Create a dedicated album in the Photos app, then add the ID card pictures already in your library. You can open that album whenever you need to view them together. An album organizes photos; it is not a separate or protected copy.
Put your ID photos in one album
- Open Photos, tap Collections, then tap Albums.
- Tap the add control and choose New Album.
- Enter a name you will recognize, such as ID cards.
- Select the existing ID card photos you want to include, including separate front and back images, then create the album.
Apple’s guide to creating and working with photo albums describes albums as a way to organize items in your photo library. Adding a picture to an album does not remove it from the library or make another copy.

USB Flash Drive for iPhone/iPad, MFi Certified 3in1, 256GB, Silver | $29.98 | Buy on Amazon |
Find an ID picture you cannot locate
In Photos, tap Search and try words visible on the card, the name of the issuing institution, a place, or an approximate date. Apple says Photos can search by date, place, category, events, and text such as an email address or phone number. Check likely matches yourself before adding them to the album.
Apple’s Photos search guide explains the available search options. Live Text can recognize and let you select text in photos, but recognition varies by language and region and is not guaranteed for every image or card field. Treat search as a way to find likely pictures, not as automatic ID-card sorting.

Understand what an album does—and does not do
An album is a convenient collection of items from your Photos library, not a privacy lock or an independent backup. If you delete an image from Photos, it is removed from albums too. Apple says deleted items can be recovered from Recently Deleted for 30 days; see its instructions for deleting or recovering photos.
If you use iCloud Photos, Apple says albums are stored in iCloud and stay up to date and accessible on devices signed in to the same Apple Account. This is syncing across those devices, not a separate backup guarantee. See Apple’s album guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose Hidden for more privacy in Photos
If you want the pictures to be less visible in Photos, move them to the Hidden album rather than relying on a regular album. Apple says hidden photos do not appear in the library, other albums, or the Photos widget. On supported software, the Hidden album is locked by default and requires authentication. With iCloud Photos enabled, hiding a photo on one device hides it on your other devices too. Details are in Apple’s guide to hiding photos.
Hidden changes where the photos appear in Photos; it does not turn them into a digital credential for presenting to an organization.
Photos album or Wallet: which should you use?
| Option | Best for | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Photos album | Viewing selected ID card pictures together | Organizes existing library images; it is not a privacy lock or separate backup. |
| Hidden album | Keeping images out of the regular Photos views | Provides additional visibility protection in Photos; authentication and availability depend on supported software. |
| Wallet | Presenting an eligible digital ID at supported checkpoints, businesses, apps, or websites | Apple documents support for some IDs, including participating U.S. state driver’s licenses and state IDs. Eligibility depends on jurisdiction and device, and Wallet does not collect your existing ID photos from Photos. |
Apple’s digital ID in Wallet information covers supported IDs and where they can be used. For saved pictures, use a Photos album; use Wallet only if you mean a usable digital credential and your ID and location are supported.
