The right method depends on what “entire PDF” means. A normal screenshot captures only the page or window currently visible. To capture one visible page or area, use your PDF reader or operating system. To turn a multi-page PDF into images, use a PDF-to-image export or conversion workflow; that is different from taking a screenshot, and it may produce one image per page rather than one very tall image.
Decide what you need to capture
Before choosing a command, identify the required scope and output. This prevents the most common mistake: expecting a screen capture to scroll through and combine every PDF page automatically.

Keeping the original PDF is preferable when you need searchable text, selectable content, links or print fidelity. A screenshot is rasterized and can lose those properties.

Use Snapshot for a selected area
Adobe describes Snapshot as an area capture: it copies the selected PDF region as an image that you can paste into another application. It is available in the desktop Reader application, not the browser version.

- Open the PDF in the desktop Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader application.
- Choose Edit > More > Take A Snapshot.
- Drag a rectangle around the page area you want.
- Release the mouse. The selected area is copied as an image.
- Paste it into an image editor, document, email or other destination.
- Press Esc to leave Snapshot mode.
Menu placement can vary by release. In Acrobat’s platform-specific menus, Windows may show Snapshot under the hamburger menu’s “Undo, Redo & more” group, while macOS may show it under Edit > Undo, Redo and More. The operation remains a selected-area capture; it does not collect pages that are outside the selected rectangle.
Print a selected graphic instead
If you need a paper copy of only the selected area, Acrobat’s print workflow can use Print this file and Selected graphic. That option prints the selection; it is not an export of every PDF page into one image.
When copying is disabled
A PDF’s security settings can prevent copying. In Acrobat or Reader, open Document Properties > Security and inspect Document Restrictions Summary. If the owner has disallowed copying, Snapshot or clipboard commands may be unavailable. You may need permission from the document owner or an authorized copy of the file.
Capture the PDF window on a Mac
macOS can capture the entire screen, a window or a selected region. These shortcuts record what is displayed at that moment, so they do not scroll through a multi-page document or create a stitched “all pages” image.

- Shift-Command-3: capture the entire screen.
- Shift-Command-4: select a screen region.
- Shift-Command-4, then Space: capture a window or menu.
- Shift-Command-5: open the Screenshot app on macOS Mojave 10.14 or later.
- Open the PDF and position the page exactly as you want it captured.
- Use the shortcut that matches your scope. For a clean window capture, use Shift-Command-4, then press Space and select the PDF window.
- Find the resulting file on the Desktop by default.
- To change the destination or other options, open the Screenshot app with Shift-Command-5 and choose a different location from Options.
For a single page that is taller than the visible window, zoom out or capture the page in sections. Do not describe that result as the entire multi-page PDF.
Copy an entire PDF file in Windows Reader
Adobe’s current Reader documentation lists Edit > Copy File to Clipboard in the Windows desktop application. This copies the PDF file itself to the clipboard. It is useful when you need to paste or transfer the original document, but it is not a screenshot and does not create a single long image.
- Open the PDF in the Windows desktop Reader application, not a browser tab.
- Choose Edit > Copy File to Clipboard.
- Paste into a location that accepts files, such as a folder, message or document editor.
If the command is missing, confirm that you are using the desktop application and check the document’s security restrictions. A browser PDF viewer does not provide this same whole-file command.
When you need every page as images
A request to “screenshot an entire PDF” often really means “make an image of each page.” Use a PDF-to-image export or conversion function for that job. The exact menus differ among Acrobat editions, operating systems and third-party converters, so verify whether the tool creates:

- one image file per page;
- a contact sheet containing thumbnails;
- one continuous, vertically stitched image; or
- a new PDF with rasterized pages.
Choose the output format and resolution before converting. PNG is suitable for text, diagrams and line art; JPEG can be smaller for photographic pages but introduces compression artifacts. A higher resolution improves legibility while increasing file size and processing time. If the PDF contains sensitive information, use a trusted local application rather than uploading it to an unknown online converter.
Why one long image can be impractical
Combining dozens or hundreds of pages into one bitmap creates a very tall canvas. Image viewers, browsers and messaging systems may have height or memory limits, and text becomes difficult to read when the entire document is viewed at once. Separate page images are usually easier to search, share and replace. Request a stitched image only when a downstream system specifically requires one.

Troubleshoot common failures
The capture contains only part of the PDF
Cause: A screenshot records the current viewport. Fix: If you need every page, stop using a screen shortcut and switch to PDF-to-image conversion. If you need one page that is larger than the window, capture it in sections or use an application feature that exports the page.

Cause: You may be viewing the PDF in a browser, using a different Acrobat layout, or using a release with a moved menu. Fix: Open the file in desktop Reader/Acrobat and look under Edit > More > Take A Snapshot or the platform-specific “Undo, Redo and More” menu.

Nothing copies to the clipboard
Cause: Document security may prohibit copying. Fix: Check Document Properties > Security > Document Restrictions Summary. Obtain permission or an unrestricted source when copying is not allowed.
The pasted image is blurry
Cause: The capture resolution is tied to your display scale and zoom level. Fix: Zoom the PDF to a readable size, maximize the window, capture at the highest practical display scale, or export the page directly to an image at a controlled resolution.
The output is too large to open or share
Cause: A stitched image or high-resolution page set can exceed application or service limits. Fix: Export separate pages, reduce resolution, choose JPEG for photographic content, or split the document into smaller batches.

Cause: Browser viewers expose fewer PDF editing and clipboard features. Fix: Download the file and open it in the desktop Reader/Acrobat application, or use the browser’s ordinary screen capture only for the visible page.

Accuracy, privacy and reliability checks
- Confirm the scope: “Screenshot” may mean one viewport, one page, every page as separate files or one stitched canvas.
- Check the source: A browser viewer may require authentication, block automated access or render pages dynamically.
- Preserve the original: Keep the PDF alongside any raster exports when text search, accessibility or links matter.
- Inspect output: Open several pages, including the first and last, to verify orientation, missing fonts, clipped margins and image quality.
- Protect confidential documents: Avoid uploading restricted PDFs to services unless your organization permits it; use local conversion where required.
- Record settings: Note page range, resolution, color mode and output format so the conversion can be repeated consistently.
