For Bitcoin you intend to hold for years, use an offline hardware wallet, create its wallet backup yourself, protect that backup as a private physical secret, and verify every receiving address and payment amount on the device before signing. This arrangement sharply reduces exposure to internet-based attacks compared with leaving signing keys on an exchange or an internet-connected computer, but it cannot prevent phishing, coercion, burglary, accidental disclosure, or loss of the backup.
The recovery phrase is the decisive asset. Anyone who obtains it can usually restore the wallet; if every valid copy is destroyed or lost, the Bitcoin may be unrecoverable. Treat the device and its backup as two separate security systems and plan for both to fail independently.
What a hardware wallet protects—and what it does not
A hardware wallet is a small signing device designed to keep private keys away from an ordinary computer or phone. The companion application can prepare a transaction, but the device is intended to perform the critical signing operation internally. Your computer can therefore be compromised without automatically revealing the private keys.
Recommended Free Tools
Bitcoin.org describes offline wallets as providing the highest security for savings and calls hardware wallets “the best balance between very high security and ease of use.” That benefit applies when the device is initialized correctly and the recovery backup remains secret. A hardware wallet is not an account, custodian, insurance policy, or replacement for careful operational security.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Risks reduced by offline signing
- Malware that steals keys from an always-online software wallet.
- Remote access to a computer where private keys are stored.
- Some attacks that alter a transaction on the computer before it reaches the signing device, provided you inspect the device display.
Risks that remain
- A fake website or support agent can persuade you to disclose the recovery phrase.
- A user can approve a fraudulent address if the device screen is not checked.
- Fire, water, theft, coercion, or accidental discovery can destroy or expose a physical backup.
- A forgotten passphrase, an incompatible recovery method, or an undocumented multisignature policy can block legitimate recovery.
For a long-term holding, the goal is not eliminating risk. It is separating risks so that one compromised laptop, lost phone, or failed device does not immediately destroy access.
Set up the wallet without exposing the backup
Use this sequence for a new device. Exact menu names differ by manufacturer and firmware version, so follow the current instructions displayed by the device and its official companion software.
- Obtain the device through an official or otherwise trusted channel. Inspect the package and verify authenticity using the vendor’s current procedure. There is no universal anti-counterfeit checklist that applies to every model; do not rely on a generic internet checklist.
- Initialize it yourself. The device must generate the backup during setup. Never accept a prewritten phrase, a phrase supplied by a seller, or a phrase generated on a computer. Do not allow another person to watch the screen or handle the written words.
- Record every word in order. Write the words on the supplied sheet or another offline physical medium. A wallet backup is an ordered list, not a collection of interchangeable words. Spelling, order, and any required passphrase must be exact.
- Complete the device’s backup check. Many devices ask you to select or re-enter words to prove that the record is usable. Do not skip this test; a phrase that was copied incorrectly is equivalent to no backup.
- Install the companion software only from the vendor’s current source. Check that the application recognizes the device and that account addresses shown on the computer also appear identically on the device screen.
- Create a receiving address and verify it on the device. Copying an address from a computer is not enough. Compare the complete address, or at minimum every character the device presents for verification, before using it.
- Send a small test transaction. Transfer a modest amount, wait for the expected confirmation, and verify that the receiving wallet shows it. This is operational caution rather than a required Bitcoin protocol step; no universal test amount exists.
- Move the intended long-term amount only after the test succeeds. Keep the device disconnected when it is not needed and store it somewhere that prevents casual access.
Understand the wallet backup and seed phrase
The backup, commonly called a seed phrase or recovery phrase, is the ordered secret from which the wallet derives private keys and addresses. Possession of the words generally provides the ability to restore and spend the funds without the original device. The device itself is replaceable; the backup is the recovery authority.

