To see which bots and AI crawlers are reaching an Angular site, read the access logs of the infrastructure that receives the traffic: your web server, hosting platform, or CDN. Search those logs for crawler tokens such as Googlebot, GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, and ChatGPT-User. Angular’s own code is usually not the place to find the full request trail, and it sees only some requests depending on how the app is rendered.

Why Angular code is the wrong place to start

Angular’s rendering mode decides how much of a request the framework touches. A crawler that asks for your homepage may receive a pre-built HTML file, a server-rendered page, or just the JavaScript shell that a browser then fills in. Only in the second case does Angular code run on the server for that request. The table below shows what each mode means for logging.

Rendering mode Where the HTML is produced What Angular code sees per request Where to look first
Client-side rendering (CSR, the default) In the visitor’s browser Nothing on the server beyond serving assets. Angular’s documentation says that with client-side rendering, “the server does not need to do any work to render a page beyond serving static JavaScript assets.” Web server, host, or CDN logs. A crawler that does not run JavaScript may fetch only the app shell and never trigger rendering work.
Server-side rendering (SSR) On the server, for each request The request is available to app code through Angular’s REQUEST injection token, which exposes the Web API Request including headers. Infrastructure logs first, then app-level instrumentation if you need framework context.
Prerendering (static generation) At build time, as static HTML files Nothing per request. Angular documents REQUEST as null during build processes and static generation. Web server or CDN logs only. Crawler hits appear as ordinary file requests.

In practice, the infrastructure log is the one place every request is recorded, whatever the rendering mode. App-level code can add detail for SSR routes, but it cannot be your only source.

Step 1: Identify the layer that receives external traffic

Requests usually pass through several layers before they reach Angular. Work out which of these your site uses:

  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
  • A CDN or web application firewall (WAF), such as Cloudflare, Fastly, or a similar service
  • A load balancer
  • A web server or host, such as Nginx, Apache, or a managed platform’s request logs
  • The Angular runtime, if SSR is enabled

Use the log at the earliest layer that sees external traffic. Then confirm that its retention covers the period you want to investigate. Logs are often rotated after a few days or weeks, and a crawler spike from last month may already be gone.

Step 2: Search the logs for crawler tokens

Crawler identities appear in the user-agent field. Search that field case-insensitively, and keep the timestamp, request path, status code, source IP, and user-agent together so each hit can be interpreted later.

  1. On a typical Nginx server using the default combined log format, search the current log:

    zgrep -i -E "Googlebot|GPTBot|OAI-SearchBot|ChatGPT-User" /var/log/nginx/access.log*
  3. On Apache, the default access log is usually at /var/log/apache2/access.log on Debian-based systems, or /var/log/httpd/access_log on Red Hat-based systems. Run the same search against that file.

  4. On a CDN, use its request-log export. Cloudflare documents Logpull as an API that returns data about the connecting client, the request path through the Cloudflare network, and the response from the origin web server. Which fields and retention periods you get depends on your Cloudflare account and setup, so check the Cloudflare Logpull documentation for your configuration.

  5. On a managed hosting platform, open its request or access log view and filter by the same tokens. The field names and export options vary by provider, so confirm that the log includes user-agent, source IP, path, and status before relying on it.

If a log line shows a crawler token, read the path as well as the name. A request for /robots.txt tells you something different from a request for a product page or an Angular route.

Which crawler is which

Do not count all AI crawlers as one group. The site owner’s options differ by crawler, and so does what each request means. The names below are the ones documented by OpenAI and Google at the time of writing (October 2026). Check the official pages before you build filters, because user-agent strings and IP ranges change.

Name in logs Documented purpose What to keep in mind
OAI-SearchBot Surfaces websites in ChatGPT search. OpenAI’s crawler documentation is the reference for this token. Opting out affects whether your pages appear in ChatGPT search answers. Sites can still appear as navigational links.
GPTBot Crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI’s generative AI foundation models. OpenAI documents a separate user-agent and IP range for this crawler, so it can be separated from search traffic.
ChatGPT-User Visits pages in response to certain user actions in ChatGPT or Custom GPTs. OpenAI says it is not an automatic web crawler. Because these fetches are user-triggered, robots.txt rules may not apply. Do not count it as equivalent to search indexing.
Googlebot Smartphone and Googlebot Desktop Google Search crawling. Both are identifiable by their request user-agent. Both use the same Googlebot token in robots.txt. Google says most Google Search crawling uses the mobile crawler. See the Googlebot documentation.
Google-Extended A robots.txt control token for certain uses of content Google has crawled. It is not a separate HTTP user-agent, so it never appears as a log entry. It does not affect inclusion in Google Search and is not a Search ranking signal. Look for the regular Google user-agent strings instead, as described in Google’s common crawlers documentation.
GoogleOther A generic crawler used by various Google product teams for publicly accessible content and internal research and development. Do not report it as a Google Search visit.

