In Puppeteer, screenshot resolution comes from three separate choices: the viewport’s width and height in CSS pixels, the deviceScaleFactor (pixel density), and the area you capture. Set the viewport before navigation, choose a scale factor such as 2 for a high-density image, then use fullPage or clip when you need more or less than the visible viewport. Image quality affects lossy JPEG/WebP encoding only; it does not change dimensions.
What “resolution” means in Puppeteer
Puppeteer exposes resolution through independent screenshot controls. Keeping them separate prevents the common mistake of treating a requested viewport as the final bitmap size.
| Control | What it changes | Typical value or behavior |
|---|---|---|
Viewport width and height |
Browser layout size in CSS pixels | 1280 × 720 |
deviceScaleFactor |
Device pixels rendered for each CSS pixel | Documented default is 1; 2 doubles each axis |
| Capture area | Which region is saved | Visible viewport, full page, or a clip rectangle |
Format and quality |
File encoding and, for lossy formats, compression | PNG by default; quality is 0–100 for JPEG/WebP |
For example, a 1280 × 720 CSS-pixel viewport with deviceScaleFactor: 2 produces a nominal 2560 × 1440 viewport bitmap. A full-page capture can be taller, and a clipped capture can be smaller, so inspect the actual file dimensions rather than inferring them from the viewport alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSet viewport dimensions and pixel density
Use page.setViewport() before loading the page whenever possible. Puppeteer documents viewport dimensions in CSS pixels and documents a default device scale factor of 1. A scale factor of 0 resets to the system default.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({
width: 1280,
height: 720,
deviceScaleFactor: 2,
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', {waitUntil: 'networkidle2'});
await page.screenshot({path: 'shot.png'});
await browser.close();
})();
The screenshot above captures the visible 1280 × 720 CSS-pixel viewport at twice the device density. PNG is the default type when no other type is selected (and Puppeteer can infer a type from a file extension).
Choose dimensions for the layout you need
- Use a desktop width such as 1280 or 1440 CSS pixels to test desktop breakpoints.
- Use the target phone or tablet CSS width when checking responsive behavior. The resulting physical bitmap depends on the scale factor.
- Set a height that represents the initial screen; it does not limit a later
fullPagecapture.
Changing isMobile or hasTouch while setting the viewport may resize or reload the page. Configure those properties before navigation when emulating a mobile device.
Understand deviceScaleFactor
deviceScaleFactor: 1 is the documented default. A value of 2 renders twice as many device pixels across and down (four times as many pixels in the bitmap), which is useful for retina-style assets but increases memory and file size. It does not alter CSS layout breakpoints: a 1280 CSS-pixel layout remains 1280 CSS pixels wide.

Viewport screenshot
Calling page.screenshot() without fullPage captures the current viewport. The output area therefore follows the viewport dimensions and scale factor.

await page.screenshot({path: 'viewport.webp', type: 'webp', quality: 85});
Full-page screenshot
Set fullPage: true to capture the document’s full scrollable page instead of only the visible viewport.
await page.screenshot({
path: 'full.png',
fullPage: true,
});
Full-page height is determined by the rendered document. Lazy-loaded content, sticky elements, animations, and pages that continuously append content can affect the result. Wait for the content your page requires before capturing.
Capture a specific rectangle
Use clip to select a region in CSS-pixel coordinates. Keep this capture rectangle conceptually separate from viewport configuration.
await page.screenshot({
path: 'region.png',
clip: {x: 40, y: 120, width: 800, height: 500},
captureBeyondViewport: true,
});
captureBeyondViewport controls whether Puppeteer may capture outside the current viewport. Its documented default is false when there is no clip and true when a clip is supplied. Set it explicitly when reproducibility matters.
Format and quality: dimensions are not compression
PNG preserves lossless detail and ignores the quality option. JPEG and WebP are lossy formats; their optional quality value ranges from 0 to 100. Higher quality generally means a larger file, but it does not change the requested viewport or clip dimensions.

await page.screenshot({

});
Use PNG for pixel-accurate UI comparisons or text-heavy images. Use JPEG or WebP when transfer size matters and small compression differences are acceptable. If you specify a type, make the file extension agree with it so downstream tooling does not misinterpret the file.
A complete, deterministic capture script
This example sets the viewport first, waits for navigation, disables animation for a stable frame, and captures both a viewport image and a full-page image.

cURL
Puppeteer itself is a Node.js library. If you need a one-request screenshot service rather than managing a browser, use the ScreenshotNeo endpoint shown below.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options and response headers.
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js fetch
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or a PDF, while options cover full-page capture, element selectors, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, waits, custom CSS and JavaScript, cookies and headers, geolocation, blocking, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, and bulk capture.
Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Plans include 1,000 shots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. The same features are available on every plan. Start at the free ScreenshotNeo sign-up.

Troubleshooting resolution problems
The file is smaller than expected
- Check whether you captured a clip or used
fullPage; those change the area independently of the viewport. - Confirm
deviceScaleFactorwas set on the page that took the screenshot, before navigation. - Inspect the output with an image tool; CSS dimensions are not guaranteed to equal bitmap dimensions.
Mobile styles did not apply
Set the viewport, isMobile, and hasTouch before page.goto(). Puppeteer may reload when mobile or touch settings change, so configuring them after navigation can produce a different document state.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Full-page output is cut off or missing content
- Wait for a page-specific ready selector instead of relying only on a short delay.
- Trigger or wait for lazy-loaded sections before calling
fullPage. - Disable animations and investigate elements that continuously change document height.
quality appears to do nothing
Quality does not apply to PNG. Select JPEG or WebP and set a value from 0 to 100 if you need lossy compression control.
The page times out or screenshots a blank page
Increase the navigation timeout only when the target legitimately needs more time, and wait for a concrete selector. Check the URL, authentication, blocked resources, and server-side bot protection. A screenshot cannot include content that the browser never successfully loaded.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Higher scale factors multiply pixel count and can increase memory use, encoding time, and file size. Use the lowest factor that meets your visual requirement.
- Full-page captures can be substantially larger and slower than viewport captures. Clip only the component needed for regression tests or documentation.
- PNG is convenient for deterministic comparisons but usually larger than lossy formats. Choose WebP or JPEG when delivery size is the priority.
- Set explicit viewport, scale, format, waits, and timeouts in automated jobs so a machine’s defaults do not change the output.
- For Puppeteer version 25.12.0 documentation, verify the API against the version installed in your project before relying on version-specific behavior; the documentation pages do not provide a publication date.
Resolution decision checklist
- Decide whether the test represents a viewport, the full document, or one element/rectangle.
- Choose CSS width and height for the responsive layout under test.
- Set
deviceScaleFactorfor the desired pixel density. - Set the viewport before navigation, especially when using mobile emulation.
- Wait for the required content and freeze animations when visual consistency matters.
- Choose PNG for lossless comparison or JPEG/WebP plus
qualityfor smaller files. - Validate the actual bitmap dimensions and file size in your pipeline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does deviceScaleFactor change CSS media-query breakpoints?
No. It changes device-pixel density; the CSS viewport width and height remain the values supplied to setViewport.
Can I use quality with PNG screenshots?
No. Puppeteer’s quality option applies to lossy JPEG and WebP encoding, not PNG.
What should I verify when upgrading Puppeteer?
Check the ScreenshotOptions, Viewport, and screenshot documentation for the exact version installed, because defaults and mobile-emulation behavior can be version-specific.