Word lengths and standards
| Format | Documented length | Recovery implication |
|---|---|---|
| BIP39 | 12 or 24 words | Restore with software or hardware that explicitly supports the same standard, derivation paths, and account type. |
| SLIP39 | 20 words in the cited Trezor documentation (2025) | Use a compatible SLIP39 implementation; a BIP39 restore screen may reject the words or derive different accounts. |
A correct word list entered into an incompatible wallet can look like a failed recovery even when the backup is genuine. Record the device model, backup standard, account type, and any passphrase instructions in a separate non-secret note so your future self or a legitimate successor knows which recovery procedure to follow. Do not record the words themselves in that note.
Rules for handling the words
- Never share the backup with a person, support representative, website, application, or recovery service.
- Never type it into a phone, computer, password manager, form, chat, or browser unless the device’s own documented recovery process specifically requires an entry on that device.
- Never create a screenshot, photograph, scan, email, cloud document, or other digital copy. Trezor explicitly lists screenshots, photographs, email, Dropbox, and similar copies as unsafe.
- Never enter the phrase on a website claiming to “synchronize,” “validate,” “upgrade,” or “recover” a wallet.
- Do not keep the written backup beside the device or in the same unlocked drawer. A thief who obtains both has no second barrier.
Choose a physical backup strategy
The official guidance is to keep the backup offline, private, and protected from damage or loss. No material provides a universal fire rating, water-resistance duration, or paper-failure probability, so judge a storage method by the hazards at your locations rather than by an unsupported percentage.
| Method | Advantages | Weaknesses and controls |
|---|---|---|
| Paper | Inexpensive, simple, and available during initial setup. | Can burn, become wet, fade, tear, or be discovered. Use archival-quality writing where possible and place it in a private, protected container. |
| Metal plate or letter kit | Designed to tolerate more heat and moisture than ordinary paper; durable for long storage. | Still reveals the entire secret to anyone who finds it. Protect the storage location and verify that the marking system records every word accurately. |
| Two or more secure physical locations | Reduces dependence on one building and protects against a single fire, burglary, or other local disaster. | Every additional copy is another potential disclosure point. Keep locations independent and maintain an inventory of where copies exist without writing the words in the inventory. |
| Digital copy | Easy to duplicate and search. | Not an acceptable backup for long-term security. Screenshots, photos, email, cloud drives, and similar copies can be copied remotely or exposed by account compromise. |
At minimum, maintain one protected physical copy. For a substantial holding, a second copy in a genuinely separate secure location can prevent one local disaster from becoming permanent loss. Separation does not mean handing the phrase to several people; it means controlling each location and limiting knowledge of what it contains.

Verify every transaction on the device
When you spend or move Bitcoin, the computer prepares transaction details and the hardware wallet presents the information that you are about to authorize. Malware can replace an address in the computer’s clipboard or application. The device display is therefore the security boundary you must inspect.
- Generate or paste the destination address in the companion application.
- Initiate the transaction and wait for the hardware wallet to display the recipient address and amount.
- Compare the address shown on the device with the recipient’s trusted source. Do not approve merely because the first and last characters look familiar.
- Check the amount, fee, network, and account shown on the device. If any detail differs, reject the transaction and investigate the computer or recipient.
- Approve only after the device display matches your intent. Keep the device connected only for the signing operation.
BIP388 and Bitcoin.org’s wallet criteria emphasize user verification of information displayed before approval. A hardware wallet cannot correct an address that you knowingly confirm on its screen.
How to compare hardware wallets for long-term use
Price and appearance are less important than the recovery and verification properties that remain relevant after years of storage. Compare models against the following criteria.

| Criterion | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| On-device verification | Does the device clearly show the full destination address, amount, fee, and network before signing? | Screen verification is the defense against a compromised computer changing transaction details. |
| Backup standard | Does it use BIP39, SLIP39, or another documented format? Are word length and derivation paths clear? | Recovery depends on compatibility, not just on recognizing familiar-looking words. |
| Recovery compatibility | Can you restore with another supported device or documented software if the original vendor disappears? | A long holding may outlive the manufacturer or its companion application. |
| Firmware protections | Does the wallet protect the seed during upgrades and prevent unauthorized downgrades? | Firmware maintenance should not expose or silently replace signing keys. |
| Security transparency | Are security components and relevant code or specifications published clearly? | Public documentation lets independent users understand limitations and recovery procedures. |
| Physical durability | Can the device survive the storage and handling conditions you expect? | Durability reduces device replacement events, although the backup remains the essential recovery item. |
| Support horizon | Are update, documentation, and recovery policies maintained for the expected holding period? | A wallet that is unsupported when you need to restore creates avoidable uncertainty. |
| Scope | Is it Bitcoin-only or multi-asset, and does that scope add features you will not use? | A narrower design can reduce configuration choices; a broader design may add complexity. |
| Advanced controls | How are passphrases or multisignature policies created, documented, and recovered? | Extra controls can reduce single-key risk but increase the chance of an owner-created recovery failure. |
Recovering when the device is lost, broken, or unavailable
Device lost or damaged, backup intact
Acquire a compatible replacement, verify its authenticity, and use the documented restore flow for the exact backup standard. Restore in a private environment, confirm that the expected accounts and receiving addresses appear, and then consider retiring the old addresses if you suspect the device was stolen. A lost device does not by itself reveal the backup, but anyone who obtains both can spend the funds.
Backup damaged, device still works
Do not wait for the device to fail. Create a replacement physical backup using the device’s documented backup-display or backup-management process, verify it, and destroy the damaged copy securely. Never photograph the phrase while transcribing it.
Backup lost or exposed
If the words may have been seen, photographed, copied, or entered online, treat the wallet as compromised. Create a new wallet with a newly generated backup, verify its addresses on the device, and move the funds to it. If the only backup has disappeared and the device still grants access, transfer the funds to a new wallet before the device fails; there is no safe way to reconstruct unknown words from a public address.

