Short answer: use SeleniumBasic to find the target WebElement, then call that element’s TakeScreenshot method. In VBA, SeleniumBasic exposes WebElement.TakeScreenshot(delayms) and returns an Image object. The browser caveat is important: Microsoft retired Internet Explorer and ended support on June 15, 2022. Selenium no longer supports standalone Internet Explorer; for legacy sites, test Microsoft Edge in IE mode or migrate the automation to a supported browser.
Choose the browser path before writing VBA
The code pattern is straightforward, but the browser you automate determines whether it is supportable. Microsoft’s retirement announcement states that Internet Explorer was officially retired and out of support on June 15, 2022. Selenium’s IE-specific documentation likewise says standalone Internet Explorer is no longer supported, while the IE driver can run Microsoft Edge in IE Compatibility Mode.
| Runtime | When it makes sense | Maintenance and support position |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone Internet Explorer | You must reproduce an old, isolated environment for a legacy application. | Legacy and unsupported by current Selenium documentation. Keep it contained and do not treat it as a new deployment target. |
| Microsoft Edge IE mode | The site requires IE compatibility but the workstation can use current Edge. | Microsoft’s stated compatibility route. Validate the exact Edge, IE mode policy, driver and SeleniumBasic combination in your environment. |
| Current browser and driver | The site works in a modern browser or you are replacing the old workflow. | Usually the best long-term choice. SeleniumBasic’s VBA-facing behavior and the selected driver still need compatibility testing. |
Selenium’s general documentation demonstrates element screenshots in Java, Python and C#. Those examples are not VBA examples. VBA users normally reach the same WebDriver capability through the separate SeleniumBasic COM library.

Prerequisites and a stable element locator
- Excel or another VBA host in which SeleniumBasic is installed and registered.
- A browser and driver pair that your installed SeleniumBasic build can start. For IE compatibility, verify whether your deployment uses standalone IE or Edge IE mode.
- The target page’s URL and a selector that identifies one element reliably.
- Permission to automate the site and capture its content.
Prefer an ID or another stable page-specific attribute. A selector such as #invoice-total is less fragile than a long chain of generated class names. If the site changes its markup, the locator must be updated; Selenium cannot capture an element it cannot find.

Minimal VBA example: locate one element and capture it
The following macro shows the complete capture path. It starts a SeleniumBasic session, opens a page, finds one element by CSS selector, waits 500 milliseconds through the method’s optional delay argument, and receives the returned image object.
Option Explicit
Public Sub CaptureSpecificElement()
On Error GoTo CaptureError
Dim driver As New Selenium.WebDriver
Dim target As Selenium.WebElement
Dim image As Object
'Use "ie" only for an environment where that driver path is available.
'For an IE-only site on a current workstation, test Edge IE mode instead.
driver.Start "ie"
driver.Get "https://example.com"
'Replace this with a selector from the page you are automating.
Set target = driver.FindElementByCss("#invoice-total")
'delayms is optional; 0 is the default. The return value is SeleniumBasic's Image object.
Set image = target.TakeScreenshot(500)
'The object was returned successfully. Inspect its exact type in your installed build.
Debug.Print "Screenshot object type: " & TypeName(image)
driver.Quit
Exit Sub
CaptureError:
On Error Resume Next
If Not driver Is Nothing Then driver.Quit
On Error GoTo 0
MsgBox "Element capture failed: " & Err.Description, vbExclamation
End Sub
The SeleniumBasic source declares the method as Image TakeScreenshot(int delayms = 0). The declaration establishes the VBA-facing API surface, not a guarantee that every SeleniumBasic release, browser and driver will execute it successfully. Test the exact versions installed on the machine that will run the macro.
What the delay argument does
TakeScreenshot(500) requests a 500-millisecond delay before the element capture. Use it when a transition, chart, image or client-side update needs a brief settling period. It is not a substitute for waiting until the element exists. If the element is created asynchronously, first wait for it to be present and visible, then use a short capture delay only if the rendered content still needs time to settle.

Saving the returned image
The evidence for SeleniumBasic identifies the return type as Image, but the exact file-writing members exposed by a particular SeleniumBasic build are not established by that declaration alone. Before writing a production save routine, inspect the referenced SeleniumBasic type library in the VBA Object Browser and confirm the members on the returned image object. Do not assume that a method shown in a different Selenium wrapper exists in your installation. A safe first diagnostic is the TypeName(image) line in the example; then verify the available save or stream method for that build.
When the target is inside a frame
Selenium searches the current browsing context. If the element lives inside an iframe or another frame, switch into that frame before calling FindElementByCss. After the capture, switch back to the top-level document before locating elements outside the frame. The exact frame-switching member names depend on the SeleniumBasic version and its COM wrapper, so confirm them in that version’s object browser and test with the same driver/browser pair. A selector that works in the top document will otherwise appear to be missing even when the element is visible in the frame.
Make the capture reliable on real pages
Wait for presence, visibility and final content
Do not launch the page and immediately search for a late-rendered element. Establish that the element exists, is displayed and contains the content you need. A page can return an element node before a framework has populated its text or an image has finished loading. Use a bounded wait strategy in your VBA code, and fail with a useful message when the timeout expires rather than looping forever.

