intend to use.
  5. Let the system complete loading and any purge step before starting the print.

The Combo can also use an external spool path where supported. The important distinction is to select the route your hardware and profile describe; AMS Lite is not a universal component of every A2L box. For a first job, load one known spool, verify its displayed material assignment and avoid changing slots while the printer is loading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a first model and prepare the job

The A2L first-print workflow lets you choose a model from files available to the printer, confirm its settings and then start the job. For a first attempt, use a preloaded model or a model with a manufacturer profile rather than changing many variables at once. A simple model gives you a clear check of plate seating, filament feeding and the first layer.

Using a printer file

  1. Open the printer’s model or file list.
  2. Select a small, uncomplicated model that is already available on the machine.
  3. Review the displayed printer, filament and build-plate selections.
  4. Correct any selection that does not match the installed plate or loaded material.
  5. Start the job only after the printer confirms the required material and plate.

Using Bambu Studio

Bambu Lab identifies Bambu Studio as its slicer and says it supplies printer and filament profiles. Install the current version from Bambu Lab’s official software channel, add the A2L profile that matches your device, import the model, and choose the loaded filament and installed plate. Slice the model, inspect the preview for obvious omissions or unsupported settings, then send the job to the printer using the workflow shown by the software.

Profile names and software controls can change. If Bambu Studio offers more than one A2L or plate entry, select the exact device and surface you own rather than the closest-sounding option. A profile for another printer or plate can make an otherwise good model unsuitable for the installed hardware.

Settings to verify before sending

  • Printer: the A2L profile matching your machine.
  • Filament: the loaded PLA or other named material, including the correct AMS Lite slot or external path.
  • Plate: the exact build-plate type and orientation installed on the heatbed.
  • Model placement: the object fits within the displayed plate boundaries.
  • Preview: the sliced result contains the expected model and does not show an obvious mismatch between the selected material, printer and plate.

Run the first print

  1. Confirm that initialization and calibration have finished.
  2. Confirm that the build plate is correctly oriented, aligned and clean.
  3. Confirm that the selected filament is loaded through AMS Lite or the external holder as appropriate.
  4. Confirm the model’s printer, filament and plate settings.
  5. Start the print from the printer or Bambu Studio.
  6. Watch the beginning of the job long enough to verify that the first layer is being placed on the intended area and that the filament is feeding normally.
  7. Allow the printer to complete the job without opening panels, pulling the filament or moving the machine unnecessarily.

The manufacturer’s first-print guide includes model selection, settings confirmation, printing and model removal as distinct stages. If the printer pauses for a material, plate or calibration prompt, resolve that prompt before continuing instead of bypassing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Early observation is useful because it can reveal a wrong plate selection, an incorrectly assigned AMS slot or a spool that cannot unwind. If the printer displays a warning, use the stated correction and restart the relevant step rather than repeatedly dismissing the message.

Remove the finished model safely

When printing is complete, follow the instructions for the installed build plate. The safest removal method depends on that plate’s surface and the model’s adhesion. Do not assume that a still-hot model should be forced off, and do not use a metal tool in a way that can gouge the plate or strike the heatbed.

  1. Wait for the printer to reach the plate condition specified by the plate instructions.
  2. Check that the model has released or can be removed using the supplied procedure.
  3. Use only the recommended removal motion and tool for that plate.
  4. Inspect the surface for leftover filament before the next job.
  5. Return the plate to its normal storage or printer position.

If the model resists removal, stop rather than increasing force. Confirm that the plate was clean, correctly aligned and sliced with its matching profile. The guide does not establish one cooling interval for every plate, so follow the instructions for the surface you actually installed.

Troubleshoot the first-print workflow

The box does not contain the expected AMS Lite

Recheck the package label. AMS Lite is associated with the Combo package in the cited product information, while the standard A2L has an external-spool route. Regional bundles can differ, so compare the contents with the package-specific support listing before treating a missing component as a hardware fault. If the order was for a standard A2L, proceed with the external holder rather than waiting for an AMS component that was never included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The printer will not start the job

  • Check that initialization and calibration have completed.
  • Confirm the plate is seated and that the selected plate profile matches it.
  • Confirm that the selected filament is loaded and assigned to the requested slot or external path.
  • Read the on-screen prompt completely; a material, cover, plate or calibration warning may require a specific correction.
  • If the job came from Bambu Studio, verify that the selected printer is the A2L rather than a similarly named device.

