To keep smart-home devices apart from computers and phones, place them on separate VLANs and use firewall rules to control traffic between them. A VLAN divides shared switching equipment into distinct logical networks; it does not, by itself, decide which networks can communicate.

What a VLAN changes—and what it does not

OPNsense describes a VLAN as a way to create separate Layer 2 networks on the same physical switch. That lets a home use one compatible switch to carry several logical networks rather than requiring separate switching hardware for every group of devices. See the OPNsense VLAN and LAGG Setup guide.

Devices in the same VLAN can communicate directly at Layer 2. Communication from one VLAN to another must be routed, and the firewall can allow or restrict that traffic with rules. OPNsense’s firewall rules documentation describes a stateful packet filter for controlling traffic to and from specified networks. Segmentation is a way to enforce boundaries, not a guarantee that a compromised device cannot cause harm.

Plan the networks before configuring ports

Start by deciding which devices belong together and which communication they need. For a home setup, separate work devices, ordinary personal devices, and IoT devices into distinct networks. Guest Wi-Fi can be another network when the router or access point and switch support carrying it separately.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Work: computers and other devices that need access to work resources.
  • Personal: everyday phones, computers, and trusted home devices.
  • IoT: smart-home devices that do not need unrestricted access to personal or work devices.
  • Guest: visitors’ devices, if you want guest access isolated from household networks.

For each network, decide its gateway address and DHCP range, then write down which connections are required. For example, an IoT device may need internet access and access to a controller, but not unsolicited connections to work computers. The exact rules depend on the devices and services in your home.

What equipment and capabilities do you need?

The switch must support VLAN configuration, including the tagged and untagged behavior needed by your design. OPNsense cautions that not every switch has the necessary VLAN features, and that vendor setup procedures differ. Confirm the exact model’s capabilities and instructions rather than relying on a product category name alone.

NetworkChuck’s October 5, 2026 tutorial demonstrates a build using OPNsense, a QNAP QSW-L2110-10T lite-managed switch, and a Getorli mini PC. These are examples from that tutorial, not required components. Its description says the creator used a Ryzen 3 5300U unit from Japan; the US listing linked in the description is for a Ryzen 7 6800H model. Understand tagged trunks and untagged access ports

A tagged frame carries VLAN identification, which allows a link to transport traffic for multiple VLANs. Such links are commonly used between a firewall and switch, or between a switch and an access point that carries multiple Wi-Fi networks. An untagged frame has no VLAN tag; a switch assigns it to the VLAN configured for that port. A port configured this way is commonly used for an ordinary wired device that belongs to one network.

In OPNsense’s illustrative setup, tagged VLANs travel on the switch-to-firewall trunk, while ordinary PC ports have untagged VLAN membership. An access point may use a management VLAN along with tagged guest Wi-Fi VLANs. This is an example, not a universal port recipe: configure both ends of each link to agree on the VLANs and tagging behavior.

Pay particular attention to the firewall-to-switch trunk. OPNsense warns against mixing tagged and untagged VLANs on this trunk because broadcasts may leak, depending on switch behavior. Follow the firewall and switch vendors’ instructions for the exact model and configuration.

Configure the firewall policy, not just the VLANs

Once VLAN interfaces and their addressing are set up, create rules that express which networks may initiate traffic to others. A deny-by-default approach—allowing only necessary flows—is a useful policy pattern, but the rule order, interface, direction, and required services matter. The NetworkChuck description mentions deny-by-default rules and an alias for its IoT segment; it does not provide a complete validated configuration transcript, so those details should not be treated as a tested recipe.

  1. Create the VLANs and switch memberships. Use the firewall and switch documentation for the device-specific configuration. Ensure each endpoint port is assigned to the intended network and each trunk carries only the required VLANs.
  2. Assign firewall interfaces and addressing. Give each network its own gateway interface and define the corresponding DHCP scope if the firewall will provide DHCP.
  3. Write inter-network rules. Permit required services and destinations; restrict unnecessary access, especially from IoT and guest networks toward work and personal devices.
  4. Test expected and forbidden paths. Check that a device receives an address from the intended range, can reach the services it needs, and cannot reach networks that policy is meant to isolate.

Be deliberate about rule placement and the direction in which traffic is evaluated. A rule that permits needed internet access is not the same as a rule allowing access to another internal VLAN. Consult the OPNsense rules guide and the switch documentation when troubleshooting.

How to check that the separation works

  • Connect a test device to each wired port or Wi-Fi network and confirm it receives an address from the expected DHCP range.
  • Confirm each device can reach its assigned gateway and intended services.
  • Test access between networks in both directions where relevant; a denied connection in one direction does not necessarily prove the reverse is blocked.
  • Check switch port VLAN membership and trunk tagging if a device lands on the wrong network or cannot obtain an address.
  • Review firewall logs and rules when permitted traffic fails, then make the smallest policy change needed rather than opening broad access between networks.
