To make searches from your browser’s address bar use Google, change that browser’s default search engine in its settings. On a computer, Chrome’s path is More (three dots) > Settings > Search engine; choose Google, using Change first if that control appears. The steps below start with desktop Chrome, then cover common phone and browser alternatives.
Change Chrome’s default search engine on a computer
- Open Google Chrome.
- Select More (the three-dot menu) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Select Search engine. If the page shows a Change control, select it.
- Select Google as the default search engine.
Google’s instructions for making Google the default search engine and Chrome Help’s default-search guidance describe this settings route. Labels and available choices can differ by country or Chrome version.
Use Google in Chrome on a phone or tablet
Android
- Open Chrome and tap More.
- Tap Settings, then Search engine.
- Choose Google.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Chrome and tap More.
- Tap Settings, then Search engine.
- Choose Google.
These are Chrome settings; changing them does not change the search provider in another browser on the same device.
Change the search provider in other browsers
Safari on iPhone
Open the device’s Settings > Search > Search engine, then select Google. This changes Safari’s search provider, not Chrome’s. See Apple’s iPhone instructions.

Microsoft Edge
In Edge, open Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Address bar and search. In the Search engine used in address bar menu, choose Google. These labels follow Google’s browser-specific instructions; they may vary with the browser version.
Firefox for Android
Tap the search-engine icon in the address bar, open Search settings, tap Default search engine, and choose an available provider. Mozilla notes that engine availability can vary by region in its Firefox for Android help, last updated July 28, 2026.

Why Google may not appear as the same setting everywhere
Search-provider choices and setup can vary by country. Chrome may show a search-provider choice screen in some regions. Google describes provider-choice screens for Chrome on desktop and iOS in the European Economic Area, as well as a choice during Android setup; providers can vary by country. If you did not change the setting and searches start going to a different provider, Google says an unexpected search-engine change may indicate malware. That warning is a reason to investigate, not a diagnosis: selecting Google again does not establish or remove the cause. Follow current security and help guidance for your browser if the setting keeps reverting. Chrome Help’s guidance covers the warning.
