Set tracking force from the cartridge or stylus manufacturer’s specification, not from the turntable model alone. First balance the tonearm with anti-skate at zero, zero the counterweight scale, then dial in the specified force. Confirm the result with a calibrated stylus-force gauge placed on the platter at record height. Set anti-skate to the same number only when your turntable manual uses that matching-value method; the cartridge and tonearm instructions take priority.

Correct setup keeps the stylus seated in the groove, reduces mistracking and uneven record wear, and lets the cartridge perform as designed. The procedures below work for a conventional pivoted tonearm with a rear counterweight, while the notes on anti-skate explain why some models require a different adjustment.

What tracking force and anti-skate do

Tracking force is the stylus pressure

Tracking force is the downward force applied by the stylus to the record groove. It is specified by the cartridge or replacement stylus manufacturer, usually as a recommended value or range. A turntable does not have one universal tracking-force setting: changing the cartridge, stylus assembly, headshell or counterweight changes the correct target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Too little force can let the stylus lose contact with the groove during loud or complex passages. That condition, called mistracking, can sound distorted and can damage groove walls. Too much force can increase wear on the stylus and records and may alter the intended compliance of the cartridge. Cambridge Audio states in the Alva TT V2 manual: “Ensuring that the tracking force is set correctly is important to the performance of your turntable and helps to minimise damage to your records.”

Anti-skate offsets the inward pull

As a record plays, the stylus and groove create an inward skating force that pulls the tonearm toward the record center. Audio-Technica explains that anti-skate applies an opposing force. The control may be a dial, a spring mechanism, a hanging thread and weight, or another model-specific arrangement. Its job is not to add tracking force; it changes the sideways balance of the arm.

Unequal lateral force can make one channel mistrack before the other and can increase uneven stylus or groove wear. Anti-skate therefore has to be adjusted after tracking force, with the arm otherwise correctly balanced.

Find the correct tracking-force target first

Use the installed stylus specification

Look for the cartridge model printed on the cartridge body, the stylus assembly, the headshell documentation, or the turntable’s included-cartridge paperwork. Use the manufacturer’s recommended value or range for that exact cartridge or stylus. If a replacement stylus has its own specification, use the replacement’s specification rather than assuming the original value still applies.

If the documentation provides a range, choose a value within that range according to the manufacturer’s guidance. Do not substitute a generic figure because two cartridges look similar or because a previous cartridge used a different force.

When the cartridge identity is unclear

Do not guess a safe force from the turntable name. Identify the cartridge or stylus before playing records. If the model cannot be identified, obtain the cartridge documentation or replace it with a model whose specifications are available. A force gauge can measure what the arm is applying, but it cannot tell you what force an unidentified stylus is designed to withstand.

Prepare the turntable and tonearm

Make these checks before balancing the arm:

  • Place the turntable on a stable, level surface and keep it stationary while adjusting.
  • Fit the stylus guard before handling the cartridge or moving the arm near the platter.
  • Install the cartridge, headshell and counterweight as instructed for your model. Tighten fittings normally; do not add accessories after calibration without recalibrating.
  • Set the anti-skate control to zero or its minimum position. A hanging-weight system should be placed in its zero or no-force position according to its instructions.
  • Make sure the tonearm is released from its rest and that the cueing lever allows the arm to move freely when you balance it.

Keep fingers away from the cantilever and stylus tip. The stylus guard protects the tip while you work, but it must be removed only when the arm is ready to measure or play.

Balance the tonearm and zero the scale

Balancing establishes the arm’s mechanical reference. The numbered ring on a counterweight is not a measurement until this reference has been set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. With anti-skate at zero, release the arm from its rest. Keep the stylus guard fitted.
  2. Move the rear counterweight forward or backward until the arm floats level: neither the cartridge end nor the counterweight end should rise or fall. Use the cueing lever or your hand carefully so the stylus cannot touch the platter.
  3. Once the arm is floating level, hold the counterweight so it cannot turn and rotate only the numbered tracking-force ring to 0. The counterweight itself must not move during this step.
  4. Confirm that the arm still floats level. If it does not, rebalance it and zero the ring again.

Skipping the zeroing step makes every subsequent dial reading offset. Rebalance whenever the cartridge, headshell, counterweight or tonearm configuration changes.

Dial in and measure tracking force

Set the counterweight to the target

After the arm is balanced and the ring reads zero, rotate the counterweight (or the combined counterweight and ring, as your design requires) until the ring points to the cartridge manufacturer’s target. Turn slowly and avoid pushing down on the arm.

This dial is a calibrated reference, not proof that the stylus is applying the exact force. Manufacturing tolerances, friction and the position of the arm can make the actual value differ from the scale.

Verify with a stylus-force gauge

A calibrated digital or mechanical stylus-force gauge is the most useful accessory for checking the real force. Use it as follows:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Place the gauge on the platter so its weighing surface is approximately the same height as a record’s playing surface. A large height difference changes the tonearm angle and can change the reading.
  2. Turn the gauge on or zero it according to its instructions. Keep the platter and gauge stable.
  3. Remove the stylus guard only when the arm is positioned safely above the gauge. Lower the stylus onto the gauge’s specified contact point using the cueing lever; do not drop it.
  4. Read the displayed force and compare it with the cartridge target. Rotate the counterweight in small increments until the measured value reaches the target or a value within the manufacturer’s stated range.
  5. Raise the arm, replace the stylus guard and repeat the measurement if you made a substantial adjustment. A repeatable reading is more useful than a single number obtained while the arm or gauge is moving.

