The quickest way to see a YouTube thumbnail is to open the video page, then right-click the preview image on a computer or long-press it on a phone. Choose Open image in new tab or Copy image address. For a direct, larger rendition, put the video’s 11-character ID into https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/RESOLUTION.jpg and try maxresdefault.jpg first.
What you are looking at
A YouTube watch page already shows the thumbnail as the video’s preview. The image may be replaced by the playing video once playback starts, so pause or reload the page if you need to inspect the preview itself. A thumbnail is an image file; opening its image address displays that file without the surrounding YouTube page.
YouTube describes custom video and Shorts thumbnails as a quick snapshot that helps an audience preview content. Seeing or saving the file does not, by itself, give you permission to republish it. If you plan to use another creator’s image, obtain permission or rely on a licence or legal exception that applies to your use.

Method 1: Open the thumbnail from the YouTube page
Desktop browsers
- Open the video’s watch page on YouTube.
- Before playing the video, move the pointer over the preview image.
- Right-click the image and choose Open image in new tab. Browser wording can differ; Copy image address copies the same direct URL without opening it.
- In the new tab, use the browser’s normal save-image command if you need a local copy.
If the context menu belongs to the video player rather than the image, right-click a different part of the preview, pause the video, or use the direct-URL method below.

iPhone, iPad and Android
- Open the watch page in a browser rather than relying on an embedded player in another app.
- Long-press the preview image.
- Choose the browser’s option to open the image, copy its address, or download/save it. The exact label depends on the browser and operating system.
Some mobile YouTube apps do not expose an image-address command. Open the same video URL in Safari, Chrome or another full browser when you need the file URL.
Method 2: Build a full-size thumbnail URL
YouTube’s image host follows a predictable pattern:
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/RESOLUTION.jpg
Find the video ID
- For
youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID, copy the value afterv=(normally 11 characters). - For
youtu.be/VIDEO_ID, copy the final path segment before any query string. - For
youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID, copy the segment after/shorts/.
Do not include https://, the channel name, or extra parameters in the ID. For example, if the ID is abc123XYZ89, begin with:

Try the available resolution names
maxresdefault.jpg— the largest commonly available video rendition.sddefault.jpghqdefault.jpgmqdefault.jpgdefault.jpg— the smallest standard fallback.
maxresdefault is not created for every video. A missing or generic-looking result does not necessarily mean the video ID is wrong; replace the filename with the next fallback and try again. The direct URL can also be copied into an image editor, a download tool, or an HTML <img> element.
Use the URL in a page or script
For a web page, replace the ID and resolution in this example:

For a one-off download, open the working URL in your browser and use Save image as. A direct image response may have a different filename from the title shown on YouTube; rename it locally if useful.

Method 3: Retrieve thumbnail metadata with the YouTube Data API
Applications handling many videos should read the video resource’s snippet.thumbnails object instead of guessing which rendition exists. The API can return thumbnail objects named default, medium, high, standard and, for some videos, maxres. Each available object can include a url, width and height.

These are metadata values supplied by the API; an individual resource may omit an object. Your code should choose the highest-priority object that actually exists rather than assuming maxres is present. The API is the most dependable approach when you need dimensions, availability checks, or a repeatable workflow for a list of videos.
Fallback logic
- Request the video’s
snippetresource and inspectsnippet.thumbnails. - Check
maxres, thenstandard,high,mediumanddefault. - Use the first object containing a URL; record its width and height with your stored image.
- If no thumbnail object is returned, check that the video ID is valid and that your API request is authorized and addressed to the intended resource.
Which method should you choose?

Direct URL construction is fast, but a guessed maxresdefault URL can fail when that rendition does not exist. The API costs more setup but lets software select an available object deliberately.
How to download without losing quality
- Open the highest-resolution URL that actually returns the intended thumbnail.
- Confirm that the image is the creator’s design, not a generic placeholder.
- Save the original file rather than taking a screenshot of the browser tab.
- Keep the source video URL and creator information with your local copy.
A downloaded image remains subject to copyright, trademark and platform terms. Personal viewing and technical retrieval are different questions from publishing the image in a site, advertisement, presentation or product.
Troubleshooting
The image is missing or returns an error
Replace maxresdefault.jpg with sddefault.jpg, hqdefault.jpg, mqdefault.jpg or default.jpg. The largest rendition is optional.

The URL shows a generic image
Check every character of the 11-character ID, remove query parameters, and verify that the video is still available. A private, removed or region-restricted video may not provide the same public image response.
Right-click does not show “Open image in new tab”
You may be clicking the player controls or an overlay. Pause the video, move to an uncluttered part of the preview, or copy the ID and build the direct URL manually.
The mobile app will not save the image
Use the watch-page URL in a mobile browser and long-press the preview. App menus vary and may not expose the underlying image address.

This is expected for videos without that rendition. Select the highest available object from standard, high, medium or default; do not treat the missing field as a failed request.
The saved file looks blurry
You may have saved a small rendition or a browser screenshot. Recheck the URL filename, prefer an available API object with larger dimensions, and save the image file itself.
