Build a multi-tenant MCP server so every request is independently authenticated, authorized, and scoped to a verified tenant—not to a tenant name supplied by a model or client. Use a protocol revision your clients support, enforce tenant scope across every tool, resource, prompt, and downstream access, and deliberately store any application state that must outlive a request. A stateless protocol can simplify horizontal routing; it does not provide tenant isolation or eliminate application state.

Where does tenant identity come from?

Start at the trust boundary. Validate the incoming credential, identify the principal, and determine which tenant or tenants that principal may access. Derive the tenant scope from verified claims or a trusted identity-to-tenant lookup, then pass it to the code that performs the operation.

Do not treat a tenant ID in a tool argument, URL parameter, client metadata, or earlier request as proof of authority. An LLM-generated argument may be useful as a requested destination, but it cannot grant access. If a user can act for multiple tenants, verify that the principal is entitled to the requested tenant before creating a scoped execution context.

  1. Authenticate: validate the credential on the request and resolve the principal.
  2. Authorize tenant scope: establish which tenant the principal may act for, using trusted identity data and current authorization rules.
  3. Construct trusted context: pass the verified principal, tenant, and relevant permissions to tool, resource, and downstream service code.
  4. Enforce on every access: apply that scope to reads, writes, queries, background work, and result retrieval.
  5. Test the boundary: attempt cross-tenant reads and writes through each MCP capability and downstream path.

Authentication and role checks answer who may use the system or perform an action. Tenant isolation answers whether that action can reach another tenant’s resources. AWS SaaS Architecture Fundamentals makes the distinction directly: “the fact that a tenant user is authenticated does not mean that your system has achieved isolation.” A tenant column or database partition may help organize records, but it does not establish that every access is correctly scoped.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Apply one consistent enforcement path to tools and resources, and ensure prompts or other capabilities cannot expose data through a route that bypasses the same checks. Treat client-reported names and request metadata as input, not as security identity. The MCP base protocol’s per-request model also means you should not infer tenant identity, protocol version, capabilities, or conversation identity from earlier traffic on a connection.

Which tenant-isolation model fits the platform?

Choose among pooled, dedicated, or hybrid resources based on the required boundary, workload, and customer obligations. A dedicated stack can provide a coarser infrastructure or network boundary, while a pooled design can use resources more efficiently but depends heavily on correct fine-grained enforcement. Neither approach is universally best; evaluate the actual blast radius, operations, and compliance needs.

Model Boundary and trade-off Questions to resolve
Pooled resources Tenants share infrastructure. Utilization can be higher, but each application and data access needs reliable tenant-scoped enforcement. How will you prevent cross-tenant queries? How will you contain noisy neighbors and test access paths?
Dedicated resources or stacks Separate resources can provide a coarser isolation boundary and reduce some shared-resource risks, with higher operational cost and complexity. Can you provision, patch, monitor, and recover each tenant’s resources? Do customers need tenant-specific controls?
Hybrid Combines pooled and dedicated boundaries where requirements differ; adds placement, migration, and operational complexity. Which tenants or workloads need a different boundary, and how will authorization remain consistent across both paths?

Compare options against the consequences of an authorization failure, capacity isolation, tenant-specific encryption or residency needs, retention and compliance obligations, and the work required to migrate tenants between models. A partition, tenant key, or separate database is a design element—not a substitute for authorization checks at the application and data layers.

How should requests work across replicas?

Separate protocol state from SaaS application state. The MCP 2026-07-28 Basic Protocol specification says servers process requests independently and that state spanning requests must be referenced by an explicit identifier supplied with each request. Its rule is explicit: “State that needs to span multiple requests (e.g., long-running tasks, application-level handles) MUST be referenced by an explicit identifier the client passes on each request.” This makes requests easier to route independently, but does not mean the application has no durable state.

Keep ordinary request context local to the request. For work that must survive it—such as a durable job, entitlement, or application handle—store the necessary state deliberately, define its lifecycle, and associate it with the verified tenant and principal. On every poll, resume, cancellation, or result-fetch request, validate current authorization and tenant scope again. Possession of an opaque handle alone is not authorization.

For each feature, decide whether its state is request-local, shared across workers, or intentionally tied to a replica. Worker-local objects and notifications may not automatically reach other replicas. Use shared storage, an application-managed notification approach, or routing affinity only where the feature requires it; do not rely on accidental process affinity to carry identity or serve as a security boundary.

