For a Windows PC, press Windows + Shift + S to select a region, window, or full screen in Snipping Tool. For a Mac, press Shift + Command + 3 for the entire display, Shift + Command + 4 for a selected area, or add Space after Shift + Command + 4 to capture a window. These built-in tools are normally all you need; no extra screenshot utility is required.
This guide covers still screenshots of what your computer displays, including where captures go, how to copy or save them, multi-monitor behavior, menus, protected windows, and common failures.
Before you start: a screenshot captures the computer display
A screenshot records the pixels rendered by Windows or macOS. It is different from photographing the physical monitor with a phone, and it does not capture anything outside the desktop. If an application blocks screen capture, the operating system shortcut cannot override that restriction.

Windows: use Snipping Tool for most captures
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool is built into Windows 10 and Windows 11. The quickest flexible shortcut is Windows + Shift + S.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

Capture a selected part of the screen
- Press Windows + Shift + S. A capture bar appears at the top of the display.
- Choose a mode: rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip.
- For a rectangular or freeform snip, drag around the area. For a window or full-screen snip, select the target when it highlights.
- The image is copied to the clipboard and opens in Snipping Tool. Select the notification or open Snipping Tool to annotate, crop, copy, share, or save it.
Rectangular mode is best for a precise box; freeform mode follows an irregular outline. Window mode usually includes the selected application window rather than the whole desktop. Microsoft documents the modes and editing controls in its Snipping Tool instructions.
Capture the entire Windows desktop
Press Print Screen (also labeled PrtSc or PrtScn on some keyboards) to copy a full-screen image to the clipboard. On some PCs, a compact keyboard requires an Fn combination; the exact key depends on the hardware.
Press Windows + Print Screen to capture the full screen and save an image in the Pictures/Screenshots folder. Microsoft also allows Print Screen to be configured to open screen snipping instead, so the key may not behave identically on every Windows installation. Check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard if pressing it opens the snipping overlay rather than copying the desktop. See Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcut reference for the documented combinations.
Save, copy, and annotate a Windows capture
- Save a file: In Snipping Tool, select the Save control, choose a format and folder, and enter a filename.
- Copy without saving: Use the Copy control in Snipping Tool or press Ctrl + C while the capture is open, then paste into an email, document, chat, or image editor.
- Mark up the image: Use the pen, highlighter, crop, and other annotation controls before saving.
- Find automatic saves: Start with Pictures/Screenshots. Snipping Tool versions and settings differ, so open the app’s current Settings if captures are being saved somewhere else or not being saved automatically.
Keep a menu open while capturing it
Menus often close when you move to the snipping controls. Open the menu first, press Windows + Shift + S, then use Snipping Tool’s Delay option when available. The countdown gives you time to reopen or position the menu before the capture occurs.

Mac: capture the display, a region, or a window
macOS saves screenshots to the desktop by default. Apple’s current shortcut documentation is available in Take a screenshot on Mac and its Mac keyboard shortcut guide.
Capture the whole screen
Press Shift + Command + 3. Each connected display is captured as its own image when macOS creates separate desktop files. A thumbnail may appear briefly; click it to mark up the image, or wait for it to save.
Capture a selected area
- Press Shift + Command + 4. The pointer becomes a crosshair.
- Drag from one corner of the area to the opposite corner.
- Release the mouse or trackpad button to capture it. Press Escape before releasing to cancel.
Capture a window or menu
- Open the window or menu you need.
- Press Shift + Command + 4, then press Space. The pointer changes to a camera.
- Click the target window or menu.
Hold Option while clicking if you want to omit the window’s shadow. This method is useful when you want a clean window boundary rather than a manually dragged rectangle.
Open the Screenshot utility
Press Shift + Command + 5 to open macOS’s Screenshot utility. It provides controls for full-screen, window, and selected-area captures, plus options for the save location and other capture behavior. Use it when you need a repeatable setting rather than a one-off shortcut.

Copy a Mac screenshot instead of saving it
Add Control to the relevant shortcut. For example, Control + Shift + Command + 3 copies the full-screen capture to the clipboard instead of creating a desktop file. You can also Control-click the thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard. The Screenshot utility’s Options menu changes the default save location.
Choose the shortcut by the result you need
| Need | Windows | Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Entire screen | Print Screen copies it; Windows + Print Screen saves a file in PicturesScreenshots. | Shift + Command + 3 saves to the desktop by default. |
| Selected region | Windows + Shift + S, then choose rectangular or freeform snip. | Shift + Command + 4, then drag the crosshair. |
| Window or menu | Open the Snipping Tool overlay and choose Window snip; use Delay for menus. | Shift + Command + 4, press Space, then click the target. |
| Clipboard rather than a file | Print Screen or Snipping Tool’s Copy control. | Add Control to the screenshot shortcut or use the thumbnail’s Save to Clipboard command. |
Multiple monitors and display scaling
A full-screen capture includes the display area that the operating system exposes to the screenshot tool. On a multi-monitor Mac, Shift + Command + 3 normally creates a capture for each connected display. On Windows, use Window snip for one application or rectangular snip to draw around one monitor; Windows + Print Screen follows your Windows display configuration and may include the full desktop arrangement.
If text or controls look unexpectedly large or small, check Windows display scaling or macOS display resolution before capturing. A screenshot preserves the rendered size; it does not create a higher-resolution version of an application than the display produced.
When a screenshot does not work
Nothing happens when you press the shortcut
- Confirm you are using the correct operating-system shortcut. Windows uses the Windows key; macOS uses Command.
- On a compact Windows keyboard, try the manufacturer’s Fn combination for Print Screen.
- On Windows, verify that the Print Screen setting has not been changed to launch screen snipping.
- On a Mac, open System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots and check for a conflicting or disabled shortcut.
The capture is copied but you cannot find a file
Clipboard captures do not create a file until you paste or save them. Paste with Ctrl + V on Windows or Command + V on Mac into an image-capable application, then save. For Windows Snipping Tool, inspect its current Settings and the PicturesScreenshots folder. For macOS, inspect the desktop or the save location shown in Screenshot utility’s Options.

A menu disappears before it is captured
Use Windows Snipping Tool’s Delay option. On Mac, open the menu first, invoke Shift + Command + 4 followed by Space, and click the menu while the camera pointer is active.
A protected app produces a blank or blocked image
Some applications, including Apple TV, may restrict screenshots of their windows, as Apple notes in its support guidance. A normal shortcut cannot bypass an application’s protection; use the app’s permitted export or sharing function instead.
The image is the wrong size or format
Choose the capture boundary again rather than enlarging a saved image. Snipping Tool and macOS Screenshot save raster images, so enlarging them after capture can make text soft. If you need a particular file format, open the saved image in an editor and export it in the required format.
Screenshot versus screen recording
A screenshot is one still frame. Windows Snipping Tool also includes video snips in current versions, and macOS’s Screenshot utility includes recording controls, but those are separate workflows. Use a recording when motion, scrolling, or a sequence of actions matters; use the shortcuts above for a single monitor image.

Or skip the browser setup
If what you actually need is a screenshot of a website rather than your local monitor, ScreenshotNeo returns a webpage image or PDF through one request. It is not a replacement for Windows or Mac shortcuts: it loads the URL on a capture service, so it is useful for automated documentation, testing, reports, and AI workflows.
The API accepts PNG, JPEG, or WebP output and supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper sizes and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Common parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work.
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page result and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
