To screenshot one monitor in Windows 11, press Windows+Shift+S, choose Rectangular snip, and drag a box entirely inside the display you want. For one application on that monitor, choose Window snip and select the window. Windows copies the result to your clipboard and opens it in Snipping Tool so you can paste, annotate, or save it.

If you do not know which display Windows calls Monitor 1 or Monitor 2, open Settings > System > Display and select Identify. A number appears on each physical screen.

The quickest way to capture one monitor

  1. Move the webpage, document, or app you want to capture onto the target monitor.
  2. Press Windows+Shift+S. The Snipping Tool capture overlay appears. Microsoft documents this shortcut and its capture modes in its Snipping Tool instructions.
  3. Select Rectangular snip from the overlay.
  4. Drag from one corner to the opposite corner, keeping the entire selection inside the monitor you want. Release the mouse button.
  5. The image is copied to the clipboard and opened in Snipping Tool. Press Ctrl+V in another app to paste it, or use Snipping Tool’s save command and press Ctrl+S to write a file.

The rectangular boundary is the important part: it lets you exclude the other display even when Windows is using an extended desktop.

Identify the correct display before you capture

Windows assigns a number to each connected monitor. To match those numbers with the physical screens, go to Settings > System > Display, select Identify, and read the large number shown on each display. The monitor arrangement shown in Display settings also reflects how the pointer moves between screens. Microsoft explains this identification workflow in its multiple-monitor support page.

Identification is useful when a window is on a screen to your left or above the primary display, or when several monitors have similar sizes. It does not change the capture itself; it simply prevents you from dragging the snip around the wrong screen.

Choose the capture mode that matches your goal

What you need Snipping Tool mode How to use it Boundary control
A region of one monitor Rectangular snip Drag around the required area on that display. Explicit; you define every edge.
One application window Window snip Choose Window snip, then click the target window. Windows uses the selected window’s bounds.
Everything visible on a display Full-screen snip, with caution Use only if the result meets your isolation requirement; Microsoft does not document a full-screen-by-monitor-number command. Not a documented monitor-number selector.
Entire desktop through Print Screen Print Screen Press Print Screen to copy the screen image. Too broad when another monitor must be excluded.

Rectangular snip: best for part or all of one monitor

Rectangular snip is the dependable choice for a dashboard, browser page, spreadsheet area, or a complete display when you can drag accurately from one edge to the other. Start inside the target display and finish inside it. If the selection crosses the boundary between displays, the resulting image will include content from both areas.

Window snip: best for one application

Choose Window snip instead when the requirement is the application rather than the entire monitor. Click the target window after the overlay highlights available windows. This avoids manually tracing the window’s edges and is useful when the app is surrounded by other windows.

Full-screen snip: do not assume it means one numbered monitor

The reviewed Microsoft documentation lists a full-screen snip but does not describe a command that means “capture monitor 2 only.” If strict single-monitor isolation matters, use a rectangular selection that spans the desired display or use Window snip. That approach is explicit and does not rely on undocumented behavior.

Save, edit, and transfer the screenshot

Paste it immediately

After the snip, switch to Mail, Word, Teams, Paint, an image editor, or another destination and press Ctrl+V. The capture is placed from the clipboard without requiring an intermediate file.

Save a file from Snipping Tool

The capture opens in Snipping Tool. Make any available edits or annotations, then press Ctrl+S and choose a folder and filename. Use a descriptive name such as monitor-2-checkout-2026-09-29 when you need to distinguish captures from different displays.

Keep the selection at the display edge

For a whole-monitor image, begin just inside one corner of the target display and drag to the opposite corner. Windows’ scaling, taskbar placement, and display arrangement can make a one-pixel boundary difficult to judge, so zooming the content or making a second snip is often safer than including a neighboring screen and cropping later.

Why Print Screen is usually the wrong shortcut here

Microsoft describes Print Screen as capturing the entire screen to the clipboard. That makes it convenient for a complete desktop but unsuitable when the requirement is to exclude another monitor. Microsoft’s window and screen instructions also cover Snipping Tool’s selected capture workflow. Use Windows+Shift+S when the capture boundary matters.

Keyboard layouts and devices can expose Print Screen differently; Microsoft lists device-dependent alternatives in its Print Screen shortcut guidance. Those alternatives do not create a documented “monitor by number” capture mode, so they are not a replacement for a selected snip.

Reliable workflow for extended desktops

  1. Open Display settings and select Identify if you are uncertain which physical screen is the target.
  2. Place the content on that screen. If it is a window, maximize it only when you want the window to fill the display; maximizing is not required for Window snip.
  3. Press Windows+Shift+S and select the mode that matches the desired scope.
  4. Watch the selection outline as it approaches the bezel or logical edge. Stop before it crosses into the neighboring display.
  5. Paste the result somewhere temporary and inspect all four edges before saving or sending it.

This check catches the most common practical error: a selection that begins on the correct monitor but ends across the virtual-desktop boundary.

Troubleshooting

The overlay does not appear

  • Press the three keys together: hold the Windows key, hold Shift, then press S.
  • If you are using a compact keyboard or remote session, verify that the Windows key is not disabled by a hardware gaming mode or policy.
  • Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu as a fallback, then start a new capture from its toolbar.

The screenshot contains part of the other monitor

  • Cancel and repeat the rectangular snip with both corners inside the target display.
  • Use Display settings’ Identify command to confirm the physical monitor and its arrangement.
  • If you need only an app, use Window snip; it avoids a manually drawn boundary.

The wrong window is captured

  • Bring the desired application to the foreground before pressing Windows+Shift+S.
  • Choose Window snip and click the highlighted target window, not the desktop or another overlapping window.
  • For content spread across multiple windows, use Rectangular snip instead.

The capture is not where you expected

  • Press Ctrl+V in Paint or another image-capable app to test the clipboard.
  • Return to Snipping Tool and save with Ctrl+S if you need a persistent file.
  • Do not close or replace the clipboard contents before pasting if you have not saved the image.

You need an exact full-display image

Windows’ documented modes do not provide a full-screen command that accepts a monitor number. Use a rectangular snip drawn across the target display, verify its edges, and save it. If the target is a single application, Window snip is less error-prone.

Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo for web pages

Windows Snipping Tool captures what is visible on your local monitors. If your real task is generating repeatable screenshots of public or authenticated web pages, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server; it does not capture your physical Windows desktop. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF of a URL.

Use the API documentation at screenshotneo.com/docs/ for the complete parameter list. A minimal cURL request is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those cleanup steps can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

For automation, options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper sizes and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, selector hiding, waits for a selector, delay, or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Common parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work.

Practical decision guide

  • One region on one display: Windows+Shift+S, Rectangular snip.
  • One app on one display: Windows+Shift+S, Window snip.
  • Entire display with strict isolation: Rectangular snip drawn from edge to edge; verify the result.
  • Entire desktop: Print Screen can copy the whole screen, but it is intentionally broader.
  • Repeatable screenshots of URLs: Use a webpage API such as ScreenshotNeo rather than a local desktop shortcut.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Windows select a monitor by number for a full-screen snip?
