To secure photography gear in a moving vehicle, pack it so it cannot slide, roll, tip, or enter the passenger area, then restrain it to suitable vehicle anchor points. Use stable placement and blocking as well as straps or other appropriate restraints; a load that feels solid while parked can still move during braking or a swerve.
Why camera gear needs more than a snug fit
Cases, light stands, poles, and backdrop crossbars can shift when a vehicle brakes, turns, or hits a bump. Weight alone does not make cargo safe once a vehicle is moving. The UK Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) puts the principle plainly: “All loads carried on vehicles must be secure regardless of: what vehicle they’re on; the size or type of the load; the length of the journey.” Its guidance also emphasizes that no single method works for every load and vehicle (DVSA load-securing guidance).
There is also a road-safety risk beyond damage to your equipment. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that objects in the road are associated with about 850 fatalities and almost 19,000 injuries a year, and that passenger vehicles account for 73% of vehicles in those crashes. The NHTSA page does not specify the year underlying those approximate figures, so they should not be read as estimates for a particular year (NHTSA unsecured-load safety information).

Load the vehicle so equipment cannot shift
Choose a contained cargo area
Use a space where cases and stands can be kept away from the driver’s controls and where a shifted item cannot obstruct visibility or reach occupants. If the vehicle has a cargo barrier or bulkhead, load and restrain items so they remain on the cargo side. Do not assume that a particular car, van, or trunk layout is safe without checking how the load is contained.

Put heavy cases low and stable
Place heavier camera or lighting cases low on the cargo floor, with broad, stable surfaces down. Keep cases from stacking in a way that lets them topple. Fill gaps with secured blocking or pack items tightly enough that they cannot build momentum and slide; loose bags or accessories are not reliable blocking.
Keep stands and backdrop pieces from rolling or projecting
Bundle light stands, poles, and crossbars so they cannot roll independently. Position long pieces along the vehicle’s cargo area, not where they can project into the passenger compartment. Restrain the bundle against a suitable vehicle structure or anchor point, and prevent its ends from shifting forward, backward, or sideways.

Protect cameras and lenses inside the secured load
Carry cameras and lenses in protective cases with padding and closures in place. Arrange them to avoid crushing, abrasion, and empty spaces that allow movement inside a case. Keep straps and hard hardware off delicate surfaces. Where a restraint might rub against or cut an item, use suitable edge protection; federal commercial-vehicle rules address protecting cargo from abrasion or cutting by tiedowns, though they do not specifically cover camera equipment (49 CFR Part 393, Subpart I).

Use a combination of stable placement, gap-filling or blocking, and suitable tiedowns or barriers. Secure straps to vehicle anchor points or structures designed to take the load—not to trim, handles, or fittings of uncertain strength. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) rules for covered commercial vehicles identify vehicle structure, blocking, dunnage, shoring bars, and tiedowns among the means used to immobilize cargo (49 CFR Part 393, Subpart I).

Before using a strap, inspect it and its hardware for damage or weakening, and check that the vehicle attachment points are appropriate and in usable condition. Do not use a frayed, cut, or otherwise damaged restraint. A cargo net can help contain smaller accessories, but it should not be treated as the sole restraint for heavy cases or long stands.
Choose tie-down straps for the actual load
When comparing vehicle cargo tie-down straps, check the stated working-load rating, hardware compatibility with the vehicle anchors, adjustability for the items being carried, and whether the strap can be secured against loosening. The right choice depends on the cargo and vehicle; without those details, no specific strap rating is appropriate.

For covered commercial motor vehicles under the applicable U.S. federal rules, the aggregate working-load limit of the securement system for an article or group of articles must be at least one-half the cargo weight under the conditions specified by the regulation. That is a rule for its defined commercial-vehicle context, not a universal formula for buying straps for a passenger car (49 CFR Part 393, Subpart I).
Check the load before and during the trip
- After loading: Check that cases, bundled stands, and accessories cannot shift, roll, or tip. Inspect each restraint and its attachment point.
- Before driving: Ask what would happen to each item during sudden braking or over a bump. If an item could strike an occupant, block visibility, or reach the driver’s controls, reposition or secure it.
- During the trip: Recheck the load when it is safe to stop, especially after harsh braking or swerving. Tighten or rearrange anything that has moved before continuing.
NHTSA advises drivers to consider what would happen to a load under sudden braking or over a bump and to check it before driving (NHTSA unsecured-load safety information). DVSA guidance likewise recommends regular checks, with particular attention after harsh braking or swerving (DVSA load-securing guidance).

Know which rules apply to your vehicle
FMCSA cargo-securement rules apply to covered commercial motor vehicles operating in interstate commerce, and particular cargo types can have additional requirements. They should not be assumed to set the legal requirements for an individual photographer’s passenger car. NHTSA says all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia have laws concerning unsecured loads, but the wording and penalties depend on the jurisdiction; check the current local rules for your car, van, or trailer (FMCSA cargo securement rules; NHTSA unsecured-load safety information).
In the UK, DVSA’s load-security material is guidance rather than a legal document; applicable obligations can depend on the vehicle and circumstances. Its manual was updated on 24 September 2026 (DVSA load-securing guidance).
