To set a stop-loss in a stock trading app, open the stock’s order ticket, verify the symbol and position, choose a supported sell-stop or stop-limit order, enter its trigger price, review the order conditions, and confirm that the app accepted it. A price alert is different: it notifies you when a threshold is reached but does not, by itself, place a trade. Exact menus, order availability, trigger rules, and alert behavior vary by brokerage, so check your app’s current order ticket and official help pages before submitting anything.

How to set a stop-loss order in a trading app

The steps below are general checks, not guaranteed button names or features. Brokerages can differ in the order types they accept and in how they trigger them; FINRA advises investors to ask their firm about available order types and execution procedures (FINRA: Order Types; FINRA Rule 5350).

  1. Open the holding or trade ticket. Confirm the stock symbol, share quantity, and position direction. For shares you own, you are generally considering a sell order; managing a short position involves a different side of the trade.
  2. Choose the order type deliberately. For an owned long position, a sell stop is generally placed below the current market price. A stop order becomes a market order when triggered. A stop-limit order becomes a limit order instead. The brokerage may not offer every type.
  3. Enter the trigger price and, if applicable, the limit price. The stop price is the trigger, not a guaranteed sale price. A stop-limit order has a separate limit that sets the lowest acceptable sale price; if the market moves below it, the order may not fill.
  4. Review the order conditions. Check the order’s duration or time-in-force, eligible trading hours, trigger method, quantity, and summary. These settings and rules depend on the brokerage; consult its official instructions, especially if you do not understand how an order can trigger outside regular hours.
  5. Verify before submitting. Check the side, quantity, order type, stop price, limit price if any, and duration. After submission, make sure the order appears as open or accepted. If it is rejected or unavailable, do not assume the position is protected.
  6. Set an alert separately if you want a notification. Use the app’s price-alert feature if available, and check its help page for how to set the threshold, enable notifications, and determine whether the alert expires. An alert is not a substitute for an order.

Stop-loss vs. stop-limit: which should you use?

The central trade-off is execution likelihood versus control over price. FINRA explains that a stop order becomes a market order after its trigger, while a stop-limit order becomes a limit order (FINRA: Order Types). Neither type guarantees both an execution and a particular price.

Order type What happens at the trigger Main trade-off
Stop order Becomes a market order. Prioritizes submitting an order for execution, but the fill can be significantly different from the stop price in a fast-moving market. FINRA, March 26, 2025
Stop-limit order Becomes a limit order at the specified limit price. Sets a price boundary, but can remain unfilled if the market moves through that price. SEC Investor.gov, updated August 18, 2026

A trailing stop is another variant offered by some brokerages: its stop level follows the market by a specified dollar amount or percentage under that firm’s terms. It is not available in every app, so check the broker’s description before choosing it (SEC Investor.gov).

How to choose a stop-loss level

There is no universally suitable stop price or percentage. For an owned long position, a sell-stop trigger is generally below the current market; for a short position, a buy stop is generally above it. Those mechanics do not determine what level is appropriate for your circumstances. Choose a level as part of your own plan and risk assessment, then check the order’s actual terms with your brokerage. The cited guidance explains order mechanics and risks, not an optimal level for a particular stock or investor (FINRA; SEC Investor.gov).

What a stop order can—and cannot—protect against

  • The stop price is a trigger, not a promised sale price. FINRA states: “A stop order becomes a market order once the stop price is reached.” In a fast market, execution may be substantially away from the trigger (FINRA, March 26, 2025).
  • A brief sharp move can trigger an order. A security may rebound afterward, but a trade that has executed cannot simply be undone. Consider this risk when deciding whether and where to place an order (FINRA, March 26, 2025; FINRA Regulatory Notice 16-19, May 26, 2016).
  • A stop-limit order may not execute. Its limit constrains the acceptable price, not whether a buyer will be available at that price (FINRA, March 26, 2025).
  • Broker rules matter. Firms may differ in supported order types and trigger conditions; FINRA Rule 5350 addresses stop-order definitions and firm disclosures about trigger events. Review the terms for your own account and app (FINRA Rule 5350).

How a stock price alert differs from a stop-loss

A price alert is intended to notify you when a chosen price condition is met. A stop order is an instruction that can lead to a trade after its trigger. Do not assume that creating an alert also creates an order, or that placing an order will send the notification you want. Because alert setup and delivery are app-specific, check the brokerage’s current help page for its threshold, notification, and expiration behavior.
