The strongest built-in way to protect a WhatsApp account is to enable its optional two-step verification, keep the registration code private, and inspect Linked devices regularly. Two-step verification adds a separate secret after phone-number registration; linked-device checks let you end sessions you do not recognize. Menu names can differ by app version and language, and WhatsApp is moving from a six-digit PIN to a password, so follow the wording shown in your app.
What the two WhatsApp security checks actually do
WhatsApp uses two different secrets for two different jobs. During registration or recovery, WhatsApp sends a six-digit registration code by SMS or an automated phone call to prove that you control the account’s phone number. Two-step verification adds a separate PIN, or a password where the newer wording is available, that WhatsApp may request when the number is registered again.
These credentials are not interchangeable. A person who obtains the SMS registration code can register the number on another phone, while a person who knows only the two-step secret does not automatically receive the registration code. Treat both as confidential. WhatsApp’s registration guidance states: "Remember: Never share your 6-digit registration code or password with anyone."
Why linked-device checks matter
WhatsApp can keep sessions open on computers, tablets, and other supported devices after you link them. An attacker who briefly accessed your unlocked phone, or who persuaded you to link an unwanted device, may continue reading or sending messages through that session. The Linked devices screen is therefore a session inventory, not another password setting.

Turn on two-step verification
The option is available in WhatsApp’s account or security settings. The exact path and wording can vary by operating system, release, and language. Use the following sequence as a guide and choose the labels that match your screen.
- Open WhatsApp settings. On many phones, Android users reach settings from the three-dot menu; iPhone users generally open the Settings tab.
- Open Account or Security. Look for an entry named Two-step verification, Two-step verification password, or a similar security label.
- Choose to enable or set up the feature. WhatsApp may still call the secret a six-digit PIN, while some accounts are being moved to a password-based prompt.
- Create the secret. Use a value that is not your phone unlock code, SIM PIN, birthday, or another easily guessed number or word. Do not reuse a password that protects email, banking, or another important service.
- Enter it again when asked. This confirmation catches typing errors before the setting is saved.
- Add and verify an email address if WhatsApp offers the option. A verified address can support an email verification code in a specific new-phone sign-in scenario, explained below. It does not replace control of the registered phone number.
- Save the setting and record the secret safely. A password manager is preferable to an unprotected note or a screenshot in your photo library. Never send the secret to a contact, supposed WhatsApp employee, or technical-support account.
Two-step verification is optional, but enabling it creates an additional check after number registration. If the app displays a password prompt instead of a PIN prompt, do not assume the feature failed; WhatsApp is upgrading the older six-digit design and not every account necessarily shows the same wording at the same time.
Choose a secret you can recover
A strong secret must be difficult for someone who knows you to guess and still be available when WhatsApp requests it months later. A password manager can generate and store a unique password. If you use a PIN, avoid repeated digits and common sequences. Keep any recovery email account protected with its own unique password and multi-factor authentication, because access to that mailbox could affect the email-based step.

- Open WhatsApp.
- Open Linked devices. On Android this is commonly in the three-dot menu; on iPhone it is commonly under the Settings tab. If your release places it under Account or another heading, use the in-app search or the closest matching security menu.
- Read every listed session. Note the device type or browser label and the last-used information displayed by your app. A familiar computer may appear with a generic browser or operating-system name.
- Open any session you do not recognize. Check its details before acting if you are unsure whether it belongs to you or a family member.
- Select Log out. This ends that linked session. Repeat the action for each unfamiliar entry rather than assuming one sign-out removes all devices.
- Recheck the list. Confirm that the unwanted session has disappeared. If it returns, change the security of the phone and the accounts used to access it, then contact WhatsApp through its official support channel.
Do not use unofficial websites, modified WhatsApp builds, or third-party services that ask you to scan a QR code or provide a registration code. Linking through an untrusted service can create the very session you are trying to remove.
What WhatsApp cannot tell you
The linked-device list does not identify the individual behind a session. WhatsApp says it cannot provide who accessed the account or the exact time and location of access. A device label can help you recognize a computer you own, but it is not forensic proof of a person’s identity.
How to decide whether a linked device is legitimate
Use context rather than one clue. A browser name may be unfamiliar because you changed browsers, reinstalled an operating system, or linked a work computer. Conversely, a familiar label can still be unauthorized if someone used your unlocked phone to create the session.

- Compare the listed device with computers and tablets you actually use.
- Ask household or workplace users only through a trusted conversation, not through a message that could be coming from the suspicious session.
- Pay attention to a new session appearing immediately after a QR-code scan, a support request, or an unexpected message about account verification.
- If you cannot confidently explain an entry, log it out. You can link your own device again later.
Recover a WhatsApp account if someone else took it over
Recovery depends on whether you still control the mobile number associated with the account. Do not negotiate with the person who claims to have taken the account and do not forward any code they request.

