To find a word or phrase on a web page in Chrome for Android, open the page, tap More (the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner), tap Find in page, type the word or phrase, and tap Search. Chrome highlights the matches on the page, and markers on the scrollbar show where each one sits in the document.
Steps to find text on a web page
- Open the web page in Chrome on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap More in the upper-right corner of the screen.
- Tap Find in page.
- Enter the word or phrase you want to locate.
- Tap Search. Matches are highlighted on the page. Use the markers on the scrollbar to jump between occurrences in the page’s length.
Google’s official Android help describes this path for finding “a specific word or phrase on a web page” (Google Chrome Help, Search the web in Chrome – Android). That page covers the open page only. It does not promise that matching is case-sensitive, that text loaded later by scrolling or hidden inside collapsed sections will always be included, or that the search reaches beyond the page you are viewing.
Find in page or Touch to Search: which one to use
Chrome has two features that are easy to confuse. Both start from text on the screen, but they do different jobs.

Use Find in page when you want to see where a term appears in the article you are reading. Use Touch to Search when you want outside information about a term.

Find text in a PDF open in Chrome
Chrome can also open PDFs, and the search controls differ slightly from a regular web page. Google’s PDF help documents the following steps (Google Chrome Help, Manage PDFs in Chrome – Android):
- Open the PDF in Chrome.
- Tap More, then tap Find in page.
- Enter the text you are looking for.
- Use the up or down arrow to move to the previous or next instance.
Change the default search engine
Touch to Search depends on your default search engine. To check or change it, tap More, then tap Settings, then Basics, then Search engine (Google Chrome Help, Set default search engine and site search shortcuts – Android). Google is the default in some countries, and your default may differ depending on your region.

Troubleshooting when a match is missing
- Check the spelling and spacing. Find in page matches the exact text you type, so try a shorter word or a different form of it.
- Scroll the page and search again. Content that has not yet loaded may not be included in the results.
- Confirm you are in the right view. If the page is a PDF, use the PDF steps above, since the navigation arrows appear there.
- Check your Chrome version. Google’s pages reviewed here do not list minimum Android or Chrome versions, and menu wording can differ across phone makers and updates. If your labels do not match, check Google’s current Android Chrome help.
Sharing a passage instead of searching
If you want to send someone a specific passage rather than find a term yourself, select the text, tap Share, and Chrome creates a link that opens the page with that text highlighted (Google Chrome Help, Share or link to quotes & text in Chrome – Android). This is for sharing, not for locating a term on your own screen.
