To scroll down on a Samsung Chromebook, place two fingers on its touchpad and move them down. On a touchscreen model, drag a finger down the screen. If the touchpad moves the page in the opposite direction than you expect, change the Reverse scrolling setting.
Scroll with the touchpad
- Rest two fingers on the touchpad.
- Move both fingers down to scroll down, or up to scroll up. Move them left or right to scroll horizontally.
Google’s Chromebook touchpad instructions describe this as the standard Chromebook gesture. It does not require an accessory.
Scroll with a touchscreen
If your Samsung Chromebook has a touchscreen, place a finger on the page and drag it down to move down. Drag up, left, or right to move the page in those directions. This method is available only on touchscreen models; Google’s touchscreen instructions cover the gesture.
Change the touchpad scroll direction
- Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
- Open Settings.
- Under Device, select Touchpad or Touchpad and mouse.
- Change the Reverse scrolling option and try the two-finger gesture again.
With Reverse off, Google describes swiping up as moving the page up; with Reverse on, swiping up moves the page down. ChromeOS menu labels and organization can change, so look in the current device or touchpad settings if the paths above differ.

If the touchpad does not respond
Try these checks in order:
- Check the touchpad for dust or dirt and clean it gently.
- Press Esc several times.
- Drum your fingers on the touchpad for ten seconds.
- Restart the Chromebook and test scrolling again.
Google includes these steps in its touchpad troubleshooting guidance. A factory data reset is another listed option, but it is more disruptive; consult current Google or Samsung guidance before attempting one. If the problem continues, contact the Chromebook manufacturer.
Use a mouse as another option
If you prefer a physical wheel or need an alternative input method, you can connect a wired, wireless, or Bluetooth mouse with a scroll wheel. Google lists these among peripherals that Chromebooks can use in its device connection guidance. A mouse is optional; the built-in touchpad works without one.
