Set boundaries by combining a short household agreement with separate player identities and correctly configured controls. Give every child or adult their own profile, keep the adult account and payment method behind a passcode, set age, time, purchase and communication limits on both the platform and each game, and make signing out part of the routine when a device leaves the trusted home.

Controls work best when everyone understands the rules and knows how to report an uncomfortable interaction. Revisit the arrangement as children mature, because a setting that is appropriate for a six-year-old may be unnecessarily restrictive for a teenager.

Start with a household agreement

Before opening a settings menu, agree on who may use each device, when it is available and what behavior is expected. A rule that children helped shape is easier to explain and enforce than a collection of hidden restrictions.

Decide who may use the device

List the people who are allowed to use the console, computer, phone or tablet. Decide whether guests may play, whether younger siblings may watch, and whether anyone may use another person’s profile. Make the default clear: each person uses their own identity, and guests use a temporary or guest profile when the platform provides one.

Set availability and stopping rules

Agree on regular play windows, school-night limits, meal and bedtime rules, and what happens when a session ends. The Federal Trade Commission’s screen-time guidance suggests discussing games, sleep, meals and how to stop playing rather than relying only on a timer. State the warning you will give before time expires and where the device is stored afterward.

Define approved content and social behavior

Decide which ratings and subjects are acceptable for each player. Talk about whether voice chat, text chat, friend requests and live streams are allowed, and whether an adult must approve a new contact. Include a simple response to unsafe behavior: stop communicating, block or report the player, save evidence if appropriate, and tell a trusted adult.

Agree on spending

Choose whether children can buy anything, can request purchases for approval, or may spend a fixed allowance. Clarify whether virtual currency, downloadable content, subscriptions and physical purchases follow the same rule. Never make a child responsible for remembering an adult payment password.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set shared-room etiquette

In a room used by several people, agree on volume, language and what happens when someone is studying or sleeping. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) recommends headphones in shared spaces to reduce younger children’s exposure to mature language, violence or trash talk. Headphones can reduce unwanted audio, but they do not control account access, purchases or online contacts.

Why separate profiles matter

Separate identities turn a family promise into an enforceable boundary. The ESRB recommends individual accounts and age-based rules for children, while the FTC describes separate profiles with different limits instead of letting a child use an unrestricted adult profile. A separate profile keeps saved games, friends, achievements, recommendations and permissions from being mixed together.

Use one profile per person

Create an account or local profile for every regular player. Enter accurate age information where the service requires it; an incorrect birth date can produce the wrong default permissions and complicate later changes. Do not let a child play through the adult profile simply because it already owns games or has an active subscription. If a platform supports a child account under a family group, use that structure and set the child’s permissions there.

Keep adult credentials private

The adult or family-manager account should be used only by the responsible adult. Sony’s PlayStation security guidance states, “Never share your account details with anyone else.” Nintendo’s online-safety guidance similarly says, “Please remember that it’s important to use your own account when you play, and to not share your account with others.” A child who knows the adult password can often bypass content, chat or purchase limits.

Understand what profiles do not solve

A profile separates permissions and data; it does not automatically configure every game. Some games have their own age, chat or spending controls, and a child can encounter another player’s content through an online service even when the console settings are conservative. Check both layers. Do not assume that signing into a different profile transfers ownership or permits sharing of a digital library. Rules for licenses and library sharing vary by platform, account type, region and console generation; consult the current platform terms before relying on a particular arrangement.

Configure the four control areas

Work through these areas deliberately rather than turning on a single “parental control” switch and assuming the job is finished.

1. Game ratings and content

Use the platform’s age or content-rating restriction for the child’s profile. Review the rating of each game and the descriptors for violence, language, sexual content, gambling-like mechanics or user-generated material. Rating systems and available controls differ by country, so use the rating information displayed for your region. Then inspect the game’s own settings for mature scenes, gore, voice chat and user-generated content.

