On a Samsung Galaxy phone with a microSD slot, open Camera, tap Settings, choose Storage location (or Save location), and select SD card. The option appears only when the phone supports a card and recognizes one.
Set the Camera to save photos to an SD card
- Check that your exact Galaxy model and regional version has a microSD slot. Confirm its supported card capacity in the model’s specifications; support and maximum capacity vary by model and market. Samsung UK notes that not all phone models support SD cards: Samsung UK’s memory-card guidance.
- Insert a compatible microSD card into the phone’s card tray, following the instructions for your model. Some trays have separate SIM and memory-card positions.
- Open Camera and tap the Settings gear.
- Tap Storage location or Save location, then select SD card.
- Return to Camera settings and check that SD card is shown as the selected destination. Samsung notes that labels and screen placement can vary by device and software version. See Samsung’s camera-storage instructions.
What the setting saves—and what it does not
This setting changes the destination for eligible future photos and videos captured in Camera. It does not move existing photos, switch every app to SD storage, or make every file on the phone save to the card. Some apps provide their own storage options. Samsung UK explains that it is not possible to set everything on a device to save to an SD card automatically: Samsung’s guidance on automatic SD-card saving.
Some camera modes may still use internal storage
Samsung Japan says that, for the models covered by its instructions, 8K video, UHD video at 60 fps, GIFs, burst shots, and RAW files remain in internal storage even when SD card is selected. Samsung Switzerland also identifies burst photos as an exception, citing the card’s processing speed. These statements are regional and may be model-specific; check your phone’s camera guide if a particular mode saves internally. Samsung Japan’s instructions say such files can be moved to the card after capture.

If “SD card” is missing
- Check model support. Some Galaxy phones have no card slot. Compatibility lists are market-specific: Samsung Canada’s list, for example, applies to models officially sold in Canada, and models sold elsewhere may differ. Check Samsung Canada’s compatibility information.
- Check the card and tray. Make sure the card is compatible with your phone and correctly seated in the memory-card position.
- Check whether the phone recognizes the card. If it does not, formatting may be needed. Formatting permanently erases the card, so copy important files elsewhere first.
- Confirm the file system only if troubleshooting requires it. Samsung US lists FAT32 and exFAT as compatible, with exFAT preferred in its guidance; NTFS and APFS are not compatible. Samsung says FAT32 is available only for cards under 32 GB and cannot support files larger than 4 GB. Check your phone’s current instructions before formatting, because guidance may differ by model. Move existing photos to the card
Changing Camera’s destination does not transfer photos already stored on the phone. Samsung’s US instructions use the My Files app to move or copy selected files to a folder on the SD card. The precise menu labels can vary across Android and One UI versions.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a compatible microSD card
Check the exact phone model’s supported capacity before buying a card; a format category’s maximum does not mean every Galaxy phone accepts that capacity. Samsung US describes microSDXC as suitable for high-resolution video because of its larger capacity and high read/write speed, while microSD or microSDHC can suit less demanding still photography. Compare the card type and speed with your capture needs, and confirm compatibility in your model’s documentation. Samsung’s format ranges—microSD up to 2 GB, microSDHC over 2 GB through 32 GB, and microSDXC over 32 GB through 2 TB—describe card categories, not a guarantee of phone support.
