Use Windows+Shift+S for a selected area, window, or screen; Windows+PrtScn to save the whole screen automatically; and Microsoft Edge’s Screenshot full-page command to capture a complete, scrollable webpage. The right method depends on whether you need a clipboard image, a file, or content below the fold.
Choose the Windows 10 screenshot method that fits
| What you need | Shortcut or command | What you get | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|---|
| A selected region, window, or screen | Windows+Shift+S | Rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen capture | Clipboard first; open the Snipping Tool notification to annotate, save, or share |
| The entire monitor saved immediately | Windows+PrtScn | Static full-screen PNG image | PicturesScreenshots |
| A complete webpage, including content you must scroll to | Edge Screenshot or Ctrl+Shift+S | Full-page browser capture with markup options | Copy or save from the Edge overlay |
| A full-screen snapshot copied without opening the overlay | PrtScn | Static full-screen image | Clipboard |
Windows shortcuts work at the desktop level, while the documented full-page workflow is a Microsoft Edge feature. Edge’s menus and shortcuts can change after browser updates, so the labels may differ slightly on a patched installation.
How to screenshot part of a webpage with Windows+Shift+S
This is the quickest option for a paragraph, image, dialog, browser window, or any area visible on your monitor.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open the webpage and leave the content you want visible.
- Press Windows+Shift+S. A snipping toolbar appears at the top of the screen.
- Choose a mode: Rectangular snip for a precise box, Freeform snip for an irregular outline, Window snip for one application window, or Full-screen snip for everything visible.
- Select the area. Windows copies the image to the clipboard.
- Select the Snipping Tool notification that appears. From there you can mark up the image, save it, or share it.
Rectangular versus window capture
- Rectangular: best when you want only the article body, a chart, or a single control.
- Freeform: useful for isolating a non-rectangular object, although the result still works like an image.
- Window: captures the chosen application window rather than manually dragging around it.
- Full screen: captures all visible monitors or the complete desktop view offered by the snipping overlay.
Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog described this workflow on April 8, 2019: “To quickly snip and share a screenshot, press the Windows key + Shift + S to bring up a snipping toolbar – use it to snip a rectangle, something a bit more freeform, or full screen and it will go straight to your clipboard.”

How to save the whole screen automatically
Press Windows+PrtScn. The screen briefly dims, and Windows saves the image in your user profile’s PicturesScreenshots folder. Open File Explorer and select Pictures, then Screenshots.
If your keyboard uses a function layer
On some laptops, the Print Screen key is shared with another function. Try Fn+PrtScn or Fn+Windows+PrtScn, depending on the keyboard labeling. If there is no accessible key, a full-size USB keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen key is a practical accessory for Microsoft’s documented workflows.
What PrtScn by itself does
Pressing PrtScn alone makes a static full-screen snapshot and places it on the clipboard. Open an image editor, email, or document and press Ctrl+V to paste it. Unlike Windows+PrtScn, it does not automatically create a file in PicturesScreenshots.

How to capture an entire long webpage in Microsoft Edge
A normal screen capture cannot include content below the viewport. Edge’s Screenshot feature can capture the complete webpage, including sections that require scrolling, and then lets you copy, save, and add markup.
- Open the page in Microsoft Edge and wait for the visible content to finish loading.
- Open the page’s context menu by right-clicking, then choose Screenshot. You can also open Screenshot from Edge Settings, or press Ctrl+Shift+S.
- In the Screenshot overlay, choose the full-page option rather than a manually selected area.
- Review the captured page. Use the markup tools if you need to draw, highlight, or annotate.
- Choose Copy to place the result on the clipboard or Save to write it to a file.
Moving content and lazy sections
Edge notes that moving content such as GIFs or carousels can remain on screen during capture. The frame you receive may therefore show an animation at the moment Edge captured it rather than a single predictable still. For pages that load sections only after scrolling, allow the page to load and verify the resulting image; a browser capture is limited by what the feature can render during its full-page pass.
When Edge’s command is missing
- Confirm that you are using Microsoft Edge, not another browser. The documented full-page command is an Edge feature.
- Try both the right-click Screenshot entry and Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Update Edge and restart it if the command or overlay does not appear.
- For a short page, use Windows+Shift+S and select a rectangle instead; that method cannot produce a true scrolling capture.
Clipboard, files, and editing: what happens after capture
Clipboard-first captures
Windows+Shift+S and PrtScn put the image on the clipboard. Paste it into Paint, an email, a ticket, or a document. If you need a permanent file, open the Snipping Tool notification (for a snip) or paste into an editor and use Save as.

