To run educational videos as a continuous YouTube Live feed, verify that your channel can stream, create an event in YouTube Studio, connect an encoder with your stream URL and key, then test the picture, sound, and stream health before going live. Plan separately for interruptions and replays: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so a 24-hour broadcast is not a dependable way to create a complete archive.
Choose a continuous feed or scheduled broadcasts
Decide what viewers need before configuring the encoder. A single continuous event gives viewers one live watch page, but it can be harder to restart cleanly after a failure and may not produce a complete YouTube archive. Shorter scheduled events require more event and URL management, but fit YouTube’s archive guidance better. If on-demand access matters, keep a local recording and plan separate uploads or shorter broadcasts rather than relying on one uninterrupted day-long stream.
- One continuous event: prioritize a stable, always-available live destination and assign someone to monitor and respond to failures.
- Shorter scheduled events: plan start and end times, transitions, and how viewers will find each event.
- Live plus on-demand: record locally and publish a separate replay or lesson when appropriate.
YouTube’s archive guidance says streams under 12 hours may be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Check channel eligibility and content rights
Confirm live access before the scheduled start
Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned launch. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16. For streams featuring 13–15-year-olds without a visibly accompanying adult, YouTube may disable live chat or remove access to chat features. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Clear every part of the lesson
Educational purpose alone does not grant permission to rebroadcast third-party material. Check rights for the video, music, images, clips, and other included content, including the intended territories and any later replay or archive. YouTube’s livestream terms require providers to have necessary rights for live content on Google services, including relevant music licensing rights, and to comply with applicable laws and regulations. Prefer original, licensed, or otherwise cleared material, and retain the documentation for your permissions.
Choose and prepare an encoder
An encoder sends the audio and video feed to YouTube. You can use software on a computer or a hardware encoder; YouTube associates professional-grade hardware encoders with higher-production events, but no particular device is required for every setup. Choose based on your inputs, output quality, operator familiarity, and tested reliability. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

For prerecorded lessons, confirm that the encoder can play the program in the intended order and repeat it if that is your plan. Test a representative segment, including motion, titles, transitions, and audio. Keep a separate local recording if you need a dependable copy.

- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the event you prepared. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder’s service or stream configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, publish it, or share it with people who should not control the stream. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
- Set video and audio output. Choose a resolution and frame rate the encoder and upload connection can sustain. Configure a supported codec, constant bitrate, and RTMPS where available. YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps. Use the current encoder settings and bitrate table for the exact recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Set the keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Confirm the encoder’s actual output settings, not just a profile name.
- Preview before going public. Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check framing, playback order, audio level, synchronization, and stream health, then verify the event can be opened from your channel and watch page, including on a phone.
Set a bitrate your connection can sustain
Use upload capacity—not download speed—to plan the broadcast. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% of upload bandwidth unused. The bitrate figures below are platform recommendations, not guarantees of stability; the applicable value depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate.

For any other combination, consult YouTube’s settings table; do not treat the examples as universal targets. YouTube’s network guidance also says to account for both primary and backup encoder traffic, plus headroom, within the available upload capacity.
Plan monitoring and recovery
Test the failure you expect to recover from
If you use a backup encoder, test failover before relying on it: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet connection and confirm that the viewer’s player switches to the backup. A second encoder will not fix a shared internet outage, and neither a backup encoder nor a UPS guarantees uninterrupted service. YouTube recommends testing backup encoders and monitoring the feed; it does not promise automatic recovery from every disconnection. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Keep an operator and a local copy
- Assign someone to watch stream health and check picture and audio throughout the broadcast.
- Verify the live event from the channel and watch pages, not only from the encoder preview.
- Record locally and check that the file continues to grow and remains playable.
- Write down who will restart or switch encoders and how viewers will be notified if a new event and URL are needed.
- Consider a UPS for power interruptions affecting the computer and router, while recognizing that it cannot prevent network or YouTube outages.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
