The cleanest separation depends on your phone. On Android, use an employer-provisioned Android Enterprise Work Profile: work apps and data stay in a managed profile while your personal profile remains under your control. On iPhone, Apple does not provide an Android-style second visible profile; your organization must support account-driven User Enrollment or Device Enrollment, which keeps a Managed Apple Account and your personal Apple Account on one device.
Ask your IT team which enrollment method and privacy policy apply before changing settings. The organization’s management configuration determines what can be installed, which settings are required, and how work access is removed.
Choose the right separation method first
Your route is determined by four facts: the operating system, who owns the phone, whether the organization supports bring-your-own-device (BYOD) enrollment, and the management service your employer uses. There is no universal switch that creates a work space on every phone.
| Situation | Practical route | What is separated | Key dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal Android phone used for work | Android Enterprise Work Profile | Work apps and data are held in a separate managed profile; your personal profile remains separate | Your employer’s enrollment system and a supported Android device |
| Company-owned Android phone | Android Enterprise management, often with a Work Profile or fully managed configuration | Scope depends on whether the organization manages only work or the whole device | Ownership model and the employer’s policy |
| Personal iPhone used for work | Apple account-driven User Enrollment or account-driven Device Enrollment | Managed work accounts, apps and data are separated from personal data | The organization must support a Managed Apple Account and an Apple device-management service |
| Samsung BYOD phone | Samsung Knox Manage Work Profile enrollment | A work profile for organization-managed apps and data | Employer configuration and the exact supported model; a model-by-model list is not established in the Knox documentation |
Do not buy a second phone simply because you need separation. If you are replacing a device, first confirm that the exact Android model supports Android Enterprise Work Profile and that it meets your employer’s compatibility rules. A phone can be modern and still fail an organization’s enrollment requirements.

How Android Work Profile separates work from personal use
Android Enterprise Work Profile is designed for employee- and company-owned devices. It creates a managed profile for organization-approved work apps and data while leaving the personal profile separate. Android describes the arrangement as a way to separate work apps and data from an employee’s personal information; personal-profile app use remains private. See Google’s Android work profile overview.
Work apps normally carry a small briefcase badge and appear in a Work tab or alongside personal apps, depending on the phone’s launcher. The badge is a practical check that you are opening the managed copy. A personal version of the same app, if allowed, is a different installation and does not automatically share data with its work-profile copy.
What the profile does
- Places organization-deployed apps and their data inside the managed profile.
- Applies work-specific security and configuration policies to that profile.
- Lets you pause the work profile, which can stop work notifications and access outside working hours when your organization allows it.
- Keeps personal-profile apps and data outside the work policy boundary. Android states that personal-profile app use remains private.
Privacy is not identical to “the employer cannot manage anything on the phone.” The management service can enforce requirements on the work profile and may require device-level conditions for access. Read your organization’s privacy notice for the exact information it collects and controls.
Android enrollment: use your employer’s current path
Enrollment is created by your organization’s management service, not by manually making a second Google account. Microsoft Intune is one example of such a service. In Intune, policies apply to the Work Profile, deployed apps appear there, and apps and data outside it remain personal and under the user’s control. Work applications have distinct icons. The Intune Android Enterprise work profile overview explains the management boundary.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Microsoft’s current guidance says web-based enrollment is the default for new Intune tenants and that Company Portal app-based enrollment is being phased out. Your tenant may still use the app flow, so follow the instructions supplied by your employer rather than a generic video or an old help page.
Before you start
- Ask IT whether your phone is a personally owned Work Profile device, a company-owned device, or another Android Enterprise mode.
- Request the official enrollment URL or the exact app name and sign-in instructions.
- Confirm which account to use and whether your organization requires multifactor authentication, a screen lock, encryption, or a minimum Android version.
- Ask what support is available if enrollment fails and what data is removed when you leave the organization.
Web-based enrollment steps
- Open the employer-provided enrollment URL in Chrome, Edge, or Samsung Browser. Microsoft lists those browsers for the current web flow.
- Sign in with your work identity and complete the organization’s authentication prompts.
- Review the permissions and management notice. If the notice does not explain what is managed, stop and ask IT for the privacy documentation.
- Accept the Android Enterprise prompt to create a Work Profile. Android will add a managed profile rather than cloning your entire phone.
- Open the launcher’s Work section and check for briefcase-badged apps. Launch a work app from that copy and complete any in-app sign-in.
- Allow the management service time to apply required policies and install assigned apps. Missing apps can indicate that the assignment has not reached your account yet.
- Test a work notification and a personal notification separately so you know which profile each belongs to.
Microsoft warns that passkey-only authentication cannot complete the current web-enrollment flow. If your account permits only a passkey and the browser flow stops at authentication, contact IT for an allowed sign-in method or an alternate enrollment path; do not remove security controls on your own.
Company Portal app enrollment
Some existing Intune tenants still direct users to the Company Portal app. Install it only from the official store listing or the link supplied by your employer, sign in, and follow its Android Enterprise prompts. If the app says that your tenant now requires web enrollment, switch to the supplied URL. The transition from app-based to web-based enrollment is tenant-dependent.
Pausing work after hours
When enabled by your employer and phone manufacturer, use the Work Profile pause control in Quick Settings or the profile settings to stop work apps and notifications temporarily. Pausing is not unenrollment: the profile and its policies remain on the phone, and work access resumes when you turn it back on.