Use a selector that survives harmless redesigns
IDs, dedicated data attributes and semantic attributes are preferable to selectors based on position, such as “the third div.” If you control the page, add a stable attribute specifically for automation. If you do not, inspect several page states and choose the smallest selector that remains unique.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Capture the element, not a guessed rectangle
Calling TakeScreenshot on the WebElement delegates element-level capture to WebDriver. This avoids manually calculating screen coordinates, which can change with window position, zoom, scaling and responsive layout. Driver behavior still matters: Selenium’s documentation describes the endpoint and returned screenshot data, but does not promise identical rendering across all drivers.
Keep the session lifecycle explicit
Always close the driver in both the success and error paths. A failed macro that leaves browser processes running can consume resources and interfere with the next run. The example’s error handler attempts to quit before displaying the error.

Common failures and precise fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Driver will not start | The browser, driver and SeleniumBasic versions do not match, or the selected IE path is unavailable. | Record the installed versions, test the supported browser/driver pairing, and consider Edge IE mode or a current browser instead of standalone IE. |
| “Element not found” | The selector is wrong, the page has not finished loading, or the element is inside a frame. | Verify the selector in the page, add a bounded wait, and switch into the correct frame before searching. |
| The element exists but capture fails | The element is hidden, not yet rendered, outside the active context, or unsupported by the driver. | Confirm visibility, wait for final rendering, check the frame context, and test the same operation with the installed driver. |
| Blank or incomplete image | A script, image or transition was still running when the capture occurred. | Wait for the relevant content, then use the optional delayms settling period. Avoid an unbounded fixed sleep. |
| Code compiles on one computer but not another | SeleniumBasic references, registered COM classes or browser drivers differ. | Compare references and installed versions, then validate the complete deployment rather than copying only the macro. |
| You cannot save the returned object | The image wrapper’s members differ from another Selenium library or release. | Inspect the returned object and SeleniumBasic type library in the target installation; confirm the supported file or stream API there. |
| Standalone IE is required by the business process | The workflow depends on an obsolete browser runtime. | Keep the legacy environment isolated, investigate Edge IE mode, and plan migration to a supported browser/driver. |
Performance, repeatability and operational choices
- Element size: element capture usually produces a smaller artifact and less post-processing than a full-window image, but the actual dimensions follow the driver’s rendering behavior.
- Waiting: short, condition-based waits are faster and more reliable than a large fixed delay on every page.
- Retries: retry only transient navigation or rendering failures, with a limit and a fresh diagnostic log. Repeating a broken selector will not help.
- Environment: keep browser zoom, display scaling, window state and driver versions consistent when comparing captures.
- Security: custom headers, cookies and authenticated pages may expose sensitive data. Store screenshots and credentials according to your organization’s policy.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. For an ordinary URL where you do not need IE-specific rendering, one request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It also supports capturing one element by CSS selector, full-page shots with lazy images loaded, custom JavaScript and CSS, waits, click-before-capture actions, hidden selectors, device presets, viewport and retina settings, cookies and headers, blocking rules, resizing, caching with a chosen TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting and an OpenAPI specification. The parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify a migration.
Most importantly for unattended jobs, ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
ScreenshotNeo does not provide an Internet Explorer runtime. If the site only renders correctly in IE mode, keep the Selenium/Edge compatibility workflow above. For standard URL capture, use the API call below; the full parameter reference is in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

FAQ
Does Edge IE mode guarantee the same result as old Internet Explorer?
No. It is Microsoft’s compatibility route, but rendering, policies, drivers and site behavior still need validation in the target environment.
Can I use the ScreenshotNeo API for a page that requires IE-only behavior?
Not as an IE emulator. ScreenshotNeo captures a URL through its own service; retain Edge IE mode or another compatible browser workflow when the page depends on legacy IE behavior.
Why does the VBA example not include a universal “save image” line?
SeleniumBasic exposes an Image return object, but the available file-writing members can vary by installed build. Confirm that object’s type-library members before choosing a save implementation.
