You can make ebooks you own as files searchable and available through a library you host yourself. That does not automatically free Kindle purchases from Amazon: DRM-protected titles remain limited to Kindle apps and devices under Amazon’s policy. A low-stress migration starts with an inventory, a library tool, and a small test batch—not a new e-reader.

What “leaving Kindle” can—and cannot—mean

A self-hosted library can give you control over organizing and accessing ebook files that you possess, including personal documents and eligible DRM-free downloads. It cannot, by itself, make account-bound or DRM-protected Kindle purchases portable. Amazon says DRM limits access to Kindle apps and devices. Treat the library and the Amazon account as separate parts of your reading setup.

This distinction matters before you buy hardware or move a whole collection. A book appearing in your Kindle library does not establish that you can download it as a file or read it on another device.

Audit your collection before migrating

Make an inventory and sort titles by what you can actually access. Keep the original files and a separate copy of any files you intend to import.

  • Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
  • Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.

  • Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
  • Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
  • Files you already possess: ebooks and documents stored on your computer or other drives can be organized in a library manager. Check that the files open and that you know where the originals are stored.
  • Amazon titles with an eligible DRM-free download: Amazon’s KDP policy says eligible DRM-free purchases can be downloaded as EPUB or PDF, subject to publisher choices and purchaser eligibility. Its page states that verified purchasers can download confirmed DRM-free books effective January 20, 2026. For DRM-free books published before December 9, 2025, the publisher must explicitly confirm the download option. Kindle Unlimited and other borrowed books cannot be downloaded as EPUB or PDF, even if DRM-free. See Amazon’s DRM policy and check each title’s actual download options.
  • DRM-protected Kindle purchases: Amazon’s stated policy limits these to Kindle apps and devices. A self-hosted server or alternate reader does not change that restriction.

Keep the distinction practical: only call a title portable after you have confirmed that its file is available and in a format your intended reader supports. This article does not provide DRM-removal instructions.

Choose the library layer that fits your workflow

Two useful approaches are a desktop-centered library manager with optional browser access, or a web-first self-hosted catalog. Neither is a universal winner; the right choice depends on how you prefer to add, organize, and read books.

calibre A desktop-first collection you want to manage locally Library management, format conversion, device transfer, and a content server for browser access are documented in the calibre manual. The manual version shown in the cited documentation is 9.15.0; check the current manual for the version in use. Its core workflow is desktop library management rather than a web-first catalog.
BookLore / BookOrbit A self-hosted web library and catalog Project documentation describes web reading, library storage, BookDrop intake, OPDS, and Kobo/KOReader integrations. Its getting-started page lists Docker Compose, 2 GB RAM, 10 GB or more of storage, and an internet connection for metadata fetching. It involves setting up and maintaining a server. The project repository identifies BookOrbit as the active-development successor, so check the project’s current naming and migration information before choosing it.

BookLore’s listed requirements are a project baseline, not proof that every setup needs newly purchased hardware. If you already have a computer or other suitable device that can stay available as a server, assess that first. The project’s getting-started documentation explains its setup, and the project repository carries current project information.

Decide how each device will reach the library

Browser access

calibre’s content server lets you browse a library through a web browser. BookLore documents a web-based library and reader. Browser access can be convenient on devices with a usable browser, but do not assume that a stock Kindle can connect to every self-hosted server or read every format it serves.

OPDS and compatible reading apps

BookLore documents OPDS and integrations with Kobo and KOReader. That gives compatible apps and devices a route to a catalog, but support depends on the particular reader and setup. Confirm the integration instructions for your device before relying on it for daily reading.

USB transfer

Wired transfer can suit a local, one-off move to a supported device. Amazon says Kindle Scribe and Kindle devices released in 2024 require an app such as Send to Kindle for USB file transfers. Because support varies by model, confirm the transfer method for your exact Kindle before preparing a batch. A cable alone is not a guaranteed transfer solution.

An alternate reader such as KOReader

KOReader is an ebook-reader application, not a library server or DRM-unlocking tool. The project describes support for PDF, DjVu, EPUB, FB2, and other formats, and lists Cervantes, Kindle, Kobo, PocketBook, and Android devices. Its documentation also says DRM-protected books are unsupported. See the KOReader project page for supported devices and formats.

Kindle installation needs particular care: it depends on the model, firmware, and jailbreak or launcher conditions. A project listing that includes Kindle does not mean KOReader installs on every Kindle in its stock configuration. Consult the project’s Kindle installation documentation for model-specific conditions before changing a device.

Migrate in a small, reversible batch

  1. Create a durable library folder. Choose a location you can back up, then keep original files separate from any working copy or converted versions.
  2. Install and configure one library layer. Use calibre for a desktop-centered collection or follow BookLore’s current getting-started guide if you want a self-hosted web catalog. Avoid configuring several systems at once.
  3. Import a few known-portable books. Start with files you already possess or Amazon titles whose eligible DRM-free downloads you have confirmed. Do not treat the entire Kindle account as a transferable file collection.
  4. Check the result on the intended device. Confirm the book opens, the format is supported, and its title and author metadata are sensible. If you use a server or app integration, verify that the device can reach the library through that route.
  5. Test your reading workflow before scaling up. Check how you will transfer or retrieve the next book and whether your chosen method suits your actual device. Do not assume reading progress will synchronize between Amazon and a separate library.
  6. Back up the library folder and configuration you rely on. A server makes files accessible; it is not a substitute for a separate backup. Verify that a copy can be restored before depending on the setup.

Keep the boundary clear after migration

A self-hosted library is a durable home for files you possess; it is not a replacement license for every book in your Kindle account. Keep using Kindle apps or devices for titles Amazon restricts to that ecosystem, and use the self-hosted catalog for portable files. That split lets you reduce dependence on Amazon for your own documents and eligible downloads without making a replacement e-reader carry more responsibility than it can.