Android limitations to know
- Not every Android model, browser, or employer tenant supports every enrollment flow.
- Android 15’s Private Space is treated as personal and is not supported for Intune management. It cannot substitute for an Intune Work Profile.
- A work profile does not merge personal and work calendars, contacts, files, or app data automatically. Use the sharing or integration features your organization approves.
- If a work app opens without a briefcase badge, check that you did not install or launch a personal copy.
How iPhone separates work and personal accounts
Apple’s method is account-driven rather than a second, visible home-screen profile. Account-driven User Enrollment and account-driven Device Enrollment can sign in a Managed Apple Account alongside your personal Apple Account while separating managed work data from personal data. Apple says this approach supports work-related apps, settings, and accounts while keeping personal information private. Read Apple’s account-driven enrolment documentation, published 11 December 2024.
“This approach allows both a Managed Apple Account and a personal Apple Account to be signed in on the same device, with complete separation of work and personal data.” — Apple, Account-driven enrolment methods with Apple devices
The exact controls still depend on the organization’s device-management service. Account-driven Device Enrollment may impose more management than User Enrollment, so ask which method your employer uses and whether the phone is treated as personal or organization-owned.

- Ask IT to confirm that account-driven User Enrollment or account-driven Device Enrollment is supported for your iPhone and to provide your Managed Apple Account.
- Open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
- Choose Sign In to Work or School Account, if that control is available on your version of iOS and in your organization’s configuration.
- Authenticate with the Managed Apple Account and complete the enrollment prompts supplied by your employer.
- Review the management and privacy information before accepting. The organization must publish the enrollment service; the menu alone cannot create a valid work account.
- Check that the Managed Apple Account and your personal Apple Account are both present where expected, and install managed work apps through the organization’s approved method.
- Keep work files and credentials in the managed apps and accounts. Do not copy them into personal apps unless your organization explicitly permits that workflow.
Menus and labels can vary with iOS versions and management configuration. If Sign In to Work or School Account is missing, that usually means your organization has not enabled the required service for your device, not that you need to create another personal Apple Account.