Measure at record height, not directly on the bare platter, unless your gauge instructions explicitly account for that difference. The gauge verifies downward force; it does not set anti-skate.

Set anti-skate after tracking force

The matching-value starting method

Return the arm to its rest before changing the anti-skate control. On turntables whose manuals use the matching-value method, set anti-skate to the same number as the measured tracking force. Cambridge Audio recommends matching the anti-skating dial to cartridge tracking force on its Alva models. For example, an Alva setup may show a dial value of 2; that number is a model-specific instruction, not a general setting for every cartridge or turntable.

A matching setting is a starting point, not a law. Use the measured tracking force as the reference number only when the turntable manual’s scale is designed to correspond to it.

Fixed, dial and hanging-weight mechanisms

Some arms have a numbered dial, while others use a thread and hanging weight or a model-specific mechanism. The physical adjustment differs, but the order remains the same: establish the cartridge force first, then apply the anti-skate setting specified for that arm. A hanging weight may require placing the thread in a particular notch; do not convert its position into a dial number unless the manufacturer provides that conversion.

Why the optimum may not equal tracking force

The inward skating force changes with the stylus profile, tonearm geometry, groove location and the audio signal cut into the groove. McIntosh states in the MT5 manual: “The correct amount of Tracking Force and Anti-Skate varies with the exact shape of the Stylus Tip and finally the audio signal (both frequency and amplitude) contained in the groove wall of the record.”

Consequently, follow a cartridge or tonearm manual that specifies a different anti-skate value or a particular test procedure. Do not override a model-specific instruction merely to make the two numbers match.

Manufacturer specification versus generic rules

Adjustment question Manufacturer-specific approach Generic starting approach
Tracking-force target Use the exact cartridge or stylus recommendation or range. Do not infer a value from the turntable or another cartridge.
Counterweight reading Zero the ring after balancing, then dial in the target. Use the dial as a starting reference, not as a substitute for measurement.
Actual force Confirm with a calibrated gauge at record height. Relying only on the dial can leave an unverified offset.
Anti-skate Follow the tonearm or turntable’s specified dial, weight position or test. Matching anti-skate to tracking force is a common initial setting only.

The cartridge manual has priority over a one-to-one recommendation. If the cartridge and turntable documentation appear to conflict, check that you have identified the correct stylus and the correct tonearm model before adjusting.

Recheck after any hardware or position change

Repeat the gauge measurement whenever you change the cartridge, stylus, headshell, counterweight or turntable position. Even removing and reinstalling a headshell can alter the balance. A turntable moved to a different surface may no longer be level, affecting both the floating-arm balance and the gauge reading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After rebalancing, reset anti-skate because its previous value was based on the earlier tracking-force setup. Keep the arm level during balancing and keep the turntable stable while measuring.

Symptoms that call for a setup check

These signs do not identify one guaranteed cause, but they justify stopping playback and checking the setup in the order below:

  • Audible mistracking, fuzziness or breakup on loud passages: verify the cartridge target, rebalance the arm, measure with a gauge, and then check anti-skate. Too little tracking force is one possible cause; do not simply increase force beyond the specified range.
  • The stylus appears to move toward the record center: confirm that the arm is level and that anti-skate has not been left at zero after force adjustment. Use the manufacturer’s anti-skate procedure rather than guessing a larger number.
  • One channel sounds worse than the other: inspect cartridge alignment and connections as well as anti-skate. Lateral imbalance can contribute, but anti-skate is not a cure for a loose connection or damaged stylus.
  • The dial setting and gauge disagree: trust the calibrated gauge for the actual force, provided it is on a stable surface at record height. Recheck that the counterweight ring was zeroed while the arm floated level.
  • Readings change between attempts: check that the gauge is zeroed, the cueing mechanism is fully lowered, the platter is stable and the stylus contacts the gauge at the same point each time.

When a stylus-force gauge is worth buying

You can perform the basic balance-and-dial procedure without a gauge, but the dial alone does not verify the force at the stylus. A gauge is especially valuable when installing a new cartridge, using a replacement stylus, setting an unfamiliar tonearm, or troubleshooting mistracking. Choose a calibrated instrument that can measure the low force used by phono cartridges and follow its zeroing and placement instructions.

Use the gauge for verification, not to select a force for an unidentified cartridge. The safe target still comes from the cartridge or stylus manufacturer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable setup routine

  1. Identify the installed cartridge or stylus and record its recommended tracking-force value or range.
  2. Fit the stylus guard, place the turntable level and set anti-skate to zero or minimum.
  3. Balance the released tonearm so it floats level.
  4. Without moving the counterweight, set the numbered ring to zero.
  5. Dial in the manufacturer’s target, then measure at record height with a calibrated gauge.
  6. Adjust the counterweight until the gauge reaches the target or an allowed value in the specified range.
  7. Return the arm to its rest and set anti-skate using the tonearm manual. Use a matching value only where that method is prescribed.
  8. Replace the stylus guard and recheck the force after any later hardware or position change.

This sequence separates the three jobs that are often confused: balancing the arm, setting downward force and countering skating force. Keeping them separate prevents an anti-skate adjustment from masking an incorrect tracking-force setup.
