If it is safe to speak with your neighbor, make one calm, specific request: explain what happened, say what you want to stop, and offer a practical way to communicate instead. If the issue continues, consider mediation or local professional advice. If there is a threat or immediate danger, prioritize safety and contact local authorities rather than confronting the neighbor.
What to say to your neighbor
Keep the conversation focused on the behavior and the change you are asking for, not on labels such as “trespassing” or assumptions about who owns a disputed strip of land. For example: “I’ve noticed you’ve been walking through the side yard. Please use the path on your side and contact me before coming onto the property.” This is an illustration, not a legal formula.
If speaking face to face feels uncomfortable but contact is safe, send a brief written message. State what happened, what you want to happen from now on, and any reasonable alternative. Avoid threats or arguing over legal conclusions you have not established.

For your own clarity, note dates, what occurred, any damage, witnesses, and what you told the neighbor. Keep relevant messages and photographs of damage or conditions. This is a practical record, not a universal legal requirement. Do not secretly record conversations without checking local law; recording and privacy rules vary.

Work out whether the problem is conduct or the property line
Unwanted entry and uncertainty about the legal boundary are different problems. If the neighbor is entering an area you both agree is yours, address that conduct directly. If you disagree about where the line runs, do not treat a fence, hedge, wall, or general map as conclusive.
In England and Wales, HM Land Registry says title plans usually show general boundaries rather than the exact legal boundary. Check title documents, deeds, and solicitor paperwork; if the precise line matters, seek advice from a chartered surveyor or legal adviser. Questions about who owns or maintains a fence, hedge, or wall may be separate from where the legal boundary lies. Choose a next step if the behavior continues
If an informal request has not helped and it is safe to continue, choose a route based on what needs resolving: the behavior, the boundary location, or a formal agreement. Availability, confidentiality, cost, timing, and legal procedures vary by location.

Consider mediation
GOV.UK describes mediation as a process in which an impartial professional helps both sides work toward an agreement. Get help with boundary or legal questions
In England and Wales, GOV.UK explains that neighbors may use a boundary agreement to record a boundary or responsibility for a fence, wall, hedge, or tree. When safety comes first
Do not confront a neighbor who has threatened you or is violent. UK government guidance recommends contacting police if a neighbor is violent or harassing. In the United States, call 911 in an emergency; for a non-emergency crime report, contact the local law-enforcement agency through its non-emergency channel. Use the appropriate local emergency service elsewhere.
