Search stock footage faster by starting with a concise description of the shot, confirming you are searching video, and adding only the filters that reflect real requirements. Refine broad results one useful detail at a time, sort for the task, then preview the clip and verify its license before using it.
Build a search from the shot you need
Describe what should be visible, rather than starting with a long list of loosely related keywords. Begin with the subject, then add the single detail most likely to distinguish the intended shot: an action, setting, time of day, composition, or visual treatment. Shutterstock recommends adding keywords when a result set is too large (Shutterstock’s video-search guidance).
- Too broad:
city traffic - More specific:
city traffic at night - Composition-led:
aerial coastline wide shot
Use natural descriptions that reflect the brief. If the refined search returns too little, remove the least essential detail and broaden the query. Avoid treating every synonym as a separate keyword; add or remove terms deliberately so you can see which distinction is useful.
Confirm the media type before narrowing results
On a library that combines photos, video, and other assets, select video or footage before searching. Pond5’s help page describes entering keywords and choosing a media type before searching (Pond5: How Do I Search For Media?). Check the results themselves as well: a relevant thumbnail is not enough if the asset is not a video clip.

Apply filters for actual requirements
Use filters to rule out known mismatches, not as a checklist to exhaust. Depending on the library, useful constraints may include resolution, frame rate, duration, people, contributor, price, usage category, or the shot’s composition. Pond5 recommends combining search terms with filters, and notes that a title search can return thousands or millions of results (Pond5’s stock search tips).
Each extra constraint can remove viable footage if the metadata is missing or the clip is tagged differently than you expect. Start with the must-haves, inspect the remaining options, and relax a nonessential constraint if the results disappear.

Which filters different libraries document
| Library | Documented video-search aids | When they may help |
|---|---|---|
| Pond5 | Keyword and media-type search; sorting by best match, popularity, newest, price, or duration; filters for price, usage, resolution, collections, visual similarity, duration, FPS, people, and artist. Pond5 Help Center | When price, duration, frame rate, usage, or visual similarity is part of the brief. |
| Shutterstock | Keyword refinement; filters for FPS, category, editorial or non-editorial license, contributor, people, and resolution; sorting by newest, relevance, popularity, or random order; clip-ID search and download history. Shutterstock Help Center | When technical specifications, licensing category, people, or a previously used clip matter. |
| Adobe Stock | Video-specific shot-size and shot-angle filters, including examples such as close-up, long shot, aerial, and low angle. Its API documentation also describes keyword search and filtering results to video. Adobe Stock search features · Adobe Stock API search guide | When framing or camera angle is more important than a broad subject match. |
These are documented controls, not a ranking of catalog coverage, result quality, cost, or speed. Controls can change, so check the live search interface. Adobe’s separate filter help page limits vivid-color and depth-of-field controls there to image search; do not assume those are video filters (Adobe Help: Filtering search results).

Sort results to match the task
Sorting is useful after the query and essential filters are in place. Choose relevance or best match when the brief is the priority; choose newest when recency matters; use price or duration only when those are actual constraints. Pond5 documents best match, popularity, newest, price, and duration options, while Shutterstock documents newest, relevance, popularity, and random order (Pond5 Help Center; Shutterstock Help Center). Pond5 says changing media type resets sorting, so recheck the sort after switching it.

Recover exact clips and repeat searches
If you already know the Shutterstock clip ID, search that identifier rather than rebuilding a descriptive query; its help page says an ID search leads directly to the video (Shutterstock: Searching for Video clips). Shutterstock also documents revisiting downloads, which can help locate previously used material.
For visual continuity from a known Pond5 contributor, the older Pond5 guidance describes filtering by artist and using the query syntax artist:(artist name) (Pond5: Search, Convert, Create). Because that guidance is older, verify the syntax and artist controls in the current interface before relying on them.

Preview footage and check rights before use
Search filters help discover candidates; they do not establish that a clip is legally cleared for your project. Open the asset’s detail page, preview the footage, and check its current license and release information before licensing. Pond5 distinguishes commercial and editorial usage and cautions against using editorial or uncleared footage in commercial work (Pond5’s stock search tips; Pond5’s licensing guidance).
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm the clip matches the intended action, framing, and sequence—not just the thumbnail.
- Check that its resolution, frame rate, and duration fit the project workflow.
- Read the item-specific license and release details, especially for commercial projects or recognizable people and places.
What faster searching can—and cannot—promise
Keywords, filters, and sorting provide a repeatable way to narrow candidates, but the cited platform materials do not establish a measured number of minutes saved. Catalog-size figures are not efficiency measures: Pond5’s March 18, 2026 help page describes more than 43 million royalty-free video clips, and Shutterstock’s August 19, 2025 help page reports nearly 100,000 clips arriving weekly. Those are company-published catalog figures, not independent audits or evidence of a particular time saving.