Filament does not feed

  • Check that the spool can unwind freely.
  • Verify the strand is routed through the guide path shown in the A2L instructions.
  • For AMS Lite, verify the selected slot and inlet.
  • Unload and reload through the printer’s normal controls rather than pulling hard on the filament.
  • Confirm that the material shown in the printer or slicer matches the spool you loaded.

The model is difficult to remove

Stop forcing it while the plate is hot. Follow the installed plate’s cooling and removal directions, and inspect whether the plate was clean, correctly oriented and aligned. If the model was sliced for a different plate type, correct the profile before trying the next print.

The touchscreen or frame was scratched during setup

Stop and review plate alignment and the A2L assembly diagrams. The Combo quick-start extract warns that incorrect build-plate alignment can scratch the touchscreen. Do not continue repeated attempts until the plate is seated as shown in the model-specific guide.

The physical parts do not match the guide

Pause assembly and verify the package variant and region. Bambu Lab lists separate support resources for the A2L and Combo, and regional contents can vary. Do not force a connector or substitute hardware from another printer. Use the current A2L support listing to locate the matching guide.

Check firmware before relying on a version number

Firmware is date-sensitive. The A2L firmware page showed version 01.01.05.00, listed as Bambu Lab 2026 with an October 12, 2026 release date, when the source was checked. That page describes a print-then-cut feature and other optimizations and showed no known issues at that time. Because releases can change and the page is in Chinese, open the live A2L firmware download page and verify the current release, device applicability and regional availability before updating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not interrupt a firmware update. Keep the printer powered and connected as the update instructions require, and wait for the normal restart before beginning calibration or a print. A version number from an older page should not override a newer release shown for your device.

What the A2L is designed to handle

Bambu Lab lists a build volume of 330 × 320 × 325 mm. That capacity is useful when a project needs a comparatively large single piece, but it does not change the first-print sequence. Begin with a simple model that fits comfortably inside the selected plate boundaries; move to larger or multicolor projects after you have confirmed reliable plate placement, filament feeding and profile selection.

The large volume is a capability, not a reason to begin with the largest possible object. A smaller first model makes it easier to see whether the plate is aligned, the selected profile is correct and the external or AMS Lite feed path is working normally.

How long does A2L initial calibration take?

No dependable duration is established in the manufacturer material cited here. Let initialization and calibration finish until the printer reports it is ready rather than relying on a time estimate.

Can I use PLA for the first print?

PLA is listed as suitable by Bambu Lab and is a practical starting material when the model has a matching PLA profile. Select the material profile that matches the filament you actually loaded.

Should I wash the A2L build plate?

The Combo quick-start material recommends washing the plate with hot water and detergent if it has been touched by hand. Follow the full plate instructions for drying and reinstalling it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which slicer should I use with the A2L?

Bambu Lab identifies Bambu Studio as its slicer and provides printer and filament profiles. Select the exact A2L and plate entries that match your machine and installed surface.

Why will the printer not start my first print?

Check that calibration has finished, the plate is seated and correctly profiled, the filament is loaded through the correct AMS Lite or external route, and any on-screen material, plate or calibration prompt has been resolved.

What if the finished model will not come off?

Do not force it while the plate is hot. Follow the removal and cooling instructions for your installed plate, and verify that the plate was clean, aligned and selected correctly in the slicer.

The Bottom Line

The reliable A2L first-print path is package check, model-specific assembly, completed initialization and calibration, correctly aligned plate, matching filament and profile, model selection, settings confirmation, printing and plate-specific removal. The standard A2L and A2L Combo differ mainly in package contents and filament-loading options, so follow the guide for the hardware you actually received.
