For crisp desktop text and smooth gameplay, keep the monitor at its native 3840 × 2160 resolution, make interface elements larger with display scaling rather than lowering resolution, then select the fastest refresh rate your full setup supports at 4K. The available mode depends on the monitor, graphics device, connection, operating system, and game.
1. Check the connection before changing display settings
A monitor’s advertised maximum refresh rate is not necessarily available through every input. Check the monitor manual and graphics device specifications for the exact port and cable combination needed to run 3840 × 2160 at your target refresh rate, with HDR or variable refresh rate (VRR) if you plan to use them. The monitor may also require an on-screen display (OSD) setting to enable a high-bandwidth mode or Adaptive Sync.
Compare the complete path—not just the cable label: the same input must exist on both devices, and that connection must support the resolution and features you want together. Apple’s guidance for certain compatible Mac setups calls for a direct connection and an Ultra High Speed 48 Gbps HDMI cable; this is specific to the supported Mac configurations described by Apple’s display guidance, not a universal requirement for all PCs and monitors.
2. Set native 4K resolution for sharp text
In Windows, open Settings > System > Display, select the 4K monitor, and choose the resolution marked Recommended. On a standard 4K UHD display, that is normally 3840 × 2160. Microsoft notes that using a resolution below a display’s native resolution can make text less sharp. See Microsoft’s resolution and layout instructions.

- Superior Color Performance: High dynamic range (HDR) technology and 95% DCI-P3 professional color gamut provide amazing color accuracy and vibrant visuals
- Package Contents: Includes DisplayPort cable, L-shaped Screwdriver, Power cord, Quick start guide, and Warranty Card
3. Make text readable with scaling
If text and controls look too small at native 4K, adjust Scale & layout in the same Display settings instead of reducing resolution. Start with Windows’ recommended scale, then adjust to suit the monitor’s size, your viewing distance, and your eyesight; there is no single percentage that is right for every setup. For larger text without changing the overall layout as much, use Settings > Accessibility > Text size. Microsoft explains both options in its guide to making text and apps bigger.
4. Choose the fastest refresh rate available at 4K
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- Select the 4K monitor, then choose a refresh rate from the available list.
- After changing it, confirm the display still shows 3840 × 2160 and the intended refresh rate.
The list reflects what Windows can use with the selected display and current configuration. Microsoft marks rates that do not support the current resolution with an asterisk; selecting one can change the resolution. The monitor’s maximum may also depend on its input, cable, graphics output, or an OSD mode. For details, see Microsoft’s refresh-rate instructions.

- Quality Visuals: The VG270K 27" IPS monitor with 3840 x 2160 UHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
- AMD FreeSync Premium Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync Premium, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provides the smoothest gaming experience.
- Quick Refresh Rate: Different content has different refresh rate and resolution requirements. If you are playing an FPS or racing game, you will need a monitor with a high refresh rate. However, if you are doing office work or streaming videos, a higher resolution will be more beneficial. With DFR technology, users can choose a higher resolution, or a higher refresh rate based on what is suitable for them.
- Responsive: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter if the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting.
- ZeroFrame Design: With a Nitro VG270K monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.
5. Enable VRR only when the setup supports it
VRR—often labeled Adaptive Sync, FreeSync, or G-SYNC-compatible—can coordinate the display’s refresh with a game’s changing frame rate. Availability depends on the monitor, graphics hardware, connection, drivers, and game. Check the monitor’s OSD and the graphics control panel for the relevant setting; Windows’ Advanced display information can also show whether the selected display supports variable refresh rate. A game may manage VRR automatically when the feature is enabled and supported. VRR does not replace checking that the monitor is actually running at 4K and the refresh rate you chose; Microsoft describes the Windows display information in its refresh-rate guidance.

HDR requires compatible support across the display, computer, and connection. Microsoft lists DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0 or higher, USB-C, and Thunderbolt among interfaces that can support HDR on compatible displays; the exact combination still matters. See Microsoft’s overview of HDR in Windows.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
If black text has colored fringes or colors look wrong, compare the desktop with HDR turned off. Microsoft recommends checking graphics drivers and connection options for colored fringes; if HDR works over DisplayPort but not the current HDMI route, DisplayPort may be preferable. HDR does not fix a non-native resolution, small interface scaling, or an incorrect refresh-rate selection. Use Windows HDR settings to check and change the feature.

On macOS, open System Settings > Displays and select the external monitor to choose an available display mode. Some displays also need a setting in their built-in menus before high-resolution modes or VRR appear. If the desired option is missing, check the exact Mac model, the Mac and monitor ports, the monitor input and OSD settings, and both devices’ documentation.

Apple says certain Mac models can support up to 240 Hz at 4K on compatible displays; that ceiling applies only to the listed models and required setup, not to every Mac or 4K monitor. Apple’s 8K display guidance covers the supported configurations and connection considerations.
8. Calibrate HDR only if the image needs it
For an external HDR monitor, Microsoft directs users to the Windows HDR Calibration app. Its instructions for calibrating a built-in display apply to built-in panels, not external monitors. See Microsoft’s built-in display calibration page for that distinction.
Quick Recap
If 4K and the target refresh rate are not both available
- Recheck the monitor input, graphics output, and cable against the manuals for both devices.
- Look for an OSD setting that enables the monitor’s higher-bandwidth mode or VRR.
- In Windows Advanced display, verify the resolution and refresh rate together; do not assume a listed rate applies at native 4K.
- On a Mac, confirm that the exact model and connection support the mode, and check whether the monitor requires a built-in-menu setting.
- If text is blurry, restore the Recommended native resolution and tune scale or text size. If text has colored fringes only with HDR enabled, compare with HDR off and check drivers and connection options.
