Set a stock price alert in the brokerage or investing app you already use, then decide in advance what you will check when it arrives. An alert means a price condition was met; it does not explain why the price moved or tell you whether to trade.
What a stock price alert does—and does not do
A price alert is a notification tied to a condition you choose, such as a stock reaching a particular price. The exact alert options and notification controls vary by provider, so look for the feature in your own app rather than following generic instructions that may not match its current interface. The SEC and FINRA explain how alerts and online information can affect investors, but an alert itself is only a prompt to review information: SEC and FINRA guidance on social-media investment signals.
It is not a trade order, an explanation of the move, or evidence that buying or selling is appropriate. A market headline or social post may describe a short-term signal, and some online platforms can spread false or misleading claims. Verify claims against the original source and publicly disclosed company information before relying on them. The SEC’s investor alert discusses the risks of short-term trading in volatile markets and social-media-driven stock activity: SEC alert on hot stocks and short-term trading risks.

Set an alert in the app you already use
- Open the stock or your watchlist. In your existing brokerage or investing app, look for a price-alert or notification option on the stock’s page or in your watchlist. The exact screen and available controls depend on the provider.
- Choose a review-worthy threshold. Set a price condition that would prompt you to check what is happening, rather than treating every small move as a reason to monitor the market. There is no universal correct dollar or percentage threshold.
- Choose how you want to be notified. Use the notification choices the app offers. Their availability and labels are provider-specific.
- Decide what the alert will trigger. Before it arrives, make a short review plan: check the price context, find the source of the news, look for relevant company disclosures, and ask whether your original investment reasons or near-term cash needs have changed.
Use a review checklist before reacting to a headline
When a notification arrives, separate the fact that a price moved from the interpretation in a headline. Work through these questions before considering an investment decision:
#1 Best Overall
- Is the claim verifiable? Trace a headline or social-media post to its original source and compare it with publicly disclosed company information. A widely shared claim is not automatically reliable.
- Is the move company-specific or market-wide? A day’s drop may take time to interpret. Consider whether the change appears connected to the company, broader market conditions, or information that is still unclear.
- Has something relevant to your original reasoning changed? Distinguish a new, verified company fact from commentary about a short-term price move. The SEC and FINRA recommend reviewing disclosures and considering the risks of short-term social-media signals.
- Does your personal situation change the decision? Revisit your time horizon, financial plan, risk tolerance, diversification, and any near-term liquidity needs. Money you may need soon can affect the choices available to you.
- Would the contemplated action fit your plan? If no thesis-relevant information or personal need has changed, pause and compare the proposed action with your longer-term objectives. That does not mean inaction is always right; it means a headline alone is not a substitute for considering your circumstances.
FINRA’s guidance emphasizes goals and investment timeframe when markets are volatile. Gerri Walsh, FINRA’s Senior Vice President of Investor Education, put the temptation to react this way: “One enduring truth about stock markets is that they go up, and they go down—and the steeper the rise or the fall, the more tempting it can be to derail a long-term strategy with a snap decision. Especially when markets fall sharply, we tend to react on impulse. Before that becomes your reaction to market volatility, focus first on your goals and your investment timeframe.” FINRA guidance on checking emotions during market volatility.

In volatile markets, displayed quotes may lag price movements, and execution can be delayed or differ from what you saw on screen. A price notification does not reserve a price or place an order. If you consider trading, understand the order type and its limits first.

- As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
- You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
- To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.
A limit order sets a maximum price for a buy or a minimum price for a sell, but it may not execute if the market does not meet that limit. It can constrain the execution price without guaranteeing a completed trade. See Vanguard’s explanation of trading during volatile markets and the SEC’s general online-trading guidance.