Which MCP revision and SDK should you pin?

Pin the protocol revision and SDK combination your clients actually support, and test that combination before upgrading. The 2026-07-28 protocol revision changes the Streamable HTTP deployment model: the current transport material describes a single POST endpoint and does not include the protocol-level session behavior used by earlier revisions. Revisions through 2025-11-25 used session IDs and standalone SSE streams. Do not assume an older client can use the newer model unchanged.

Implementation target What the cited documentation establishes Design implication
MCP 2026-07-28 The current base protocol describes independent request processing and explicit identifiers for state spanning requests. The current Streamable HTTP material describes a single POST endpoint and no protocol-level sessions. Test request metadata, initialization, ordinary calls, cancellation, long-running work, and any extensions you use against this revision.
Earlier Streamable HTTP revisions through 2025-11-25 These revisions used session IDs, standalone SSE streams, and resumability behavior not included in the current transport material. Support them only as an intentional compatibility target; do not mix assumptions from different revisions.
Official TypeScript SDK v1 documentation The checked v1 documentation describes support for 2025-11-25 and identifies 2026-07-28 support as being in v2; v1 is a maintenance line. Pin a compatible SDK line and client set. Check the versioned documentation when selecting or changing SDK versions.

The MCP maintainers’ release post dated May 21, 2026 described the 2026-07-28 release candidate and the planned final release date; use the relevant specification pages for implementation requirements. Version negotiation and fallback behavior should be explicit in your compatibility plan, not inferred from a connection’s earlier messages.

What must be configured at the HTTP edge?

For a remote deployment, terminate TLS at the public edge and configure the application’s Host and Origin policy for the actual deployment hostname. The Streamable HTTP guidance requires Origin validation. The Python SDK deployment guide warns that its localhost-oriented default accepts localhost values and rejects other hostnames until deployment security is configured. A server that works on a developer machine may therefore reject requests behind a public hostname until its allowlist is deliberately set.

  • Validate Origin according to the selected transport guidance.
  • Configure expected Host and Origin values for the deployed hostname rather than leaving a local-development default in place.
  • Trust forwarding headers only when a known proxy sets or validates them.
  • If routing depends on protocol metadata mirrored in HTTP headers, verify it against the request body as required by the supported revision.
  • Test initialization, tool discovery and calls, cancellation, and long-running requests through the real proxy and load balancer.

Ordinary round-robin routing may work well for independent requests, but it does not coordinate durable jobs, worker-sensitive state, or change notifications by itself. Make those requirements explicit for each feature and test them with requests reaching different replicas.

How should background work and tracing be scoped?

When an MCP tool starts asynchronous work, create an explicit task or application handle and persist its tenant and principal association with the work. Every operation on that handle—including polling, resuming, cancellation, and fetching results—must re-check authorization. Follow the lifecycle supported by the protocol revision and SDK you selected, since task behavior can depend on version or extension.

The 2026-07-28 base protocol lists traceparent, tracestate, and baggage as trace-context keys for correlating requests through gateways and downstream services. Use them to support observability without turning traces into a store for secrets or sensitive tenant data. Set access controls, retention rules, and redaction for logs and traces, and avoid putting credentials or sensitive identifiers in baggage.

How can tenant isolation be tested rather than assumed?

Test the actual authorization boundary, not only whether users can log in or records carry tenant keys. Include deliberate attempts to substitute another tenant’s identifier, reuse a handle across principals, and access data through every capability and downstream service. Repeat relevant tests for both synchronous calls and asynchronous work, and across pooled or dedicated paths where the platform supports more than one model.

A 2026 preprint by Mirza Samad Ahmed Baig reports 373 trials across eight model configurations and two transports. In those tested configurations, a correctly validated tenant parameter served 26 of 26 out-of-scope attempts and 26 of 41 plausible-pretext trials overall. When the parameter was removed, the tool signature could not express the read, but 12 of 56 trials escaped the interface by forging writable scope. These are results from a preprint’s specific experiments, not a general isolation guarantee; the forged-scope cases underscore why the server must control trusted scope and enforce it downstream.

The same preprint reports a 57× latency ratio for a particular function-wrapped membership-predicate setup on a production dataset containing multiple gigabytes, and says a JSON_TABLE lateral join recovered index access where the tenant key was indexed. Those findings describe the tested query setup, not a universal performance forecast. Benchmark your own schema and query plans before choosing an enforcement pattern.
