To find an earlier ChatGPT conversation on your iPhone, sign in to the app, open the left sidebar, tap its search bar, and enter a distinctive word or phrase from the chat. Select a result to reopen it. This searches saved ChatGPT content in your account or workspace—not the public web.
How do I search my chat history in ChatGPT?
- Sign in to the ChatGPT app on your iPhone.
- Open the left sidebar and select its search bar.
- Enter a distinctive word or phrase from the conversation. Chat-history search can match words in conversation titles and message content, and supports exact matches, so a specific term from the chat may make it easier to find.
- Select the matching result to open the conversation.
These iPhone steps are described in OpenAI’s chat-history search instructions.
What does the sidebar search look for?
The sidebar search is for content saved in ChatGPT, such as chats, projects, images, and files. Depending on what is available in your account or workspace, results may also include connected Google Drive files and folders. Searchable content and filters can differ by account, workspace, and device; see OpenAI’s guide to finding chats, projects, and files.
Recommended Free Tools
- Archived conversations: They can still appear in search.
- Deleted conversations: They do not appear in search results.
Is this the same as searching the web?
No. Sidebar search looks through your existing ChatGPT content so you can reopen something you or your workspace already saved. ChatGPT web search looks for current information online and can use sources to answer a question.

What if I can’t find an old conversation?
- Try a more distinctive word or phrase from the conversation; history search supports exact matches.
- Check whether the conversation was deleted. Deleted chats do not show up in sidebar search, while archived chats can remain searchable.
- If the missing control is specifically the web-search option—not chat-history search—OpenAI recommends starting a new conversation, checking the tools menu, updating the app or trying chatgpt.com, confirming the intended account or workspace and plan usage limit, and asking a workspace administrator whether web search is enabled. These are web-search troubleshooting steps; they are not established fixes for a missing history-search control.
