To set up a 100 Hz monitor, connect it to a compatible video output, select the correct input on the monitor if needed, then open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display in Windows. Choose the monitor and select 100 Hz if it is available. The same page shows the selected display’s current resolution and refresh rate so you can confirm the result. [Microsoft]
Connect the monitor and choose its input
-
Connect the monitor to a video output supported by both the monitor and your PC. HDMI and DisplayPort are common options, but the supported modes depend on the exact devices and connection. [MSI]
-
Connect monitor power and turn it on.
-
If the monitor does not show the PC’s picture, open its on-screen display (OSD) and select the input that matches the connected cable. OSD names and options differ by model, so consult the monitor’s manual for the exact menu path. [MSI]

If you have multiple screens, use the display selector to choose the monitor you want to configure. Check the display identity before changing its refresh rate. Windows also offers projection choices such as Extend; choose the arrangement that matches how you use the screens. [Microsoft] [Microsoft]
-
Open the refresh-rate menu and select 100 Hz if it appears. Windows lists rates supported by the display. If a rate has an asterisk, Microsoft says it does not support the current resolution; selecting it changes the resolution to achieve that rate. Check the resolution again after applying a change. Verify the refresh rate and resolution
Stay on the selected monitor’s Advanced display page and check its display information. Confirm that it identifies the intended monitor, reports 100 Hz, and shows the resolution you want. Microsoft defines refresh rate as “the number of times per second that the image refreshes on the screen.” [Microsoft]
You can also check the monitor’s OSD if its manual describes an information screen. For example, the ViewSonic VG2409U-2 manual includes an Information OSD option, but that does not mean every monitor displays refresh rate in its OSD. [ViewSonic VG2409U-2 manual]

If 100 Hz is missing or the screen does not work
A missing 100 Hz option does not by itself prove that the monitor is defective. Windows’ available modes depend on the display’s capabilities, and the resolution can affect which rates are offered. Check the exact monitor manual for supported resolution-and-refresh-rate combinations and any input limitations; also confirm that the OSD is set to the connected input. [Microsoft] [MSI]
-
Check the connection: Make sure the cable is seated securely. Try a different cable or another available video output, and test the monitor on another system if possible. These are Microsoft troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee that a particular change will enable 100 Hz. [Microsoft]

Check the exact model’s specifications: The ViewSonic VG2409U-2 manual, for example, lists a 48–100 Hz vertical frequency range over HDMI and DisplayPort. That specification applies to this model; it is not a universal guarantee for other monitors, PCs, resolutions, or cables. [ViewSonic VG2409U-2 manual]

Check before buying a cable: Look at what was supplied with the monitor and what both devices’ manuals require. Lenovo’s L27qe-40 product listing describes a 100 Hz monitor and includes an HDMI 2.0 cable, so a separate DisplayPort cable is not automatically required. Consider another cable only if the existing one is missing, faulty, unsuitable for the desired mode, or the device documentation calls for it. [Lenovo] [Microsoft]
Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate is different
Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) is not the control for selecting 100 Hz on a 100 Hz-only monitor. Microsoft says DRR requires a display that supports variable refresh rate (VRR) and a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz. For a 100 Hz monitor, use the standard refresh-rate menu described above. [Microsoft]
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft’s refresh-rate instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. However, Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says the operating system may continue to function, but it no longer receives the standard free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. [Microsoft]