Verify a crawler before you trust its name

A user-agent string is a label that anyone can send. Google explicitly warns that its user-agent is often spoofed. A request that claims to be Googlebot therefore needs a check of its source IP before you allow it, block it, or report it as genuine.

Google’s documented manual method for a logged request works as follows:

  1. Run a reverse DNS lookup on the request’s source IP. For example, using the documentation address 203.0.113.10 (replace it with an IP from your own log):

    dig -x 203.0.113.10 +short
  2. Confirm the returned hostname ends in googlebot.com, google.com, or googleusercontent.com.

  3. Forward-resolve that hostname:

    dig crawl-203-0-113-10.googlebot.com +short
  4. Confirm the forward lookup returns the original source IP. If it does not, treat the request as unverified.

For high request volumes, Google documents matching source IPs against its published crawler IP ranges instead of running DNS for every request. The Google verification documentation describes both methods. OpenAI also publishes IP data alongside its crawler descriptions on its bots page. Consult that page for the current ranges before you maintain an allowlist.

Read identity and path together

A crawler identity is only part of the picture. Pair it with the path and status code:

  • Full HD 1080p video calling and recording at 30 fps. You'll make a strong impression with this PC webcam that features crisp, clearly detailed, and vibrantly colored video
  • Requests to /robots.txt show that a crawler is checking its rules. OpenAI notes that its crawlers can mark robots.txt requests in their user-agent, which is useful when logs omit paths.
  • Requests to content pages show what a crawler is actually fetching. Compare these with your sitemap and internal links to see whether it is following normal paths.
  • Repeated 404 or 403 responses can point to a stale route, a rule in your firewall, or a crawler that is probing paths it cannot access.
  • Requests that only hit the Angular shell suggest a client-rendered app where the crawler did not run JavaScript. Content that only appears after rendering may not be reached by that crawler at all.

Some hosting services redact or hide the user-agent, path, or IP fields. If your log view removes them, you cannot make these distinctions, so check the field list before you depend on a given log.

Using Angular-level instrumentation

Angular-level logging is a supplement, not a replacement. The REQUEST token gives SSR code access to the current request, including headers. It is null during browser rendering and during prerendering, so code that depends on it will not run for those cases. Add it only where your app runs SSR, and expect the behaviour to vary by hosting adapter. The logic is simple: if you can read the crawler’s user-agent in your server code, record it along with the path, but still rely on the infrastructure log as the complete record.

When no crawler visits appear

An empty result does not always mean no crawler has visited. Work through these checks in order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm you are reading the log at the right layer. If a CDN answers a request from cache, the origin server may have no record of it.
  2. Check whether a CDN or WAF filters or blocks requests before they reach your origin. Blocked requests may appear only in the security logs.
  3. Confirm retention covers the window you are investigating.
  4. Search for the crawler’s token case-insensitively, and check that your log format includes the user-agent field at all.
  5. Remember that a crawler may simply not have requested your site in the period you searched. Absence in one log stream is not proof that no request reached any upstream system.

Why AI crawlers may not appear in analytics

Client-side analytics scripts run only when a page is loaded and its JavaScript executes in a browser. Many automated fetches do not execute scripts, so they usually do not register in those tools. That is why server or CDN logs are the better place to look for crawler traffic. The official pages cited above do not publish a prevalence figure for AI crawler visits to Angular sites, so this article does not give one.

A practical checklist

  • Know which layers receive requests before you start searching.
  • Search the logs for crawler tokens and keep user-agent, IP, path, status, and timestamp together.
  • Treat every crawler match as a classification, not proof.
  • Verify Googlebot by reverse DNS, forward DNS, and the returned IP, or by published ranges.
  • Separate OpenAI’s search, training, and user-triggered traffic into different counts.
  • Read the path alongside the identity.
  • Use Angular’s REQUEST token only for SSR context, not as your complete visitor log.

With the right log in hand, you can see which crawlers are reaching your Angular site, what they request, and whether their claimed identities hold up.