2. Play time

Set schedules that match the family agreement: permitted hours, a daily duration or both. If the platform offers a warning before cutoff, enable it. Decide whether a parent can grant a one-time extension and how that request is made. A technical limit should support a predictable routine, not become a surprise punishment. Check whether time is counted per device, per game or across the family account; the behavior differs among services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Purchases

Require an adult approval step for purchases whenever the platform offers it. Add a login passcode to the adult profile and enable a purchase password or equivalent authentication. Remove stored payment methods from profiles that do not need them, and review purchase history and recurring subscriptions. A console-level approval may not cover a purchase made inside a game, through a mobile companion app or on a different device, so inspect the game and account settings as well.

4. Online communication and privacy

Choose who may send messages, friend requests or voice invitations. Start with the most restrictive setting that fits the player’s age, then loosen it only after discussion and observation. Explain how to mute, block and report. Make sure children know not to disclose their name, school, address, passwords, location or photos to people they meet in a game. Review privacy settings for profiles, activity, friends lists and streaming separately; one permission may not control the others.

Set up a shared console, PC or mobile device

Parental controls are available on virtually every video-game device, according to the ESRB, but they must be configured separately on each child’s device. Use this sequence for every console, computer, phone or tablet that can run the games.

  1. Update the device and accounts. Install current system updates, confirm the adult account’s recovery email or phone, and check that each player is signed into the intended profile.
  2. Create or join the family group. Add each regular player as a separate profile or child account. Confirm the country and age information because available controls can depend on them.
  3. Lock the adult profile. Add a device login PIN, console passcode or operating-system password. Do not use a code that a child can guess from a birthday or controller pattern.
  4. Configure content limits. Set the child’s permitted rating and review any separate game-level content controls.
  5. Configure time limits. Enter schedules and duration limits, then test what happens at the warning and cutoff.
  6. Configure purchases. Turn on approval or password authentication, remove unnecessary payment methods and check subscription renewal settings.
  7. Configure communication. Set chat, messaging, friend and privacy permissions. Test blocking and reporting from the child’s profile so the procedure is familiar.
  8. Test each profile. Sign out of the adult account, enter the child profile and try a restricted game, a purchase flow and a communication feature. Confirm that the expected prompt or block appears.
  9. Record the routine. Write down where the device is stored, who can approve exceptions and how to report a problem. Store recovery information privately with the adult.

Repeat the process on every device. A restriction set on a console may not follow the same account to a PC, mobile device or a second console, and a game may require its own control on each installation.

Protect the adult account and payment access

Use a device passcode and purchase authentication

The FTC’s 2026 guidance recommends adding passcodes or PINs to shared devices or creating separate profiles. Use both when possible: a device lock prevents casual access, while a purchase password protects the payment step after someone has entered a profile. Sony’s security guidance describes login passcodes and purchase-password protection for PlayStation accounts. Menu names change, so look under the platform’s current account, family, security or parental-control pages.

Never disclose the adult password

Enter the password yourself when approving an action. Do not save it in a browser or password manager that a child can open, and do not reuse it for email or other services. Enable multifactor authentication if the account supports it, and keep recovery codes with the adult’s other private records.

Use a safe guest procedure

On a friend’s console, a rental, a school device or any other system outside the trusted household, use a temporary profile when available. Otherwise, sign in only long enough to play, disable automatic sign-in, remove saved payment details and sign out completely. PlayStation warns that another person signing into an account may change sign-in information and lock the owner out. Treat a public or borrowed device as untrusted even if it appears familiar.

Platform examples and what to verify

PlayStation family management

Sony’s current United States family-management information says a family can contain up to seven accounts, including the family manager. It says family members’ settings and data are kept separate, and that a family manager can tailor child permissions, oversee play time and set spending limits. The exact menu labels and availability can change by console generation, account country and system software, so verify the current family-management and security pages for the account’s region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nintendo accounts

Nintendo’s online-safety guidance tells players to use their own account and not share it. Parents of younger players can create child accounts. Check the current Nintendo Account family-group and parental-controls instructions for the specific console and country, then review game-specific communication and purchase options separately.

