You can usually see a deleted WhatsApp message again only if it was included in a backup made before it was deleted. Restoring that backup replaces your current chat history with the saved snapshot, so first check its date and consider which newer messages may be missing. WhatsApp says it cannot restore deleted messages for you because it does not store chat history on its servers.
First, identify what “deleted” means
The recovery options depend on how the message disappeared:
- You chose Delete for me: The message is removed from your copy, but it does not delete the other participants’ copies. If someone else still has it, you can ask them to share it.
- Someone chose Delete for everyone: WhatsApp replaces the message with a deletion notice. A recipient may have read or saved the content before it was removed; deletion does not guarantee nobody saw it.
- You cleared the chat: Restoring may bring it back if the latest backup was made before you cleared it.
- A disappearing-message timer expired: Backup behavior is separate; a message included in a backup before it disappears is deleted when you restore from that backup.

A backup is a snapshot, not a tool for retrieving one message selectively. It can help only if the message was present when the backup was made. Messages sent or received after that snapshot may not be included in the restored history. Check the backup time and account before starting.

Restore WhatsApp chats on iPhone
- Check the backup first: Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup. Note the last backup time and size. Continue only if the backup is from before the message disappeared and you accept that newer messages may be absent after restoration.
- Confirm the account: Make sure you can use the same phone number and Apple ID associated with the backup.
- Reinstall WhatsApp: Uninstall and reinstall the app. During setup, verify your phone number and Apple ID, then choose Restore Chat History when prompted.
WhatsApp’s iPhone guide says messages sent or received after the latest backup cannot be restored from it. Its troubleshooting guidance says a new iCloud backup overwrites the previous one, so do not assume an older snapshot remains available. Restore WhatsApp chats on Android
- Check the Google Account: Confirm which Google Account is associated with the WhatsApp backup and that you can access it. Check that the backup predates deletion before proceeding.
- Reinstall WhatsApp: Uninstall and reinstall the app, then complete initial setup with the same phone number and the relevant Google Account.
- Restore when prompted: Choose the restore option during setup if WhatsApp finds the backup. WhatsApp’s documented process presents restoration during initial setup, rather than as an always-available restore control in Settings.
WhatsApp’s Android troubleshooting page says one backup is stored per WhatsApp number in the associated Google Account and a new backup overwrites the old one. Check the account and backup before reinstalling: a backup that is too recent may not contain the deleted message, while restoring an older snapshot may omit newer chats. If someone deleted the message for everyone
There is no WhatsApp setting that reverses another person’s “Delete for everyone” action. WhatsApp says deletion syncs across online devices where the user is logged in. The recipient may nevertheless have seen the message before deletion, and an iOS recipient may still have media saved in Photos. If you need the information, ask the sender or another participant whether they can provide it; that depends on them having retained a copy.

WhatsApp’s Help Center also lists a short undo window for “Delete for me” and a time limit for requesting “Delete for everyone”; the page’s current guidance, checked on 2026-10-03, gives five seconds to undo “Delete for me” and two days to request deletion for everyone. If you cleared the chat
A cleared chat may return if your latest backup was created before you cleared it. Restoring is still a snapshot operation: messages received after that backup will not be part of the restored history. WhatsApp describes this condition in its guide to clearing chats.
If a disappearing-message timer expired
WhatsApp’s available disappearing-message durations are 24 hours, 7 days, and 90 days. A message may be included in a backup made before it disappears, but WhatsApp says that message is deleted when a user restores from that backup. That behavior is not a promise that restoring can recover an expired disappearing message. See WhatsApp’s explanation of disappearing messages.

What to check before restoring
- Does the backup date precede the deletion or chat clearing?
- Is the message likely to have been included in that backup?
- Can you access the same phone number and the Apple ID or Google Account used for the backup?
- Are you willing to lose messages that arrived after the backup snapshot?
- Could another participant provide the message or saved media instead?
Do not treat a third-party recovery app as a proven alternative: the WhatsApp guidance cited here does not assess such apps’ effectiveness or privacy practices.
