To choose which app Android uses for tap-to-pay, open Settings, search for NFC, then go to Contactless payments → Payment default. Select the app you want and confirm. The exact menu labels can vary by phone.
Change Android’s default payment app

Open your phone’s Settings app.

Use Settings search and enter NFC.

Open NFC → Contactless payments → Payment default.

Select the payment app you want to use. Google’s instructions show Google Wallet as the selection.

Tap OK or the confirmation control shown on your phone.

Google notes that steps may differ by device. If Settings search does not find the option, some phones place it at Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → NFC → Contactless payments. Find the equivalent labels on your device; that alternate route is documented for some phones, not every Android model. Google’s instructions for setting up contactless payments include the main path.
Payment app default versus default card
Payment default selects the app Android opens for contactless payments. It does not select which card that app charges. In Google Wallet, the first payment method you add becomes the default card. To change it, open the card you want, tap Details, then choose Make default for tap to pay. Google Wallet’s instructions for changing the default card cover this separate setting.

You can also use a different card for a payment without changing the app-level default: open or select that card in Wallet before tapping your phone at the reader.
What you need for contactless payments
Choosing an app is only one part of setup. Google says contactless payments require NFC to be turned on, a supported payment method, a screen lock, and a device that meets security requirements. The phone must also meet software standards. Google’s contactless-payment setup guide lists these requirements.

For Google Wallet specifically, Google’s download guidance requires Android 9 or later and up-to-date Google Play Services and Wallet. Google Wallet does not work on rooted devices or support work profiles. These are Google Wallet requirements; they should not be assumed to apply identically to every Android payment app. Google Wallet’s download and device requirements provide the current details.

Default app: Return to NFC → Contactless payments → Payment default and verify the intended app is selected.

Card setup: Make sure a supported card is added and verified in the payment app. If Wallet says a card needs setup, complete the steps there; contact the bank if the card is suspended.

Screen lock and security: Set a screen lock and check that the device meets Google’s security requirements, including Play Protect certification.

Updates and reader position: Update Google Wallet and Google Play Services, then hold the phone close to the payment reader for a few extra seconds.
Availability also depends on whether Google Wallet and the payment method are supported in your country. Google’s contactless-payment troubleshooting guidance describes these checks.
