On a UK Gambling Commission-regulated betting site, sign in and look under Account, Safer gambling, Responsible gambling or Deposit limits to set a financial limit. To stop gambling across UK online operators, register with GAMSTOP; to exclude from one business, use that operator’s self-exclusion option. Menus vary by site, and these protections are barriers rather than a guarantee that every route to gambling is blocked.
How to set a financial limit on a betting site
UK-regulated remote gambling services must offer accessible account-level financial limits from registration. The controls must be easy to reach from the homepage and deposit pages. The exact menu labels and route differ by operator, so use the site’s own account or safer-gambling controls if the names below do not appear. [Gambling Commission RTS 12]
- Sign in to your betting account.
- Open Account, Safer gambling or Responsible gambling, or look for a link labelled Deposit limits.
- Choose the financial-limit control you want. Check what it measures before entering an amount.
- Enter an amount using the operator’s facility and select a period.
- Review the definition, period and effective time, then confirm the setting.
Use your account and transaction history, together with your personal budget, to decide on an amount. There is no suitable universal limit. UK operators must prompt active customers to review account and transaction information at least every six months and provide reminders. If you reach a limit, the system must prevent further deposits until the period restarts or an increase request completes its cooling-off process. [Gambling Commission RTS 12]
What each type of limit controls
“Financial limit” can mean several different things. A deposit limit is not interchangeable with a stake, loss or net-deposit limit. The UK Gambling Commission says that from 30 June 2026, only a limit based solely on what the customer pays into an account over a set duration may be called a deposit limit. #1 Best Overall
| Control | What it caps | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Gross deposit limit | Money paid into the account over a chosen period. | Whether it applies account-wide or only to a particular product, and which periods the operator offers. |
| Stake limit | The amount staked. | How the operator counts stakes and whether the control covers all products. |
| Loss limit | Stakes less winnings or returns, according to the operator’s calculation. | The calculation method and period; this is not the same as a cap on deposits. |
| Net-deposit limit | Deposits after withdrawals are taken into account. | How withdrawals and the selected period affect the total. |
For UK-regulated services, the required deposit-limit periods include 24 hours, seven days and one month. If you set limits for more than one period, the most restrictive applicable limit controls. For example, a £10 daily limit and a £100 weekly limit allow at most £10 per day and £70 over a seven-day period; this illustrates how overlapping limits work, not a recommended budget. What happens when you change a limit
Under UK rules, a customer-requested reduction must take effect immediately unless a technical failure prevents it. If a technical failure delays the change, the operator must tell you when it will take effect. An increase takes longer: you must request it, wait at least 24 hours, then take positive action to confirm after the cooling-off period. [Gambling Commission RTS 12]

How to self-exclude from online betting
Self-exclusion is a formal agreement not to gamble, intended for people who recognise gambling is causing harm and want help stopping. You can ask an individual gambling business to exclude you from its services, or use GAMSTOP ONLINE to request exclusion from UK online operators. The Commission’s GAMSTOP information says the available exclusion period is at least six months. [Gambling Commission: Self-exclusion] [Gambling Commission: GAMSTOP exclusion duration]

Find the operator’s self-exclusion arrangement in its account or safer-gambling controls and follow its registration steps. After an individual self-exclusion agreement, the business must close your account, return money it holds and remove your details from the marketing databases it uses. If the operator breaches the agreement, report it to the business and, if appropriate, the Gambling Commission. The Commission acknowledges that breaches can occur, so do not treat an account setting as an infallible block. [Gambling Commission: Self-exclusion]

Register with GAMSTOP for UK online operators
Use accurate personal details when registering, and update them after changes such as moving house, changing your surname or changing your email address. GAMSTOP matching depends on the details you supply. The Commission’s GAMSTOP information page, last updated in 2021, says participating businesses update their lists every 24 hours; that dated information should not be read as a promise of immediate blocking. [Gambling Commission: How GAMSTOP works]
Add barriers and get support
Account controls and self-exclusion can be paired with other forms of help. The Commission describes TalkBanStop as bringing together GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline, free Gamban blocking software and GAMSTOP self-exclusion. A blocker can add friction on devices, but it is not a substitute for self-exclusion or support, and no single measure guarantees every route is blocked. If gambling feels difficult to control or you need immediate support, the Commission lists the National Gambling Helpline as available 24 hours a day, seven days a week: 0808 8020 133 in England and Scotland, and 0808 2819 265 in Wales. Check the Commission’s current contact information before relying on these numbers. [Gambling Commission: Self-exclusion]

What these controls can and cannot do
These rules and services described here apply to UK Gambling Commission-regulated online gambling. Individual operator controls vary, and GAMSTOP is not a worldwide exclusion scheme. If you are outside the UK, check your local gambling regulator for the protections and services available in your jurisdiction. [Gambling Commission: Self-exclusion]

Adoption figures in the UK government’s 2023 Gambling White Paper are historical, not a current national prevalence survey: it reported that 11% of online gamblers used financial limits, while 5% used time-outs and 6% reality checks; Patterns of Play research found 21.5% of accounts had a deposit limit in the year studied, and an academic study reported 72.8% of deposit-limit users were satisfied with the tool. The figures have different denominators and should not be compared as if they measured the same population. The white paper also cautions that tools relying on personal responsibility may be insufficient for people experiencing addiction.