Automatically saved captures
Windows+PrtScn writes directly to PicturesScreenshots. If you do not see the folder, open File Explorer’s address bar and enter %USERPROFILE%PicturesScreenshots. A work or school policy can redirect known folders, so check the Pictures location shown in that profile.
Markup before sharing
The Snipping Tool notification and Edge Screenshot overlay provide annotation or markup before copying or saving. Use that step to obscure personal information, draw attention to a control, or add a quick explanation instead of editing after you have already shared the image.
Common problems and fixes
The shortcut does nothing
- Make sure the Windows key is not locked by a gaming-keyboard mode.
- On laptops, hold Fn when the Print Screen key is combined with another function.
- Press the keys together once, release them, and wait for the snipping toolbar rather than holding them down.
The screenshot is black or shows the wrong window
- Bring the target page to the front before starting the capture.
- For protected video or hardware-accelerated content, the browser or operating system may intentionally prevent pixels from being captured.
- Use Window snip when several overlapping windows make rectangular selection unreliable.
The whole page is cut off
You used a desktop snip, which captures only the visible viewport. Reopen the page in Edge and select Screenshot’s full-page option. If the page has an open menu, cookie dialog, or expanding panel, close or settle it before starting; changing layout during a scroll capture can alter the final image.

The file is hard to find
Only Windows+PrtScn automatically saves to PicturesScreenshots. Snipping Tool and Edge wait for you to choose Save. Check the Snipping Tool notification, Edge’s save action, and the clipboard before repeating the capture.
The result is too large to send
Open the saved image in Paint or another editor and resize or export it as JPEG. Keep the original if you may need to crop again; resizing is destructive when you overwrite the source.

- Wait for fonts, images, and expandable sections to finish loading.
- Set the browser zoom and window size deliberately; those determine the pixels in a desktop snip.
- Check the captured image for addresses, account names, tokens, and notifications before sharing.
- For a full-page image, inspect the top, middle, and bottom for duplicated, missing, or moving content.
- Use a descriptive filename with the page name and date so later captures are easy to distinguish.
- Keep the original file when annotations or compression could matter for support or legal records.
Or skip the browser setup
For repeatable captures, scripts, documentation builds, or AI workflows, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed.
Use the API documentation at screenshotneo.com/docs/ for all 63 options, including full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size and page ranges, HTML/CSS rendering, custom JavaScript and CSS, clicks before capture, hidden selectors, selector or network-idle waits, ad/tracker/request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable cache TTL, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of 100 URLs per call, usage data, and an OpenAPI specification.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Windows 10 capture a webpage that is longer than the screen?
Yes. In Microsoft Edge, open Screenshot from the right-click menu or Settings, or press Ctrl+Shift+S, then choose the full-page option.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why can’t I find a screenshot I took with Windows+Shift+S?
That shortcut copies the snip to the clipboard first. Open the Snipping Tool notification to save it, or paste it into an editor and save the file.
Where does Windows+PrtScn save screenshots?
Windows documents the PicturesScreenshots subfolder. In File Explorer, you can enter %USERPROFILE%PicturesScreenshots in the address bar.
Does PrtScn capture only the browser?
No. PrtScn by itself captures the full visible screen to the clipboard. Use Window snip if you need only the browser window.
