Use the method that matches the run type: an attended desktop flow can use the Workstation Set screen resolution action, while an unattended flow should use the desktop flow’s Display resolution for unattended runs property or the documented Windows registry settings. The attended action does not change resolution in certain remote unattended sessions where the user cannot manually change display settings.

Choose the correct Power Automate Desktop method

Method Applies to Scope Main limitation
Workstation Set screen resolution action Attended desktop flows Selected monitor while the flow runs Needs monitor, width, height, bit count and frequency; ineffective in documented remote sessions where resolution cannot be changed manually
Display resolution for unattended runs flow property Unattended runs One desktop flow and its child flows Overrides registry values
Windows Registry Unattended runs Machine-wide default Flow properties take precedence; 64-bit keys can override 32-bit keys
UIFlowService.exe.config Older unattended setups Service configuration Deprecated and can be overwritten by upgrades

Set resolution in an attended desktop flow

1. Read the current settings (optional but recommended)

Add the Workstation Get screen resolution action before changing anything. Record the monitor number, width, height, bit count and frequency in variables. This lets you restore the user’s original display later.

2. Check supported resolutions

Use Available screen resolutions to inspect values supported by each monitor. Select a combination actually returned for the target monitor instead of assuming that a common value such as 1920 × 1080 is available.

3. Add Set screen resolution

  1. Open the desktop flow in Power Automate Desktop.
  2. In Actions, expand Workstation and add Set screen resolution.
  3. Select the monitor number.
  4. Enter the desired width and height in pixels.
  5. Enter the display bit count and frequency required by that monitor.
  6. Run the flow and verify that the application window and any target controls are visible.

The action changes the selected monitor for the attended session. If the flow is cloud-triggered, Microsoft requires a console-session connection in which the user can manually change resolution. In remote sessions, including documented unattended scenarios using remote desktop clients, the action has no effect when manual resolution changes are unavailable.

  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

4. Restore the original resolution

Place a second Set screen resolution action in a cleanup branch or at the end of the flow, using the values captured by Get screen resolution. A cleanup branch is important when the main automation fails, because leaving a user’s display at an unexpected size can disrupt subsequent work.

Set resolution for an unattended desktop flow

For unattended execution, configure the flow rather than trying to change the display interactively during the run.

  1. Open the desktop flow’s details.
  2. Select Edit.
  3. Open Flow properties.
  4. Turn on Display resolution for unattended runs.
  5. Choose a listed resolution or enter a custom resolution.
  6. Save the flow and run it on the target machine.

Microsoft recommends using the resolution of the machine on which the flow was developed. The selected flow setting takes precedence over registry settings. If the parent flow calls child desktop flows, the parent’s resolution applies to those child flows as well. The setting also applies when an unattended Windows session is reused.

Per-flow resolution and DPI availability

Microsoft’s release plan lists general availability for per-flow unattended resolution and DPI settings on June 16, 2025. Availability can still depend on your Power Automate environment and rollout status, so check whether the property appears in your flow editor before changing machine-wide configuration.

Configure a machine-wide unattended default in the registry

Microsoft documents the registry approach for unattended flows beginning with Power Automate flows version 2.35. Use Registry Editor carefully, back up the relevant keys first, and make changes with an account permitted to edit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

Documented 32-bit registry path

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWOW6432NodeMicrosoftPower Automate DesktopGlobalScreen

Values to create or edit

DWORD value Purpose Example
ScreenResolutionEnabled Enables custom screen settings 1
Width Screen width in pixels 1920
Height Screen height in pixels 1080
Scale Display scale percentage 100

Enter these DWORD values using Decimal base. The 1920 × 1080 and 100% values are Microsoft documentation examples, not universal requirements. Use dimensions and scale that match the machine and the application being automated.

Check both registry views

The installer writes the documented settings in the 32-bit path. If corresponding keys exist at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftPower Automate DesktopGlobalScreen, Microsoft says the 64-bit path takes precedence. When the setting appears ineffective, inspect both locations and remove or correct conflicting duplicate values. A per-flow resolution still overrides either registry location.

Apply and verify the change

  1. Close Registry Editor after saving the values.
  2. Restart the relevant unattended session or service if your deployment process requires it.
  3. Run a test flow that records screen dimensions and captures a failure screenshot if available.
  4. Confirm both resolution and scale, not just width and height.

Why matching resolution and scale matters

Image recognition and coordinate-based automation depend on what the target machine actually renders. Microsoft recommends matching the source screen’s exact resolution and the same DPI scaling when using image recognition. A flow developed at one size can miss controls, crop a window, or fail to recognize an image when unattended execution uses another size or scale.

  • Resolution: changes the number of pixels available and can move or resize controls.
  • Scale/DPI: changes the effective size of text and interface elements even when pixel dimensions are unchanged.
  • Window state: maximized, restored and full-screen windows can expose different controls.
  • Application DPI awareness: applications that handle DPI differently can render selectors and images at unexpected sizes.

When a flow must temporarily change the display, capture the original resolution and scale first, then restore them in cleanup logic.

Troubleshoot resolution and unattended-flow failures

The Set screen resolution action does nothing

Check whether the flow is running in a remote or unattended session. The attended action cannot help when the session prevents users from changing resolution manually. Configure the unattended flow property or registry instead, and verify that the session is connected in the way required by your deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The flow property is missing

Confirm that you are editing the desktop flow’s details and opened Flow properties, rather than only the action designer. The per-flow feature was listed for general availability on June 16, 2025; tenant rollout or product availability may affect what appears in your environment.

The registry values are ignored

  • Confirm ScreenResolutionEnabled is the decimal DWORD value 1.
  • Check spelling, capitalization and the exact 32-bit path.
  • Inspect the 64-bit path for duplicate keys, because it can take precedence.
  • Check whether a flow property is overriding the machine default.
  • Restart the unattended session and test again.
  • Verify that the installed Power Automate flows version meets the documented 2.35 threshold.

Image recognition fails only unattended

Compare attended and unattended screenshots, resolution, scale, application DPI awareness and window state. Re-capture reference images at the target machine’s exact resolution and DPI. Check available failure screenshots and environment differences before changing selectors.

Child flows use an unexpected resolution

Inspect the parent flow. The parent’s selected unattended resolution applies to child desktop flows, so changing a child alone will not override the parent setting.

An upgrade reverted the configuration

If you edited UIFlowService.exe.config, that is expected behavior: Microsoft marks the configuration-file method deprecated and warns that upgrades can overwrite it with defaults. Move the configuration to the flow property or supported registry settings.

Performance, reliability and operational practices

  • Develop and test at the same resolution and scale used by unattended machines.
  • Prefer stable UI selectors over fixed coordinates where possible.
  • Use Get screen resolution as a diagnostic step in test flows.
  • Keep a known-good registry export before machine-wide edits.
  • Use one authoritative configuration: a flow property for a specific flow, or registry defaults for machines without a per-flow override.
  • Test every monitor involved; monitor numbering can differ between machines.
  • Capture screenshots on failure so you can compare the rendered unattended desktop with the development desktop.
