To send a photo or video as a file rather than through Telegram’s regular media flow, open the chat’s attachment menu and choose File (or the equivalent file/document option). On Android, Telegram’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends Paperclip > File for sending a video without compression. The exact labels and steps may vary by platform and app version.
Send the photo or video using Telegram’s file option

Choose File or the equivalent file/document option—not the regular photo or video picker.

Select the photo or video from your device and send it.
This route sends the media through Telegram’s file path instead of its ordinary photo/video path, which is the option to use when preserving the source media as a file matters. Telegram’s cited troubleshooting instructions are Android-specific, so the menu wording and sequence are not confirmed to be identical on iOS, Desktop, or Web. Telegram’s Android issue guidance and Telegram’s FAQ describe the file and media options.

Why the in-app attachment route matters
On Android, an issue report describes a problem with using the operating system’s Share button and then trying to send the item as a file. The issue guidance recommends opening Telegram first and selecting File from the in-app paperclip menu instead. If the Share flow does not give you the result you expect, use Telegram’s attachment menu directly. See Telegram’s Android issue guidance.
What changes when you send a video as a file
A file-sent video may not have the same convenient in-chat preview or streaming behavior as a video sent through Telegram’s media flow. That possibility comes from an individual Android user’s report, not a guarantee about every Telegram client or recipient. The report is in Telegram’s Android issue tracker.

Telegram’s video quality and optimization controls are a separate matter. Its 2024 announcement discusses selecting video quality for playback and loading in large channels; it does not establish that those controls send the uncompressed original. Read Telegram’s 2024 product announcement.

Telegram’s FAQ describes support for different file types and cloud access across devices, and includes a comparison mentioning files up to 2 GB. A 2022 Telegram product post also described sending files up to 2 GB each. Those are historical statements, not verification of a current universal limit; check Telegram’s current documentation and any limits shown in your account before relying on a particular maximum.
