Connect the player’s main HDMI output to a TV input that supports the 4K and HDR formats you want, then enable that input’s enhanced HDMI mode if the TV requires it. If you use a receiver or soundbar between the player and TV, it must also pass the required video format. For sound, choose a connection and player output setting supported by your audio system.

Before connecting: check the whole HDMI path

A 4K/HDR signal depends on every link: the player, HDMI cable, selected TV input, and any receiver or soundbar between them. Panasonic’s connection guidance specifies HDCP 2.2, 4K/60p (4:4:4), and HDR support for the connected equipment, and an 18 Gbps HDMI cable for 4K/60p. Panasonic’s 4K connection guidance provides the requirements for its documented setup.

Check the manuals for the exact models and ports. Some TVs reserve full-bandwidth or advanced-format support for particular HDMI inputs. Sony’s TV guidance recommends a Premium High Speed 18 Gbps cable for applicable 4K/HDR connections and explains that supported devices may require Enhanced Format to be enabled. • Look for the TV input’s supported resolution, frame rate, HDR formats, and HDCP version.
  • Check whether the receiver or soundbar passes the player’s 4K/HDR format, rather than assuming that an HDMI input guarantees it.
  • Use a cable that meets the bandwidth requirement of your signal. A more expensive cable does not improve a signal when the existing cable already works and meets the specification.

Connect the player directly to the TV

  1. Find the player’s main HDMI output, labeled for video and audio, and connect it to a TV HDMI input that supports the desired 4K/HDR signal.
  2. Select that HDMI input on the TV.
  3. Set the player’s resolution to Auto to start, if that option is available. Sony recommends Auto for optimum output on the UBP-X700/K family; Panasonic’s DP-UB820 manual lists Auto alongside 4K60p and 24p output options, with output depending on connected-device support. Sony UBP-X700/K help guide and Panasonic DP-UB820 operating instructions
  4. In the TV settings, enable the manufacturer’s enhanced HDMI mode for that input if required. The name varies by brand and model; examples include Enhanced Format, UHD Color, or a deep-color setting. Use the TV manual’s exact menu path and port guidance.

For a 4K/60p path, make sure the cable supports 18 Gbps. Panasonic specifies that requirement for its documented 4K/60p setup, while Sony recommends an 18 Gbps High Speed or Premium High Speed cable for the UBP-X700/K family. Panasonic’s connection guidance; Sony’s player support guidance

Choose the audio connection that fits your equipment

Connection What it does What to verify
Player → TV → ARC/eARC audio system Uses the TV as the video connection point and sends audio onward to the audio system. Audio formats depend on the TV’s passthrough and ARC/eARC support. Check the TV and audio-system manuals.
Player → receiver or soundbar → TV Sends the player’s audio and video through the audio system. The receiver or soundbar must pass the player’s required 4K/HDR format. This route can let a compatible system decode supported audio formats directly.
Player → TV, with separate audio connection Keeps video away from an receiver or soundbar that cannot pass the required signal. The audio connection and the TV’s audio output determine which formats are available; some routes may limit audio formats.

For the receiver/soundbar route, connect the player’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the audio system, then connect the audio system’s HDMI output to the TV input documented for the desired format. Enable Enhanced Format or its equivalent on the participating ports if the devices require it. Sony recommends enabling Enhanced Format on the relevant soundbar or receiver and TV ports for supported HDR/Enhanced Format signals. Sony receiver and soundbar troubleshooting guidance

If the receiver or soundbar cannot pass the needed 4K/HDR format, connect the player directly to the TV and route audio separately. Sony recommends this approach when a receiver cannot pass the signal. The available audio formats will depend on the TV’s output and the capabilities of ARC/eARC or another compatible connection. Set player audio output for the speakers you use

TV speakers

Use the player’s combined video/audio HDMI output. On Sony’s UBP-X700/K, OUT 1 carries video and audio while OUT 2 is audio only. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance says to use OUT 1 for TV speakers and set HDMI Audio Output to Auto or HDMI1. Those port names and settings are specific to that player family. Receiver or soundbar

Choose audio output settings compatible with the receiving device. In Panasonic’s DP-UB820/UB9000 example for Atmos/TrueHD, Panasonic directs users to connect the player to the soundbar and the soundbar to the TV, set Dolby Audio and DTS/DTS-HD output to Bitstream, turn secondary audio off, and configure the TV for sound-system passthrough. Optical, ARC, and eARC connections can support different audio formats. Check the manuals for the player, TV, and audio system before expecting a particular format such as lossless or object-based audio to reach the speakers.

Match HDR output to the disc and display

HDR is not created by enabling a setting: the disc, player, connection, and display must support a compatible format. Panasonic’s DP-UB820 manual specifies that Dolby Vision requires a compatible display and disc; its HDR10+ operation likewise depends on compatible equipment and media. The manual says HDR10+ takes precedence when both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are enabled and the listed conditions are met. Panasonic DP-UB820 operating instructions

Some players adapt output for a non-HDR TV. Sony says the UBP-X700/K adjusts HDR output to SDR when connected to a non-HDR TV; this is a behavior of that model family, not a setting to assume on every player. Sony UBP-X700/K help guide

Troubleshoot missing picture, HDR, or sound

No 4K or HDR picture

  • Confirm the selected TV input supports the desired resolution and HDR format.
  • Check support and enhanced-format settings on every receiver or soundbar in the video path.
  • Verify the cable meets the required bandwidth; Panasonic specifies 18 Gbps for its documented 4K/60p connection.
  • Temporarily connect the player directly to the TV. If the signal returns, the receiver or soundbar’s passthrough or HDMI format setting may be the limiting link.

No sound from the TV

For the Sony UBP-X700/K family, connect the TV to OUT 1 and set HDMI Audio Output to Auto or HDMI1. If HDMI2 is selected, Sony says a powered device must be connected to OUT 2. Sony’s no-sound troubleshooting steps

The soundbar does not show Atmos or TrueHD

Check that the player connects to the soundbar’s HDMI input, the soundbar connects to the TV’s ARC/eARC port as its manual directs, and the correct input is selected on the soundbar. For Panasonic’s DP-UB820/UB9000 setup example, also check that Dolby and DTS output are set to Bitstream. Panasonic’s audio setup guidance

The picture disappears when routed through an AVR

Check whether the AVR supports the player’s output mode and whether its HDMI signal format is set appropriately. Direct-connect the player to the TV to isolate whether passthrough is the cause. Sony’s receiver troubleshooting guidance
