To sell a corporate group membership in WordPress, combine one organization-level purchase with separate employee accounts whose access is controlled by that purchase. The two documented routes are Teams for WooCommerce Memberships for WooCommerce stores and Paid Memberships Pro Group Accounts for PMPro sites. Choose the route that matches your existing membership and checkout stack, then define seat pricing, invitations, administration, and access changes when billing stops.

What a corporate group membership must do

A normal individual membership usually grants benefits to one account. A corporate plan needs an additional layer: an employer or team owner pays, while distinct employee accounts receive the plan benefits.

  • One purchaser: The company or its representative completes checkout.
  • Separate identities: Employees use their own WordPress accounts rather than sharing one login.
  • Roster control: An authorized person can invite, remove, or otherwise manage members.
  • Defined commercial unit: You sell either individual seats or a fixed-size team.
  • Lifecycle rules: Employees know what happens after a failed payment, pause, cancellation, expiration, or seat reduction.

The dedicated extensions add these owner-and-member workflows. A permissions plugin by itself should not be assumed to provide company checkout, parent billing, invitations, and seat accounting.

Choose the WordPress route that matches your stack

Route Best fit Purchase and pricing Member administration Dependencies and caveats
Teams for WooCommerce Memberships A store already using WooCommerce and WooCommerce Memberships Configure per-member or per-team pricing, with optional minimum and maximum team sizes and seat counts. Subscription billing is supported with WooCommerce Subscriptions. The team owner can invite members or share a registration link, and team controls govern seats and management. WooCommerce Memberships is required and purchased separately. Verify renewal, pause, cancellation, and switching behavior for your intended subscription flow.
Paid Memberships Pro Group Accounts A site already using Paid Memberships Pro A parent account pays for a group; the add-on uses separate parent and child membership levels. A group-management page, invitations, administrative tools, and a documented member-import path are available. PMPro must be installed and activated with an eligible license type. Confirm current plan eligibility and feature details before committing.
Groups with WooCommerce integration A site primarily needs group-based permissions and access control The WordPress.org listing identifies WooCommerce integration, but does not establish a complete corporate seat-sales workflow. Organizes users into groups and assigns rights. Treat it as a permissions option unless current documentation confirms the exact checkout, billing, invitation, and seat behavior you need.

Decisions to make before configuring products

Per-seat or fixed-team pricing

With per-member pricing, the company pays according to the number of seats purchased or occupied. With per-team pricing, one product represents a defined block or team. Set minimum and maximum sizes deliberately: a minimum protects your commercial model, while a maximum prevents a buyer from adding unplanned users.

Does the purchaser use a seat?

Decide whether the team owner receives membership benefits or only administers the roster. WooCommerce’s team settings can allow the owner to manage a team without consuming a member seat, depending on configuration. State this clearly on the product page.

Who can administer employees?

Choose whether only the purchaser can invite and remove users or whether a company manager can also perform those actions. Limit administrative rights to people who should see the roster and billing-related controls.

How do employees join?

Document whether employees receive individual invitations or use a controlled registration link. Each employee needs a site account. Explain where they sign in and where the plan’s benefits appear after joining.

What happens when billing changes?

Write the rule before launch. For the WooCommerce Subscriptions integration, the team follows the subscription record: pausing or cancelling the subscription pauses or cancels member access. Tell the buyer and employees when access changes take effect, and check how renewals and any subscription-switching limitation affect your plans.

Implementation sequence for a corporate plan

  1. Map the current stack. If the site uses WooCommerce Memberships, evaluate Teams for WooCommerce Memberships. If it uses Paid Memberships Pro, evaluate Group Accounts. Confirm the base plugin, extension, and license prerequisites first.
  2. Create the commercial unit. Decide per-seat versus fixed-team pricing, then configure the seat count and any minimum or maximum. For WooCommerce, these are product configuration choices.
  3. Define owner and manager permissions. Decide who pays, who receives benefits, who invites members, who removes them, and whether the purchaser occupies a seat.
  4. Publish the onboarding path. Describe checkout, account creation, invitation or registration-link use, and the page where members access their benefits. Avoid promising access before the employee has completed account registration.
  5. Document lifecycle events. Specify the result of failed payment, pause, cancellation, expiration, renewal, and a reduction in seats. Include a support procedure for correcting an accidental invitation or removal.
  6. Test the complete journeys in staging. Run checkout, account creation, invitations, unused and fully occupied seats, renewal, cancellation, and administrator corrections with test accounts before launch.

How the WooCommerce team workflow works

Base requirements

Teams for WooCommerce Memberships extends WooCommerce Memberships, so both the base membership system and the team extension are part of the implementation. Add WooCommerce Subscriptions when you need recurring team billing.

Checkout and seats

Create a team product and choose whether its price is calculated per member or per team. Configure the available seat count and, where appropriate, minimum and maximum team sizes. Decide whether an owner is also a member before publishing the product.

Invitations and registration

The owner can invite employees or provide a registration link, according to the configured workflow. Employees must have accounts on the site. The owner remains responsible for team maintenance, while members receive the benefits attached to the membership plan.

Recurring billing and access

When a team is tied to a WooCommerce subscription, subscription state controls the team’s memberships. A pause or cancellation therefore affects all members, not just the person who completed checkout. Test the exact behavior of renewals and plan changes in your installation before selling annual or monthly options.

How the PMPro Group Accounts workflow works

Parent and child levels

Group Accounts models the purchaser as a parent account and employees as child accounts. The parent pays for and manages the group, while child accounts receive their assigned membership level.

Management and invitations

Use the group-management page and the add-on’s invitation and administration tools to control the roster. The documentation also describes an import path, which can help when a company supplies an existing employee list; validate the required format and permissions in your current version.

License and level planning

PMPro must be active with a license type that includes the add-on. Create and name parent and child membership levels so that employees, administrators, and support staff can distinguish them. Confirm current eligibility and feature details because plan availability can change.

What not to confuse with a corporate membership sale

The Groups plugin can organize WordPress users and assign rights, and it identifies WooCommerce integration. That is useful for access control, but the cited product information does not establish the full workflow required for a corporate sale: one parent payment, seat rules, invitations, roster administration, and billing-driven access changes. Add a dedicated group-membership extension or verify every required function in current documentation before relying on Groups alone.

Operational checklist before launch

  • Base membership plugin and extension are installed, licensed, and compatible.
  • Product copy states whether pricing is per seat or per team.
  • Minimum, maximum, and included seat counts match the contract you intend to sell.
  • Owner-seat behavior is visible at checkout or in the plan explanation.
  • Invitation, registration-link, password-reset, and account-verification instructions are written for employees.
  • Managers have only the roster permissions they need.
  • Failed-payment, pause, cancellation, expiration, renewal, and seat-reduction outcomes are documented.
  • Staging tests cover a new team, a partially used team, a full team, an employee removal, and an administrator correction.

Which option should you use?

Use Teams for WooCommerce Memberships when WooCommerce Memberships already powers the site’s access plans and you want WooCommerce product and subscription workflows. Use PMPro Group Accounts when Paid Memberships Pro is already the membership system and its parent/child model fits your sales process. Use Groups for permissions only when your requirements stop at organizing users and controlling access; do not treat it as a proven replacement for a group-commerce workflow.