Other consoles, PCs and mobile devices

Do not assume that a control model from one platform exists on another. When comparing options, inspect the same seven capabilities for each service:

Make chat and online safety understandable

Teach a response to uncomfortable contact

Tell children they can leave a voice channel or game without being blamed for “ruining” a session. The practical sequence is: stop replying, mute or block the account, report it through the service, preserve relevant evidence when safe, and tell a trusted adult. Practice finding these controls while everyone is calm.

Separate game skill from social permission

Being old enough to play a game does not automatically mean being ready for unrestricted chat. A teenager may be allowed to play a mature-rated title but still have messaging limited to known friends. Revisit the decision with the child and explain which behavior would earn more independence.

Review streams and user-generated content

Parental controls may not filter every video, mod, marketplace item or user-created level. Treat streams, community hubs and shared creations as separate content sources. If a game exposes a child to material the platform setting does not cover, use the game’s own controls or restrict access until you can review the feature.

Use headphones without creating a false sense of safety

Headphones are a shared-room courtesy, not a parental-control system. An over-ear gaming headset can keep mature dialogue, profanity or loud competitive chat from filling a family room, but it cannot stop a child from buying content, revealing personal information or receiving abusive messages. Set volume limits, require the child to remove headphones when an adult needs to speak, and keep the same account, time and communication rules in force.

Review and adjust the arrangement

Schedule a regular check-in

Review settings at the start of a school term, after a new device or game is added, and whenever a child’s maturity or schedule changes. The ESRB recommends talking openly with teenagers about which games they play and with whom. Ask what features they use, who they interact with and whether a rule is preventing a legitimate activity.

Use a simple review checklist

  • Every regular player still has a separate profile with accurate information.
  • The adult profile, device and payment method still require a private credential.
  • Ratings, time schedules, purchase approvals and communication permissions match the current agreement.
  • New games, mobile apps and companion services have been checked for their own controls.
  • Children can demonstrate mute, block, report and help-seeking steps.
  • Guest sessions end with sign-out and removal of saved credentials.
  • Shared-room audio and volume expectations remain workable for everyone.

Change one permission at a time

When a child earns more independence, loosen one boundary and observe the result. For example, allow friend requests from friends-of-friends while keeping voice chat restricted, or extend a weekend schedule without changing purchase approval. Incremental changes make it clear which setting caused a problem and make it easier to reverse.

Common failure modes and fixes

A child is still using the adult profile

Create the child profile first, move the routine to it and protect the adult profile with a passcode. Explain that separate saves and permissions are the reason for the change. Do not solve the convenience problem by sharing the adult password.

A purchase went through despite a restriction

Check whether the purchase occurred in the game, on another device or through a different account. Turn on purchase authentication at each relevant layer, remove stored payment details from child-accessible profiles and review recurring subscriptions. Contact the platform’s support service promptly if an unauthorized transaction needs investigation.

Time limits work on one device but not another

Confirm that the same account is being used, then inspect the second device’s family and operating-system settings. If the game tracks time independently, configure its control too. Until coverage is confirmed, enforce the household schedule manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chat is restricted but a child still hears offensive content

Check voice chat, text chat, party channels, livestreams and user-generated content separately. Use mute and block tools, report the account and consider headphones in shared rooms. A single console privacy switch may not govern every communication path.

The family cannot agree on an exception

Return to the written rule and specify who can approve exceptions, for how long and on which days. Record a one-time extension rather than quietly changing the permanent schedule. This keeps the child’s expectations and the adult’s oversight aligned.

What the available evidence says about adoption

The ESRB states that about 80% of parents set parental controls on at least one video-game device in their home. The page does not identify the survey, sample or publication year, so treat the figure as the ESRB’s stated statistic rather than a newly measured estimate. Adoption alone does not show whether settings are configured on every device or whether children understand the household rules; the quality of the routine matters more than simply enabling a switch.

A one-page rule set you can use

Write the final agreement in language everyone can remember:
