Use a monitoring agent or dashboard, then connect it to an authenticated SMTP relay. Monit is the compact choice for watching local processes, filesystems, ports, protocols and resource limits. Uptime Kuma is better when you want a browser dashboard, endpoint checks, status pages and several notification channels. In either case, configure SMTP with TLS, create a dedicated sender account, trigger a deliberate test alert and verify that retries work before relying on the system.
This guide shows both implementations, explains which checks each can perform, and gives a practical design for avoiding silent monitoring failures and alert fatigue.

What you need before configuring alerts
Prepare these items first:
- A Linux VPS running the service or endpoint you want to monitor.
- Either Monit, Uptime Kuma, or both, installed and running on a supported Linux distribution.
- An SMTP relay that accepts authenticated submissions from your VPS. Confirm its hostname, submission port, encryption mode, username, password and permitted sender address with the relay provider.
- An address that should receive incidents. Use a mailbox you actively check, not only an address hosted on the same VPS.
- Administrative access to the monitoring configuration and permission to restart or reload the monitoring service.
SMTP port numbers are not interchangeable. Monit documents port 465 for SSL and port 25 for TLS or non-secure connections as defaults; many relays also offer a submission port such as 587 with negotiated TLS. Treat those as relay-specific settings and verify the current requirement before saving a configuration.
Choose Monit or Uptime Kuma
The two tools solve different monitoring problems. Monit runs as an agent on the VPS and reacts to local operating-system conditions. Uptime Kuma presents a web dashboard and checks services or endpoints through configurable monitors.

| Decision point | Monit | Uptime Kuma |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Local process, filesystem, port, protocol and resource supervision | Dashboard-based HTTP(S), TCP, ping, DNS, Docker, database and other endpoint monitoring |
| Configuration style | Configuration files and service reloads | Web interface with monitor and notification forms |
| Alert channel covered here | Authenticated SMTP, with global or per-service recipients | Email (SMTP) notification channel |
| View of incidents | Agent events and email messages | Browser dashboard, monitor history and optional status pages |
| Monitoring location | Normally the VPS being monitored | Wherever the Uptime Kuma instance runs; deploy it on a separate host for an independent view |
| Operational trade-off | Small footprint and deep local checks, but you must maintain configuration files | Centralized management and broader endpoint coverage, but you must secure and maintain a web application |
Running either tool on the same VPS means a complete host failure can also stop the alerting process. For host-level availability, place Uptime Kuma or another monitoring instance outside the server under observation, or use a second monitoring location. A local Monit instance remains useful for detecting a failed process and attempting a restart while the host is still alive.
Path 1: Configure Monit email alerts
Monit supports a global set alert target for all services and an alert statement inside an individual service entry. Its official documentation describes both approaches. Start globally when every important event should reach the same operations mailbox; use a per-service alert when only selected failures should notify a particular recipient.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems1. Confirm the running Monit instance
Check that Monit is installed, that its daemon is enabled, and that the configuration you edit is the one the running service loads. Distribution layouts differ, so use the package’s service status and configuration-validation mechanisms rather than assuming a single path. Record the installed Monit version because directive syntax and supported TLS options can vary.
2. Define the SMTP relay
Add a set mailserver statement with the relay hostname, port, credentials and encryption mode required by your provider. A conceptual configuration is:

