To send Apple Cash on an iPhone, open an iMessage conversation, tap the Apps or plus button, choose Apple Cash, enter an amount, review the payment source, then double-click the side button and authenticate. Apple Cash is available in the United States, and the payment is sent only after you confirm it.
Before you send: check setup and eligibility
Apple says you need a compatible device running current software, two-factor authentication enabled for your Apple Account, and that same Apple Account signed in on the device. You also need enough Apple Cash to cover the payment or an eligible debit card in Wallet. Apple Cash is available in the United States. A standard Apple Cash account requires the user to be at least 18 and a U.S. resident; a family organizer can set up Apple Cash Family for an under-18 family member, although some features requiring a supported payment card may not be available to minors. Send Apple Cash in Messages on iPhone

Open Messages and start or open an iMessage conversation with the person you want to pay.

Tap the Apps or plus button beside the message field, then tap Apple Cash. Enter the amount. If the conversation includes an underlined monetary amount, Apple says you can tap it to open Apple Cash with that amount filled in.

Tap Send. Add an optional comment if you want, then review the payment and the displayed payment source.

Apple Cash balance is selected by default. If available, you can choose an eligible debit card instead. If your Apple Cash balance is less than the payment, Apple’s instructions say the debit card can be charged for the remainder.

Apple’s interface labels and button placement can vary with software versions. If the payment control is missing, check that you are in an iMessage conversation and that your device, account, and region meet Apple’s requirements.

What happens if the recipient has not accepted?
If the recipient has manual acceptance enabled, they must open the Messages conversation and tap Accept. Apple gives them seven days to accept. If the payment remains pending because it has not been accepted, you can cancel it from Apple Cash transaction history. Apple’s Apple Cash instructions cover sending and pending payments.
Limits and fees: sending is not cashing out
Apple’s published standard person-to-person limits are $1 minimum and $10,000 maximum per message, with a $10,000 rolling seven-day maximum. Apple Cash Family and Tap to Cash each have a $2,000 per-message and rolling seven-day maximum, according to Apple’s limits and fees page.

Those are sending limits, not transfer-out fees. If you later move an Apple Cash balance to a bank or debit card, Apple’s February 2026 limits page says a bank transfer is free and generally takes one to three business days. Instant Transfer to an eligible debit card is typically immediate and costs 1.7%, with a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum. Apple does not state that this Instant Transfer fee applies to sending a person-to-person payment in Messages.

Apple cautions: “Apple Cash person-to-person payments are like any other private transaction between two people, so only send and receive money with people you know.” Avoid paying unknown contacts, acting under pressure, or responding to requests from someone impersonating a business, government agency, Apple, or tech support.
