You can set a stock price alert from a security’s quote page in most investing apps: choose the alert control, enter a target price, and save. Then confirm that notifications are enabled. An alert tells you a chosen condition occurred; it does not explain the move or tell you whether to trade. The steps below use U.S.-market examples, and menus or feature availability may change.
Set a stock price alert in your investing app
The basic workflow is similar across services, but the menu names and alert choices differ. Follow the instructions for your platform, then check both the alert itself and its notification settings.
Yahoo Finance for Android
- Look up the stock and open its quote page.
- On the Summary tab, tap Alerts, then Create new price alert.
- Enter the target price and tap Done. Yahoo says it sends a push notification when the target is met. Yahoo’s Android alert instructions
- Check the app’s notification preferences and your device settings to make sure push notifications are allowed. Yahoo’s notification guidance
Yahoo Finance for iOS
- Look up the stock’s quote page and tap Alerts.
- Enter a target price and create the alert.
- To change an alert, open Alerts again. To remove one, swipe left on it and choose Delete.
- To manage push notifications, open Menu, then Settings | Notifications, and toggle the alerts you want. Yahoo’s notification instructions
Schwab Mobile
- From Markets, search for and select the security.
- Choose Set an Alert, then Target price.
- Select the price type and direction, enter the target, and save. The same alert screen can also be used for news and events, including earnings releases.
- To manage alerts, open Profile > Stock Alerts. Open alerts can be edited; triggered alerts appear on a separate tab. Schwab says successfully triggered alerts are retained for up to 30 days. Schwab’s stock-alert instructions
Schwab Mobile alerts do not synchronize with thinkorswim or Schwab.com, so check the product where you created an alert. Schwab’s stock-alert instructions
Choose a trigger and delivery method that fit your needs
A target price is only one kind of alert. The available choices depend on the service and may depend on account or app settings.

Common alert conditions
- Target price: Notify when a stock reaches a specified price; some services let you choose whether it is moving up or down through that level.
- Percentage change: Notify when a stock moves by a specified percentage relative to the previous close.
- Technical level: Fidelity lists alerts for a crossing of an exponential moving average (EMA) and for a 52-week high or low. Its article describes 20-, 50-, and 200-day EMAs; an EMA gives more weight to recent prices. These are possible monitoring signals, not certain forecasts. - News or events: Schwab Mobile supports news and event alerts, including earnings releases. Schwab’s stock-alert instructions
Compare the details before relying on an alert
- Trigger condition: Check whether the service supports a price, direction, percentage move, technical level, news item, or event you want to monitor.
- Delivery: Confirm whether the alert arrives by push notification, text, email, or in-app message, and what account or device permissions are needed. Fidelity says its mobile app supports push delivery and that price-trigger alerts may also be sent by text or email, depending on settings. Fidelity Viewpoints, “How alerts can help you trade and invest” (July 27, 2026)
- Alert lifecycle: Find out how to edit or delete an open alert and whether triggered alerts remain available for review.
- Cross-device behavior: Do not assume alerts sync across a broker’s apps and website; Schwab documents that its mobile alerts do not sync with thinkorswim or Schwab.com. Schwab’s stock-alert instructions
- Timing and quote basis: Check which quote or market session the condition uses and how alerts are delivered. The cited instructions do not establish a general real-time delivery guarantee, so do not assume one.
Fidelity says users can set alerts on its website, which may be easier when configuring alerts for multiple securities. Fidelity Viewpoints, “How alerts can help you trade and invest” (July 27, 2026)

A joint investor bulletin dated October 5, 2026, from the SEC, CFTC, FINRA, NASAA, NFA, and SIPC recommends preparing for market changes with a plan, adequate savings, diversification and asset allocation, and patient periodic investing. Diversification can reduce overall portfolio risk, but it cannot guarantee that investments will avoid losses during a market decline.