If you still receive calls or texts on the number
- Install or open the official WhatsApp application on your phone. Avoid modified clients and unofficial download pages.
- Enter your own phone number. Use the international format requested by the app, including the correct country code.
- Request the six-digit registration code by SMS or phone call. Wait for the normal delivery process instead of repeatedly guessing codes.
- Enter the code only in WhatsApp. Never tell it to another person, even if they claim to be support, a friend, or a family member.
- Complete the registration. WhatsApp says that re-registering the number automatically logs out other devices.
- Review Linked devices after access returns. Remove anything you still do not recognize, using the review procedure above.
- Warn contacts if impersonation is possible. Tell them through another channel that messages sent during the takeover may not have come from you, especially requests for money, codes, or urgent action.
Re-registration proves control of the phone number; it does not reveal who used the account or provide a historical access report. Preserve suspicious messages or screenshots if you need to report fraud to a carrier, employer, bank, or law-enforcement agency.
If WhatsApp asks for a two-step secret you do not know
An attacker may have enabled two-step verification or changed the secret. If WhatsApp requests an unknown PIN during recovery, the official recovery instruction is to wait seven days and try again. The seven-day period is a procedural wait, not a guarantee that an attacker will be identified or that messages sent during the interval can be recovered.
Keep control of the phone number during the wait. Do not share newly received registration codes, and ignore anyone offering to bypass the waiting period in exchange for money or information. Once WhatsApp lets you back in, enable the available security options, inspect linked devices, and notify contacts if the account may have impersonated you.

A verified email address can provide an email verification code when you sign in to an existing WhatsApp account on a new phone, if the address was added and verified in settings. WhatsApp’s guidance still requires an active SIM for the associated phone number to be in the device.

Email therefore supports a particular sign-in flow; it is not a substitute for the number in lost-number recovery. If your SIM or phone number is lost, contact your mobile carrier and request a replacement SIM or equivalent service with the same number. Email alone cannot reclaim a number that you no longer control.
Keep the recovery email secure
- Verify that the address shown in WhatsApp is yours and current.
- Protect the mailbox with a unique password and its own multi-factor authentication.
- Do not approve an unexpected email sign-in or verification request.
- Remove an old address if you no longer control that mailbox, then add and verify a replacement when WhatsApp permits it.
Registration code versus two-step secret

Build a routine that catches problems early
Security settings help most when they are checked before an emergency. Choose a schedule that matches how often you use WhatsApp and how many devices you link.
- After every new QR-code link: open Linked devices immediately and confirm that the new entry is the one you intended.
- After lending someone your unlocked phone: check the list and review any security notifications.
- Monthly or quarterly: remove old computers and tablets that you no longer use. WhatsApp recommends regular checks; the interval is your choice.
- After a lost or replaced phone: re-register the number on the replacement device as soon as the carrier restores service, then inspect sessions.
- Whenever a contact reports a strange message: stop responding to requests for money or codes, check your account, and warn other contacts if needed.
Troubleshooting common security problems
The two-step option is missing
Update WhatsApp from your phone’s official app store, confirm that you are looking in Account or Security settings, and search for both “two-step verification” and “password.” Labels differ by release and locale, and the PIN-to-password transition means two accounts may not show identical wording. If the option remains absent, use WhatsApp’s official help and support route for your platform rather than a third-party guide that asks for your code.
You forgot your PIN or password
Use the reset or recovery choice shown by WhatsApp. If you are recovering a compromised account and WhatsApp presents a secret you do not know, follow the documented seven-day wait instead of guessing repeatedly or paying a supposed recovery service. A verified email may help only where WhatsApp offers that email code flow.

An unknown device keeps appearing
Log out the session, then secure the phone itself: change the device passcode, install system and WhatsApp updates, remove unfamiliar applications, and check whether anyone else can unlock the phone. Re-register the WhatsApp number if you suspect the account has been taken over. Avoid scanning QR codes from unsolicited messages or websites.
You no longer have the phone number
Contact your mobile provider for a replacement SIM or restoration of the same number. A verified email does not replace number access for this situation. Once service is restored, complete WhatsApp registration with the SMS or call code and then review linked devices.
A contact asks for your registration code
Refuse and stop the conversation. A genuine contact does not need your code to message you. Report or block the account if appropriate, and check Linked devices for an unexpected session.

- Your contacts know how to verify urgent requests if the account is ever impersonated.