set mailserver smtp.example.net port 587 username "ALERT_USER" password "ALERT_PASSWORD" using TLS
set alert admin@example.com only on { timeout, nonexist, connection, resource }
check process webapp with pidfile /run/webapp.pid
start program = "/usr/local/bin/webapp-start"
stop program = "/usr/local/bin/webapp-stop"
if failed host 127.0.0.1 port 8080 protocol http then alert
The host, account, password, recipient, process name, pidfile and commands in this example are illustrative. Adapt the syntax to your installed Monit release, protect the credentials, and select the relay’s documented TLS mode. Monit documents SSL/TLS options, certificate checks and configurable ports; do not infer that a relay accepting port 587 will also accept implicit SSL on 465.
3. Set recipients and reduce noise
The global line sends only the event classes listed after only on. Monit supports event allowlists and denylists through only on { ... } and but not on { ... }. Begin with actionable events such as timeouts, missing processes, connection failures and resource violations. Add less urgent state changes only after you know how frequently they occur. A per-service alert statement can route a database failure to a specialist without changing recipients for unrelated services.
4. Add checks that match the failure you care about
Use a process check when a daemon can disappear, a port or protocol check when the process exists but is not serving, a filesystem or resource check when capacity or load threatens availability, and a host connection check for a local endpoint. The sample’s HTTP probe to 127.0.0.1:8080 tests the service response rather than merely confirming that a process ID exists. Configure start and stop actions only when you understand their side effects and have tested them in your deployment.
5. Make delivery resilient
Monit can test SMTP itself and can use multiple mail servers for failover. Enable its persistent event queue when delayed delivery must survive a temporary relay outage. The documented form is set eventqueue basedir ...; choose a directory on persistent storage and ensure the Monit service can write to it. When the mail server recovers, queued events can be retried instead of being discarded during the outage.

6. Validate before relying on it
- Validate the configuration with the Monit version’s check or syntax-validation command.
- Reload Monit and confirm that it reports the expected services and event rules.
- Use Monit’s SMTP test capability, if available in your release, to verify authentication, TLS negotiation and recipient delivery.
- Trigger a controlled event, such as briefly stopping a test service or making a disposable test port unavailable. Do not interrupt a production database or other critical workload merely to test mail.
- Confirm the message arrives, includes the service and event details you need, and is not placed in spam or rejected by the relay.
- Restore the test condition and verify that the recovery notification behavior is what you expect.
Path 2: Configure Uptime Kuma SMTP notifications
Uptime Kuma’s feature set includes HTTP(S), TCP, ping, DNS, Docker, database and other monitor types, with Email (SMTP) listed as a notification channel. It is a good fit when you want one web interface for monitors, history, status pages and recipients rather than editing an agent configuration file.
1. Secure and reach the Uptime Kuma instance
Run Uptime Kuma on the VPS only if local service visibility is your primary concern. For an alert that should continue when the VPS is unreachable, host the monitoring instance on a different server or network. Restrict administrative access to the dashboard, use its supported authentication controls, and avoid exposing an unprotected management interface to the public internet.
2. Create an Email (SMTP) notification
- Open the notification settings in the installed Uptime Kuma release. The exact menu and field labels can change between versions.
- Select Email (SMTP) as the notification type.
- Enter the relay hostname and submission port supplied by your provider.
- Choose the matching encryption mode, such as TLS or SSL, and enter the SMTP username and password if the relay requires authentication.
- Set the sender address and one or more recipient addresses. Use a sender identity authorized by the relay.
- Save the notification and use the interface’s test function when available. Confirm receipt before attaching the notification to every monitor.
Do not copy Monit’s port or TLS defaults blindly into Uptime Kuma. The relay’s requirements, not the monitoring product, determine whether the connection uses implicit SSL, negotiated TLS or another supported mode.
3. Add monitors and notifications
Create a monitor for each outcome that matters. HTTP(S) checks can cover a website or API, TCP checks can verify that a service is listening, ping checks test basic reachability, DNS checks validate name resolution, and the documented Docker and database monitor types cover additional local dependencies. Attach the SMTP notification to the monitors that should generate email, then perform a controlled failure and recovery test.

4. Decide where checks originate
A monitor aimed at 127.0.0.1 answers “is this service responding from the monitoring host?” A monitor aimed at a public hostname answers whether that endpoint is reachable from Uptime Kuma’s network. Neither proves that every user or network can reach it. If the Kuma instance shares the same VPS, a host outage can remove both the check and the notification path; an external deployment gives you a more independent signal.

