For recurring preferences—such as wanting concise answers, clear steps, or less jargon—ChatGPT’s custom instructions are the best place to start. They let you set guidance for future conversations, so you do not have to restate the same preferences each time. They can make responses more consistent, but they are not a guarantee that every answer will be correct or follow every instruction.
Choose the setting that matches what you want to change
ChatGPT has several personalization controls. Use the one that fits the kind of change you want: explicit guidance belongs in custom instructions, useful context that may carry between chats belongs in Memory, and presentation preferences may fit response characteristics.
| Control | What it changes | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Custom instructions | Guidance about what ChatGPT should consider and how it should respond | Stable preferences you want to apply across future conversations |
| Memory | Relevant information or preferences ChatGPT may carry across conversations | Context you want ChatGPT to remember, rather than directions you want to spell out |
| Response characteristics | Style attributes such as warmth, enthusiasm, formatting, or emoji use | Adjusting how a response sounds or is presented |
These controls can work alongside one another. OpenAI describes custom instructions as a default working style, while Memory can carry relevant details between chats and characteristics can shape style. See OpenAI’s Personalizing ChatGPT and the documentation for Memory and response characteristics.

Set custom instructions for preferences you repeat
Custom instructions are the clearest choice when you want ChatGPT to follow recurring guidance without prompting it from scratch in every chat. OpenAI says, “Set your preferences, and ChatGPT will keep them in mind for all future conversations.”
#1 Best Overall
Write instructions that describe the response you want, not a vague goal such as “be better.” For example:
Use plain language. Start with the direct answer, then give the steps. Keep routine answers concise, and explain technical terms when you use them. If a key detail is missing, ask one clarifying question before making assumptions.
Make the directions specific enough to guide a response, but not so rigid that they hinder tasks where you need a different format or level of detail. You can still give a one-off request in a conversation when the situation calls for an exception.

Memory may help when you want ChatGPT to retain relevant information or preferences across conversations. Custom instructions are explicit directions; Memory is carried context. OpenAI cautions that “Memory does not retain every detail from every conversation,” so do not rely on it as a complete record or as a substitute for instructions that must be followed consistently.

To see what is available on your account, open the Personalization settings shown in ChatGPT. Review saved memories and use the controls there to manage or delete them. OpenAI’s documentation notes that Memory features and controls can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. Its Memory and new controls announcement also describes Temporary Chat for conversations where available that should not use personalization from Memory.
Adjust response characteristics for tone and presentation
If the content is fine but the delivery feels wrong, look for response characteristics. These controls address style attributes such as warmth, enthusiasm, formatting, or emoji use. They are distinct from the guidance you write in custom instructions and the context Memory may carry. OpenAI says characteristics can work alongside personality, custom instructions, and saved memories.

Find the controls available in your account
Menu labels and feature availability can change, so check the Personalization settings visible in your ChatGPT account rather than assuming one path applies to everyone. The available options may depend on your plan, region, platform, workspace, or rollout. OpenAI’s custom instructions announcement and current Help Center pages explain the features, but your account is the best guide to which controls you can use.

Personalization can be useful, but it is worth checking what context is saved and whether you want it applied. Review Memory settings and sources, manage or delete saved memories as needed, and use Temporary Chat where available when you do not want personalization from Memory. For broader context on data handling and controls, see OpenAI’s explanation of how ChatGPT learns while protecting privacy.

Custom instructions also have limits: OpenAI notes that instructions may be ignored or refused when they conflict with usage policies. Treat personalization as a way to set helpful defaults, not as a promise of accuracy or compliance.
