A secure TV installation depends on three things: a mount that fits the television, fasteners suited to the wall structure, and correctly attaching and locking the TV to the mount. On a conventional wood-stud-and-drywall wall, Consumer Reports recommends fastening the mount into studs rather than relying on drywall alone. Follow the exact mount’s instructions; if the wall or installation is uncertain, get guidance from the manufacturer or a qualified installer.
Check the TV, mount, and wall before drilling
First identify the wall construction and choose a mount whose instructions permit that wall type. Check the TV’s mounting pattern and weight against the mount’s supported fit and limits. A mount that fits the TV but is not approved for the wall—or a wall installation that does not follow the mount’s specified method—is not a secure match.
Consumer Reports describes conventional wood-stud framing as the simplest setting in its guide; plaster, concrete, and brick can call for different mounting choices or professional installation. Read the exact TV and mount documentation rather than assuming that one mount’s hardware or capacity applies to another.

Secure a mount to a conventional stud wall
- Find and confirm the studs. Use a stud finder to locate both edges of each stud, then mark its center for the fasteners. Wall fasteners or nearby outlets can offer clues to stud locations, but confirm the structure before drilling.
- Position and mark the wall plate. Choose the TV position, hold the mount template or plate in place, and use a level to mark the holes. Check the placement and access to ports and cables before attaching the television.
- Drill the specified pilot holes. Use the bit size and hole locations stated in the mount’s instructions. Do not substitute a drill-bit size, bolt, anchor, or tightening instruction from another mount.
- Fasten and level the plate. Use the fasteners specified for the wall and mount. Consumer Reports describes using a socket wrench for lag bolts and checking level while and after securing the plate. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your particular hardware.
- Lift and lock the TV into place. Have another person help, especially with a large television. Attach the TV to the wall plate and complete the mount’s specified locking procedure before letting go.
Use a wall-specific method for masonry, plaster, or steel studs
Concrete, brick, and concrete block
Use a mount and fasteners whose instructions explicitly cover the masonry type. For example, the ECHOGEAR EGLF3 manual lists wood studs, solid concrete, and concrete block as permitted surfaces and says not to install that mount into drywall alone. Its requirements are specific to that model: the wall must support five times the combined weight of the TV and mount, and the TV must not exceed 110 lb (49.8 kg). These figures are not universal mounting rules.

Steel studs
Steel-stud installation requires a method expressly designed for the specific wall and mount. The ECHOGEAR EGHWSS kit manual limits that kit to steel-stud walls used with tilting or low-profile fixed TV mounts. It also specifies conditions including centered installation, stud construction, drywall thickness, and screw spacing. It is not general approval to attach any mount to steel studs. If the instructions are unclear or you are unsure the wall can safely support the installation, contact the manufacturer or a qualified contractor.
Plaster and other nonstandard walls
Do not assume that the stud-wall steps or hardware apply to plaster or another wall construction. Check the mount’s permitted wall types and required fasteners. Consumer Reports notes that plaster, concrete, and brick may require special choices or professional installation.

Can you mount a TV on drywall without studs?
Do not treat drywall alone as a universal support method. For conventional wood-stud-and-drywall construction, the cited guidance recommends fastening the mount into studs. A different installation is appropriate only when the exact mount instructions specify a compatible method for the actual wall. If you cannot confirm the wall structure or approved attachment method, pause and ask the manufacturer or a qualified installer rather than improvising with anchors.

- The TV and mount fit each other, and the mount’s instructions allow the wall type.
- The wall plate is fastened with the specified hardware using the required locations and installation steps.
- The TV is attached to the plate and the mount’s locking procedure is complete.
- The installation follows all model-specific limits and conditions, including weight and wall requirements.

When to hire a professional
Consider a qualified installer when the wall is masonry, plaster, steel-stud, or otherwise nonstandard; when you cannot verify the structure or appropriate fasteners; or when lifting and positioning the TV safely is difficult. Consumer Reports identifies professional installation as an option for challenging wall types, and the ECHOGEAR steel-stud kit instructions advise contacting a qualified contractor when safety is in doubt.