SMTP design for dependable alerts
Use a dedicated sender identity
Create an account used only for monitoring messages and limit its permissions and recipient scope. This separates alert credentials from personal mail and makes rotation or revocation less disruptive. Keep the password out of world-readable configuration files, shared screenshots and unprotected backups. Rotate it according to the relay provider’s current policy.
Prefer authenticated TLS
Use an authenticated relay with TLS wherever the provider supports it. Monit documents username/password authentication, SSL/TLS configuration and certificate checks. Encryption protects credentials and message transport in transit, but it does not guarantee delivery to the final mailbox; the relay can still reject an unauthorized sender, quota-exceeding account or malformed message.
Control recipients and event volume
Send only actionable events to the primary mailbox. Monit’s global and per-service filters let you exclude noisy event types. Uptime Kuma lets you associate a notification channel with selected monitors rather than every check. If your team needs escalation, add recipients deliberately and document who owns each alert class.

Monitor the alert path itself
Receiving one test message proves only that one transaction worked. Keep a recurring test monitor or scheduled operational check that exercises the SMTP path, and watch the monitoring application’s own status. Monit can test SMTP; Uptime Kuma can monitor TCP or HTTP endpoints. A mailbox rule, provider quota, expired credential or blocked port can otherwise disable alerts while application checks continue to look healthy.
Common failures and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Connection times out | Wrong hostname or port, firewall egress rule, or relay refusing the VPS network | Resolve the relay name, verify outbound access to the provider’s documented port, and inspect the relay’s connection logs. |
| TLS or certificate error | SSL selected where negotiated TLS is required, certificate validation failure, or an outdated trust store | Match the encryption mode to the relay, verify the server name, and update trusted certificates through your normal OS maintenance process. |
| Authentication rejected | Incorrect credentials, disabled SMTP access, or account policy requiring a different password or token | Confirm the account is permitted to submit mail and re-enter credentials without exposing them in logs. |
| Mail accepted but never seen | Recipient filtering, spam quarantine, sender authorization or relay-side policy | Search quarantine and relay logs, verify the authorized sender, and test a mailbox outside the VPS’s own domain. |
| Duplicate or excessive alerts | Too many event classes, overlapping monitors or repeated state changes | Use Monit’s allowlist/denylist filters or narrow Uptime Kuma notification assignments; alert on transitions and actionable failures. |
| Alerts stop during a VPS outage | The monitoring process and the monitored service share the same host | Move the dashboard or a second check to an independent server or network. |
| Failure detected but message arrives late | Temporary SMTP outage or queued event delivery | Inspect Monit’s event queue and relay status; retain a persistent queue on writable storage and confirm retry behavior after recovery. |
A production rollout checklist
- Choose Monit for local process and resource supervision, Uptime Kuma for dashboard and endpoint breadth, or combine them when both perspectives are valuable.
- Obtain the relay’s current hostname, port, encryption mode, authentication rules and sender requirements.
- Create a dedicated monitoring sender account and a recipient list with a clear owner.
- Configure SMTP using TLS and protect the stored credentials.
- Define only the process, port, protocol, filesystem, resource or endpoint checks that represent real service objectives.
- Filter routine events so an alert indicates an action, not merely a state change that occurs every few minutes.
- Enable Monit’s persistent event queue or an equivalent retry mechanism where delayed delivery is unacceptable.
- Place at least one check outside the VPS if host-level outages matter.
- Send a test message, trigger a controlled failure, verify recovery behavior and inspect spam or quarantine handling.
- Document the relay account owner, monitor locations, recipients, credential-rotation process and steps for disabling a noisy check.
Which setup should you use?
Use Monit alone when local remediation matters
Select Monit when the key question is whether a daemon, port, protocol, filesystem or resource on this VPS is healthy and you want a lightweight agent that can run start and stop actions. Its file-based configuration is efficient for administrators who manage infrastructure as code, but syntax, credentials and reloads must be handled carefully.
Use Uptime Kuma alone when visibility and endpoint checks matter
Select Uptime Kuma when a browser dashboard, monitor history, status pages and several check types are more important than local process control. It centralizes SMTP notification settings and is easier for a team that prefers a user interface, provided the dashboard is secured and hosted where it can observe the desired endpoint.
Combine them for two independent questions
A practical combined design uses Monit on the VPS for immediate local failures and restart actions, while Uptime Kuma runs elsewhere to test the public endpoint. The two tools then cover both “is the service alive on the host?” and “can an independent observer reach it?” without treating either signal as a complete guarantee of availability.