Passphrase forgotten
A passphrase creates a different wallet from the same underlying words. A correct seed with a missing or misspelled passphrase can show an empty account. Keep passphrase instructions separate from the seed, but preserve enough exact information for your future self or authorized successor to reproduce capitalization, spaces, and punctuation. If the passphrase itself is lost, the associated account may be unrecoverable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Passphrases and multisignature designs
Advanced users may add a passphrase or use multisignature custody. A passphrase can make a discovered seed insufficient on its own, while multisignature arrangements can require multiple independent approvals. These features also create additional recovery data, configuration choices, and human failure modes.
- Document which wallet software, derivation path, policy, and account type created the arrangement.
- For multisignature, preserve every required cosigner’s extended public information and the signing threshold. A seed alone may not reconstruct the policy.
- Test a complete recovery with a small amount before committing a substantial balance.
- Store recovery documentation separately from the secrets, and do not place all cosigner backups in one location.
BIP388 warns that some wallet policies require backup information beyond the seed. More complexity is justified only when you can explain the recovery process clearly and test it without exposing the secrets.

Long-term storage is not “set it and forget it.” Check the manufacturer’s release notes and recovery instructions before installing firmware or companion-software updates. Bitcoin.org’s wallet criteria include current software, protection of the seed during firmware upgrades, and downgrade protection.
- Update from the official application or documented channel, not from a link in an unsolicited message.
- Confirm that the device still displays the expected accounts and receiving addresses after an update.
- Keep a written record of the model, firmware version, backup standard, derivation path, and date of your last successful recovery test; exclude the seed words.
- Periodically inspect physical backups for moisture, fading, corrosion, or unauthorized access.
- Do not connect the device to an untrusted computer merely to check its balance. Use watch-only information where practical and reserve signing for a controlled environment.
Plan for inheritance and emergencies
A secure backup that no authorized person can locate is functionally unavailable. Create an inheritance or emergency plan that explains where the device and physical backup are held, which recovery standard they use, and who is authorized to act. Keep the seed itself out of ordinary digital records and do not give an untrusted person enough information to spend the funds alone.
Use a sealed, tamper-evident envelope or another method that reveals unauthorized access without printing the secret in a household document. Review the plan after moving house, changing beneficiaries, altering a passphrase, or changing a multisignature policy. Tell successors how to identify the correct official recovery documentation, because scammers target people who inherit unfamiliar wallets.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes and corrective actions
| Mistake | What can happen | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Using a pre-generated seed | The seller or another observer may already know the words. | Reset the device and generate a new backup yourself. |
| Photographing the phrase | A phone backup, cloud sync, or stolen handset can expose it. | Delete digital copies if possible and move funds to a newly generated wallet if exposure is plausible. |
| Entering words on a website | The operator can immediately restore and spend the wallet. | Assume compromise and transfer funds to a new wallet. |
| Skipping the backup check | A transcription error may remain undiscovered until the device fails. | Run the device’s verification procedure before depositing the long-term amount. |
| Trusting the computer’s address | Clipboard malware can redirect a payment. | Compare destination and amount on the hardware-wallet display. |
| Keeping every copy in one place | One fire, flood, or burglary can remove all recovery options. | Use independently protected physical locations. |
| Adding a passphrase without a recovery test | The seed may restore an apparently empty wallet. | Document the exact passphrase and test restoration with a small balance. |
| Assuming a seed works everywhere | An incompatible BIP39, SLIP39, derivation path, or policy can produce no expected accounts. | Restore only with software documented as compatible with the original setup. |
Long-term security checklist
- The device was purchased through a trusted channel and initialized by you.