What happens when Apple enrollment ends
Apple documents separate encryption keys for managed data. When the user or management service unenrolls the device, the operating system destroys those keys, and managed apps are removed during unenrollment. Personal apps and personal data are not converted into managed content. Before leaving a job, follow the organization’s offboarding instructions and copy only data you are authorized to retain.
Samsung Knox as an employer-managed option
Samsung Knox Manage documentation lists Work Profile as an enrollment type for personal or BYOD devices. It can therefore be the route your employer uses on a Samsung phone, but the documentation does not establish a current compatibility list for every model. Check the exact model, Android version, region, and employer policy before purchase or enrollment. See Samsung Knox Manage’s single-device enrollment guide.

| Area | Android personal Work Profile | Apple account-driven enrollment |
|---|---|---|
| Work apps and work data | Managed inside the Work Profile; policies and assigned apps apply there | Managed apps, accounts, settings, and data are separated under the enrollment method |
| Personal apps and data | Android states personal-profile app use remains private and outside the work profile | Apple describes personal information as private and separate from managed data |
| Notifications | Work notifications can be paused or toggled off when the device and policy allow | Notification behavior depends on the managed app and organization settings |
| Device requirements | Your employer can require conditions needed for work access; exact conditions are tenant-specific | Restrictions and required settings depend on User Enrollment or Device Enrollment configuration |
| Removal | Follow the organization’s unenrollment process; the profile and its managed content are removed according to policy | Managed apps are removed and Apple destroys the separate managed-data encryption keys when enrollment ends |
Do not assume that a personal phone means “IT has no control,” or that enrollment means “IT can read everything.” The reliable answer is the written notice from your employer, which should identify the enrollment type, managed data, required device settings, support process, and removal behavior.

Unenrolling, changing jobs, or replacing the phone
Leaving an organization
Use the employer’s offboarding instructions rather than deleting random profiles or apps. Unenrollment may revoke work access, remove managed applications, and delete managed data. On Apple account-driven enrollment, the operating system also destroys the keys that protect managed data. If you need a work document for a lawful business record, ask the organization to export or transfer it before unenrollment.
Moving to a new phone
- Confirm the replacement model and operating-system version with IT before buying it.
- Check whether the organization permits migration or requires a fresh enrollment.
- Back up personal data using your normal personal backup method, but do not assume that work-profile or managed data belongs in that backup.
- Enroll the new device through the current official instructions.
- Keep the old phone enrolled until IT confirms that work access has moved and the old profile can be removed.
Troubleshooting common separation problems
No Work Profile option appears on Android
Your employer may not support BYOD, may have assigned a different Android Enterprise mode, or may not have enabled the feature for your account. Verify the ownership type and request the current enrollment URL. Installing a random management app will not create an authorized profile.
The Android browser flow fails at sign-in
Use Chrome, Edge, or Samsung Browser as specified by Microsoft’s current guidance. If the account is restricted to passkey-only authentication, ask IT for a supported method because that authentication mode cannot complete the current web flow. Do not repeatedly reset the phone; the problem is usually tenant configuration or authentication policy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWork apps are missing or have no briefcase badge
Wait for policy synchronization, check the Work section of the launcher, and confirm that you signed in with the work identity. A personal copy of an app may be present separately. If assigned apps still do not arrive, give IT the device name, Android version, and the time enrollment completed.
Work notifications continue after hours
Pause the Work Profile or use its notification control if your phone exposes that setting. If the control is unavailable, the organization or device manufacturer may have disabled it; ask IT whether an after-hours policy can be enabled.
iPhone has no work-account sign-in control
Account-driven enrollment must be published and configured by the organization. Ask IT whether your iPhone, iOS version, and Managed Apple Account are eligible and whether the organization uses User Enrollment or Device Enrollment. Creating a second personal Apple Account will not reproduce Apple’s managed separation.
Quick Recap
Five-minute privacy checklist
- Identify whether the phone is Android or iPhone and whether you own it.
- Ask IT for the exact enrollment method, official URL or app, supported-device requirements, and privacy notice.
- Confirm what is managed, what remains personal, what notifications can be paused, and what is removed at unenrollment.
- Enroll only through the employer-provided instructions and verify the work badge or Managed Apple Account afterward.
- Before replacing or leaving the device, complete the organization’s transfer and unenrollment process instead of deleting profiles ad hoc.
