A price alert notifies you when a stock reaches a condition you choose; it does not place a trade. A stop-loss is a sell order that can be submitted through your brokerage’s order ticket. Before submitting one, distinguish a standard stop—which becomes a market order when triggered—from a stop-limit, which becomes a limit order and may not execute.

Set a price alert

Most brokerage apps let you create an alert from a stock’s page, but the exact controls and notification options vary. Use this general workflow, then confirm the alert is active in the app:

  1. Find the stock by name or ticker and open its page.
  2. Open the price-alert or notification controls.
  3. Choose a condition, such as the price rising above or falling below a threshold, and enter the price.
  4. If offered, choose recurrence and notification options, then save.
  5. Check the app’s alert list or the confirmation message to verify that the alert is active.

An alert requires you to decide what to do after it fires. It does not automatically buy or sell the stock.

Examples from two brokerages

Robinhood says custom price alerts can be configured from a stock, ETF, or crypto chart in its app or on web classic. Trading 212 documents custom and default alerts, with a recurring option available during setup. These are provider-specific examples, not universal instructions; screens and features may change. Place a stop-based sell order

For an existing long position, a stop-loss generally means submitting a sell stop or sell stop-limit order. The following is a general workflow, not a tested sequence for any particular app; field names, available order types, and rules differ by brokerage.

  1. Open the relevant position and choose the app’s trade or order action.
  2. Confirm the security, choose sell, and enter the quantity.
  3. Select a supported stop order type and enter its stop trigger price. For a stop-limit, enter the separate limit price too.
  4. Review the time in force, eligible trading sessions, order details, and any disclosure shown on the ticket.
  5. Submit only after checking the terms, then verify the order appears with the intended status.

Brokerages are not required to accept stop or stop-limit orders, and order availability and trigger conventions can vary. Check your firm’s current order ticket and disclosures before relying on a particular setup. FINRA explains order types at Order Types and the relevant requirements in Rule 5350.

Know what happens when each choice triggers

Choice What happens at the trigger Main trade-off
Price alert The app sends a notification when its configured condition is met; it does not submit an order. You choose what to do next. Alert conditions, recurrence, and delivery options depend on the provider.
Standard stop order Under FINRA’s standard definition, reaching the stop condition turns the order into a market order. It prioritizes an attempt to execute, but the sale price can differ from the stop price, particularly in a fast market.
Stop-limit order Reaching the stop condition turns the order into a limit order. It sets a price boundary, but the order may remain unfilled if the market moves past the limit.
Trailing stop The stop level follows the market by a specified dollar or percentage amount, according to the order’s rules. The firm’s calculation and conditions determine how it behaves; confirm those details before placing the order.

FINRA and the SEC describe these mechanics in FINRA’s order-types guide and the SEC Investor Bulletin on stop, stop-limit, and trailing stop orders.

Understand the risks before choosing a stop

A stop price is a trigger, not a guaranteed sale price

When a standard stop triggers and becomes a market order, the next available execution price may be materially different from the stop price. FINRA’s March 26, 2025 example describes a sell stop at $50 that may sell for less than $50 if the market moves quickly. The figure illustrates how an order can behave; it is not a recommended stop level. See FINRA’s explanation of stop orders in volatile markets.

A stop-limit may not sell

A stop-limit adds a limit price, which sets the least favorable price at which you are willing to sell under the order’s terms. If the market moves below that limit, the order can remain unfilled. The price boundary therefore comes with the possibility that you keep holding the shares.

Volatility can trigger an unwanted sale

A brief, sharp price move can trigger a stop even if the stock later recovers. FINRA discusses this risk in Regulatory Notice 16-19. Consider how the order’s trigger convention and eligible trading sessions work at your brokerage; firms may use different conventions, and FINRA Rule 5350 requires firms using an alternative trigger order to distinguish and explain it before entry.
